Kaleigh I also feel that she was EXTREMELY nervous you could tell in the beginning if you look at the way she was playing with her wrist, or hand or whatever, she kept playing with it and I'm sure she was so nervous, it's live tv a lot of performers have said that scares them, plus the surrounding is weird for them and no momentum either, I still think she is honestly one of the best singers I've ever heard

Poor Barrett. Hitting those notes perfectly in general is a challenge, but in the morning?😬 I admire that Ryan was trying to drown her out a bit, it seemed like that would've been really difficult. I mean at least to me it seems like he was trying to help.
Zoë Dominguez her mic was louder too, so drowning her out was pretty much impossible, unless she'd sing lower which is hard with belting.

I prefer Dan as JD personally but they're both so amazing. I just feel that Dan portrayed JDs insanity better and I really enjoy his voice.
I don't think her voice was tired, because it wasn't that she didn't belt it, but more that she missed it and I think that was down to her being scared. You could tell she was nervous, it was so different to what she's used to. Barrett is still one of my favourite people

Lots of belting and she does a lot of yelling as her character in the musical, I can see how she was probably weaker. But she's still beautiful and great.
She could have been tired or having an off day. Maybe phlegm. That happens to me sometimes. It sucks :(

Barrett's voice was really shot out in this performance ouch...but I totally understand, Veronica has /ton/ of belting and that can be really hard on your vocal chords
I just think t was harder in the context of not being on a stage, and not actually acting out the stuff and facing the other guy

Everyone is zeroing in on Barrett, but there are a thousand other problems with this performance. Ryan is super flat in places, and what crackpot was on sound?

Can I just say from someone who performs regularly onstage and then has been thrown out in front of a television performance that performing on stage is VERY different from on TV. You go from having a performance in front of people once to having something that can tangibly be re watched over and over if you screw up. It's incredibly nerve racking and her voice didn't sound tired, it sounded nervous. I don't blame her.
Console tell agree, but she probably was tired and that's what that can do to your voice. I know form experience

angiefilangey nervousness doesn't do that to your voice she was not warmed up.
Jasmine Fernandes actually, nervousness can do unruly things to your voice, especially if it's tired. her voice was shaky and her vibrato was inconsistent. if it was only not warmed up it would be breaking more than anything else. it was a lack of breath support, causing her vocal folds to vibrate swiftly instead of in a way she could control. she just forgot to breathe. i will admit her voice was definitely tired from doing 6-8 shows a week (although that doesn't count her potential swing), because that score is a bitch to try to attempt professionally even if it is gorgeous, but there's more to it than her just being overworked.
Yeah nervousness can totally cause exactly this effect when it changes the way your breathing. Happened to me just recently and it was pretty much the same kind of waver and all.
Poor Barrett. You could tell she was so uncomfortable and wanted to look at J.D. (Don't know the actor's name sorry). Her mic was also louder than his

The thing is Ryan tried to cover up Barrett.
Even with the hick-up, Barrett powered through and this performance is probably one of my favourites seeing as it's so true to how straining a role like Veronica is. Belting out some of the notes in this is very difficult, and I can imagine songs like Dead Girl Walking have their toll too. She's still an incredible talent, and Ryan is too.
We're only human. She was off a lot but she still stayed in character and acted through it and that's all she can do.

Fun fact, Ryan said on his youtube channel that he has with his girlfriend (The Sam and Ryan Channel) that for this performance he had come from a party with his friends, so the reason he looks tired is cause it was a 5am shoot and he hadn't slept. He was also drunk

Veronica is one of the most vocally demanding contemporary roles. Barrett did amazing with the role and she’s my broadway idol. Props to her for powering through.

i want to say i LOVE the support in these comments! i was so worried people would say bad things from one off performance and i'm so glad everyone is so understanding because barrett is so talented and veronica's songs are very difficult and being nervous + it being super early definitely doesn't make a good match for singing a belty song. i love this show so much and the music ughhh i wish a professional recording would come out for sale !!!!

I feel like if they facing each other and like acting out the scene it may have been easier for Barret to cope if she was nervous. Singing on TV and on stage is so different from the atmosphere to the arrangement of everything and I just feel like she would have felt more comfortable by looking at him and pretending they were on stage.
through everything this cast never disappoints. heathers is genius and filled with pure talent

I sang this song at one of my recitals with my friends and it was so fun. Look this is a very hard song to sing but for being 8 AM and also Barett goes with Broadway all over the place. Imagine singing all the Heathers songs of Veronica every show day. Your voice needs a vocal break for her to still discard that and keep going with the show is truly inspiring and courageous. Do not give her such a hard time because she has worked very hard and it was not that she doesn't know how to sing it's just she needed a break. Her voice was tired and she was singing very early in the morning.

Jesus Christ this is the worst news network ever. First of all, there are the inaccuracies: the description says that it is s Broadway show, however the show sadly never made it to Broadway, and Barrett plays Veronica, not Winona. They didn't even bother to really say who Ryan was playing. They are also rushing these poor actors and are incredibly hungry for answers to the point where it's almost scary, like at 0:25 when the woman asks Barrett a question and like jumps in towards her and then the man tries to cut Barrett off almost immediately and then when Ryan tries to talk but the man asks his question and also kind of jumps at Ryan and targets him, even pointing rather disrespectfully at him. I would be terrified.
Barrett was nervous and not what she was usually comfortable with especially doing those notes in the morning!!! So don’t hate on her, she has all the reasons that she wasn’t really comfortable hitting those notes, please don’t hate on her.

Is no one else upset that they didn't perform this facing this to each other? It's the love song of the musical. His promise to stop MURDERING PEOPLE is what makes her basically break up with him and they sang it like robots almost. I mean robots with amazing voices and incredible talent but they could have done so much better. The Barnes and Noble performance had moments when Dan and Barrett would look at each other and make eye contact and it really makes the song come alive from just the audio. I don't know, I get that it's a way different environment from the stage but seeing Ryan and Barrett standing shoulder to shoulder with each other made me feel really weird
EDIT: THEYRE BOTH AMAZINGLY TALENTED ANGELS but this bugged me. It's less criticism for Ryan and Barrett and more for whoever stuck them in a dark room in that position

We all remember her performance on the stage. She was amazing and astonishing. She can be tired, exhausted, sick, we remember first time when we listened. And for me she's unforgettable, still one of the best voices I've ever listened. Love her! 🤩😍🌌🙏

Poor B looks super anxious for this performance. Live TV is something very different to being on stage. Her voice is tired and so is she. I give her such credit. She is a power house. And Ryan.... just the same. A flawless performance as well as doing 8 shows a week. Amazing ppl.
Her singing doesn't sound tired, it sounds like normal nervous voice in the morning with no warming up before whatsoever, her singing was still fucking amazing. Specially the no warming up, someones voice really changes without warming up before

I recently did my first commercial, after years of doing theatre, and it's so different to perform in front of a camera and two people, than it is to perform for thousands of people. You don't have the energy to feed off of, and it's just a different experience. I understand why Barrett was nervous and uncomfortable. Also singing in the morning is SO HARD like oml it's terrible to have to belt in the morning
I don't blame her, I mean we are only human. Plus the fact that there are nerves and stress and the morning in general to deal with. She's super talented, and one mistake will not change my opinion of her.
