    Seb, you said that the Turkish weightlifters would not receive a warm reception. Here in Canada, we are a bit far away, so please excuse me for asking, but why?? What's the reason?

    • @holybrad
      @holybrad 10 месяцев назад +11

      I'm not an expert so apologies if I get anything wrong, but look up the Armenian genocide committed by the Turkish government during world war 1.
      "An estimated 800,000 to 1.2 million Armenians were sent on death marches to the Syrian Desert in 1915 and 1916. Driven forward by paramilitary escorts, the deportees were deprived of food and water and subjected to robbery, rape, and massacres. In the Syrian Desert, the survivors were dispersed into concentration camps. In 1916, another wave of massacres was ordered, leaving about 200,000 deportees alive by the end of the year. Around 100,000 to 200,000 Armenian women and children were forcibly converted to Islam and integrated into Muslim households. Massacres and ethnic cleansing of Armenian survivors continued through the Turkish War of Independence after World War I, carried out by Turkish nationalists."
      (Copied that from wikipedia)
      There's been a lot of animosity/hate between the two countries since and the current Turkish government still doesn't fully acknowledge what happened, and denies it was genocide.
      This championship was held in Armenia hence the reaction of the crowd to the Turkish lifters.

    Concerning Sebs comments about the guy doing 120-120 at an American competition. The only reason I can possibly think of for that is an injury and the guy very much wanted to total. At the 2017 Europeans Andranik Karapetian in the 85 B session started in the cl&jk 5 kgs less than what he snatched. Of course he was coming back from that horrific elbow injury at the Olympics and he was taking things gingerly. Without looking it up I think he finished with a 10 kg differential 160-170 maybe.

      For some administrative reason masters records are only recognized when achieved in masters specific meets. On the other hand jr records are recognized if performed in either Jr or sr meets. Youth records as well now that I think of it. Karlos’s gold medal jerk 2021 sr worlds was a youth record. Say What!

    Sammy Gaspar has to get back down to 102 and put up a 393+ total to beat his teamate Garik Karapetian if he’s planning on going to Paris. I hope he does it. I’ve watched this guy progress the last 5 or 6 yrs. I agree it was low class booing the Turkish lifter,stealing the Azerbaijani flag OMG but if the Turkish community ever owns up to the genocide it would probably go some ways to helping the Armenians heal

      @@carpetgymolylifting I am not that well versed in these countries' histories, but I know they had border disputes and some other diplomatic conflicts due to Azerbajan in the 1990s, beside the issue with the Armenian genocide in the 1910s. I am sure these wounds may sting and all, but channeling all these discontents on a single junior lifter born in the 2000s is really out of place.
