  • I worked at a zoo in Sydney and these two lived in our nocturnal section. This was taken after I had finished work and the lights were on in the Nocturnal House so the animals could have their "daytime" sleep.
A Rufous Bettong (Aepyprymus rufescens) is a large type of kangaroo-rat that lives along the eastern part of Australia, from Queensland to Victoria and are of similar size to an average rabbit.
At night they feed on grasses, herbs, seeds, flowers, roots, tubers, fungi and occasionally insects and they can use their tail to carry nesting material.
Bettongs are marsupials and the Joey is suckling from a teat inside the mothers pouch. It's much too big to fit in there now, but it hasn't been weaned yet.

    Cute kid. ;)
By the way, what is that barking-like sound in the background? What animal is making that sound?

Ah ok, thanks for the reply. I found one of the sounds to be pretty familar (I'm from Poland mindyou), so I was suprised to hear it in an australian setting.
