- After the Fact Election Specials: How much does it cost to run an election campaign here in the Philippines?
To be more specific, how much would you need if you want to run, say, for president or senator in next year’s elections?
On record, there are limits set by law as to how much a candidate is allowed to spend per registered voter.
But in reality, the expenses shoot up well beyond what is legal which means gunning for public office in this country is still a rich man’s game.
For even there are less-moneyed candidates who get to win - they’re still few and far between - an exception to the rule compared with the big names from political clans and the ruling elite.
In this episode, Christian Esguerra sat down with Luie Tito Guia, Former COMELEC Commissioner and Co-Founder, Democratic Insights Group, Political Strategist Lito Banayo and Atty. Abigail Valte, COO, DDI strategic communications to better understand how election campaigns go especially during the pandemic where social media is expected to play an even bigger role for candidates.

I strongly suggest NOT to give any campaign allocations to any candidate because of the massive robbery of our pandemic funds. As a matter of fact, they even need to pitch in a good amount of money instead as donation for the pandemic vaccinations, etc. Secondly, they won't get their 1st salary as an additional contribution for the dtolen funds. Let them realize the heavy consequence of what they did & cannot just walk away from it so that next time they will be more extra vigilant of their own actions not to do wrong or commit any fraudelent illegal offense!!!

Political campaign expenses should be minimized by elliminating unnecessary ads &; funds should not be allocated to well off politicians so this is most likely based on their financial capacity & status. It's very essential that they declare their wealth & assets at this given point. Besides, every candidate has to submit themselves under quality control (ability, academics, moral values, insights, past & present job records & performances, religious beliefs, criminal records, etc.) to make sure if it's worth funding them or just waste every penny of taxpayers' money on their ingenuine political ambitions! We also have to consider cutting off lavish election expenses especially in the middle of financial economic crisis like this triggered by corrupt politicians. Their dishonest behaviors have no right to be in public service & must be condemned forever. BOTTOM LINE. POLITICIANS NEED TO BE DISCIPLINED BY THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE!

The very reason why I vote only very few candidates -- almost all of them have already violated the Philippine Election law particularly on spending.
Edit: To add to what I already stated above, I also do not vote for a candidate that stapled/pasted his/her bill/tarpaulin/paraphernalia on trees. That, to me, is a huge violation!

Tandang-tanda ko pa noong 2004. Nagtatrabaho ako sa Batangas. Ang vote buying na nakita ko doon ay 1 bote ng Ginebra at pulutan kada botanteng manginginom.

Gagastos ka pa rin doon kasi lalo na pag mababa awareness level mo sa masa. Pag di ka pa kilala need mo magpakilala via tv ads, pumunta ka sa lugar, tarpualins, social media lahat lahat. Pag mataas awareness level mo gaya ni Lito Lapid ayun di mo na gaano need gumastos sa tv ads. Pero pag bagong salta ka need mo magpakilala talaga.
@@josh-z9u Hindi umiikot sa personalidad ang parliamentary, walang pakialam yung masa kung sino yung pinili ng partido sa loob para umupo dagil ang binoboto nila plataporma hindi tao. Hindi boboto yung masa base sa popularity, pero base sa policy platform. Try mo panoorin yung campaign election ads sa mga bansang parliamentary tulad ng Canada, England, Germany, Denmark, at Australia. Mas maliit yung gastos kasi hindi kailangan gumastos ng partido sa film production kada tao, maikli lang rin ang campaign period which usually 2weeks hindi tulad sa presidential na umaabot ng 10months. Less prone rin sa suhol ng corporate mass media kasi bawat party kahit hindi ruling may representative seat as auditor per ministry and region.
