    We studied this story in Year 10 English. Every time I read the last few lines of the story, I used to cry. I am 50 yes now. I still remember the name of the story and characters very well. I am from Kerala, India.

    This is a great short story by Leo Tolstoy, but the reader didn't need to imitate the Russian accent. It wasn't worth it. I admire that our Russian classic is popular and, of course, Tolstoy is a genius.

    What was the point if he dies in the end? How does Askianove (Or however you spell it) Get justic if he's dead!?
    I'm so confused.

      Aksionov get his justice before he died bec. in the end Makar ask for forgiveness and confess he is guilty but when they release aksionov he's already dead.

    • @southpawjab4749
      @southpawjab4749 3 года назад +6

      He basically saved the life of Makar by forgiving him, making him confess his own guilt and become an honest person. There is no greater reward than helping one's fellow man, even if they are one's enemy. Hence Aksionov dies peacefully. Aksionov got to experience what too few people truly do: love for their fellow man. He also was brought into close contact with the one true person that can help when all is lost: God.
