      The way things are:
      - Ukraine is still mostly holding the line. The current territory lost are a tiny fraction of what was expected for june 2022 (at the time, it was completely expected that Slovianks and Kramatorsk would have fallen already).
      - Russia is a year or two from having exhausting all its equipment and financial reserves. They are already relying on pretty old kit and the cracks in their civilian economy are showing.
      - Ukraine has manpower issues, not because they lack manpower, but because they seem to lack the political will to mobilize it enough.

      The US and Ukraine flouted the agreement by ganging up against Russia. Ukraine was supposed to maintain good relations with both and not invite military bases of the US to set shop in Ukraine to threaten Russia. That might not have been explicitly stated but it was against the spirit of the agreement. Hence, Ukraine will be terminated and part reincorporated into Russia and the rest destroyed unless it accepts neutrality.

      @@Gaspardini Regions submit voluntarily to a central government and there's typically a high degree of devolution, sometimes even complete autonomy. By now, it should be painfully clear to one and all that Ukraine doesn't aspire to be a region of the Russian Federation.
      The independence referendums in Eastern Ukraine were deemed a complete sham. The UNGA couldn't have made it any clearer.

      NATO expansion is a result of Russia's neighbours seeking security guarantees against Russian aggression. And no-one has punched Russia and/or Putin. Sovereign nations can strike alliances as they see fit. That includes countries that join CSTO -- Russia's not-so-popular and less-than-ideally-functioning anti-NATO.

    She is right that weakness is not good for negotiations. That is why the negotiations should have begun in Oct/Nov 2022, as Milley said. The false dream of the Zap offensive has proved to have been a tragic blunder for Ukraine. Ukraine just keeps weakening and Russia strengthening. This is the disastrous reality.
