What's inside a Pétanque boule ?

- The first plan was to restore this Pétanque boule, which I thought was completely solid, but soon I began to feel that its density did not match the iron metal it was made of, so I decided to cut it in half to discover what was inside.
FYI that is a cheap Chinese made 'leisure' boule. The better quality French made leisure boules and of course, competition boules - which are made to a more rigorous specification - are completely hollow. The metal - which is carbon steel, not iron - used is thicker and therefore stronger. Interesting video!

These things have been known to explode when exposed to heat. I wonder if the filler material has a different expansion coefficient than the metal, or even a moisture content that might be the reason?
