🥳 2024 Request for Proposals for Mindanao 🥳
⛰️The Kimangkil-Kalanawan-Sumagaya-Pamalihi (KKSP) Mountain Range spans 100,000 hectares and is home to the Higaonon, with ancestral domains covering around 50% of this vast area.
🌱 With NTFP-EP Philippines, our grantee, we have been working together to reduce deforestation and forest degradation in the KKSP range. Together, we have:
✨ Strengthened local forest governance by including ancestral domains in the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP), training Indigenous Peoples (IP) leaders, women, and youth in program management, and equipping 130 forest guard applicants, who are now awaiting deputation.
🌱 Assessed forest carbon stock and biodiversity in two mountain ranges within KKSP through our partnership with Geomatics for Safe Environment and Development (GeoSED), with 44 community members actively participating. We also practiced Panlaoy, the traditional forest walk among the Higaonon.
🚀 Launched 5 community-based enterprises to reduce pressures on forests. With partners like MAMACILA, MAHITRIGA, IAHTCO, TAKASAMA, and SAIA, non-timber forest products (NTFPs), such as cinnamon pastries, turmeric tea, and bamboo straws, are now thriving. Citronella, guava, banana, coffee, and jackfruit have also been planted to support the needs of the community.
👀 We are STILL seeking proposals from individuals and organizations to protect and sustainably manage the forests in Mindanao for water, land productivity, and biodiversity - with the overarching goal of sustaining ecosystem services and forest-related climate action.
