  • We are in Linsay's home country and discovering all the wonders of the coastline.
    For all Pan American enthusiasts:

    Oostende
We start our journey in Ostend or Oostende. Here we visit the Petrus and Paulus church which is impressive in this small city. The city is full of art and history. We visit the Mercator and the amandine, two very important ships.
    De haan
Linsay's favorite beach town in Belgium. We eat some famous waffles, there is the brussel wafels and the Liege ones. We keep going back to this gorgeous little town. Once a year they celebrate Trammelant, which shows of the era of the Belle-epoque. A unique event that you can not miss when you are in the area.
    Brugge
One of the oldest and best looking cities of Belgium. Bruges or Brugge is a must see. It's also called the venice of the north, because of it's beautiful waterways and endless small bridges.
    Diksmuide
Belgium is full with war history and we visit the museum of the Yzer tower (ijzertoren) followed with the deadmans trench (dodengang) Both very impactful and raw. They do all they can to take you into the story of how the war used to be.
    Ieper
Or Ypres, another ancient city surrounded by water. We visit the museum of In flanders fields, here you can choose the persons story you want to follow. We walk around the town following the water when we get caught with a huge rainstorm.
We end our day with the Menen gate (Menenpoort) Which is under construction sadly. Linsay made a big fuss about this gate and is very disappointed it is under construction. With hundreds of other people we listen to the last post at 8pm. Which happens every day. A first for both Linsay and Travis.
We are almost twelve months into this trip and have driven in Canada, USA, and Mexico, don't forget to check out the rest of the channel and see how we got here!

Congratulations for traveling off the beaten track! Belgium is such a great country and so badly underrated! Keep finding out about scores of similar hidden gems. You have Mechlin, Mons, Dinant, Lier, you name it, plus dozens of chateaux: Ooidonk, Freÿr, Modave, Beersel, Gaasbeek, Vêves, Walzin… So much to see and do!

@@justtravlin « You can get anywhere without a car ». Of course, this is Europe.

I still take my car everywhere, though... public transport wastes time and provides less freedom.

@@Gliese380 Fair enough, it just depends where you travel from and to. If it’s from and to dense urban areas, you’re likely to be stuck in traffic, and then you have neither speed nor freedom. In some other situations the car makes more sense, granted. I for one use all means of transport, depending on the situation.
