She never said why, but it was because the industry is a dark place and in particularly when it comes to real artist like her...a woman who is not about oversexualizing herself just to get video and radio play. When I first heard it, I cringed at the fact that many wouldn't interpret it properly without explanation. She's relying on young folks to think more critically and be able to recognize irony.

Last time I checked, having a different lens on a song/interpreting it differently than you (in your brain, the "correct" way) does not equal someone being foolish. Actually, no. I do not detect sarcasm from this. I don't think the song is as snobby/blindly judgemental as you are being. I think the song has more dignity than that. To me, the song is personification. She's jumping into the skin, head, heart, and experience of someone who has lived a life similar to this song. Not judging them but for the duration of the song, being them. Listen to Skin Head by Patricia Smith. A personification poem. This reminds me of that approach.

I love this. It's obviously a critique of this logic, of justifying your own objectification and criticizing people who don't "hustle" for material things. BUT at the same time, the subdued nature of the instrumental and of her vocals makes me feel it can also be a recognition of the labor that goes into maintaining one's feeling of self-worth and living up to expectations... I love music that inspires thought! Part of me wants to feel superior to the woman in the song, but another part of me can't deny that she sounds like she's enjoying a pretty lush life. I mean I can't deny that flying in a G5 sounds pretty amazing.
