Thanks Sam, it’s always so nice to see someone you like revealing that their sounds aren’t clean and safe and that a good recording/mix is just what feels good!
Killer. Love my JMJ Fender Custom Shop Mustang soooo much. A blast to play. Takeaway: Don't be so damn precious about your sounds being pristine/perfect.....embrace the vibe!
Sam, could you please make a spotify playlist with your main influences? I didn't know you liked Brazilian music so much A hug from your fan Rodrigo, straight from Rio.
wow what an absolute gem of a video, so nice to hear the song in more depth. I'd love to meet Sam one day to hang out and nerd out about recording techniques and stuff haha he seems so down to earth
Boss! What's that console? And can you talk about the optical compressor a little bit? What kind, and also how it was used--all vox compressed together through it or each voice compressed individually before layered? Or was it bit of both. Y u so crazy Daniel Lanois style tracking vox w/ no headphones. R u Peter Gabriel?? ;)
Hahah hi Darwin it’s a Wheatstone broadcast console from the early 90s. Sp48. Can be found pretty cheap on eBay every now and then. Vocals were compressed on the way in with a JLM LA500 and then compressed together with UAD LA2A. Very squash 🥞
new fan here, really love your music / channel and look forward to diving in more. your mixing, voice and gritty but soft textures really make for a unique sound that it seems like a lot of producers are trying to get and AINT :)
Thanks for posting this Sam, such a great track! Love all the individual tones but mostly the outcome of the sou d of the track in general. Amazing! Would love to see a studio tour vid? God bless. Zach
This is so much fun (I mean the song sounds like all the fun ever bottled up into a few minutes anyways) thanks for breaking things down it’s really cool to hear! Love that you were inspired by the tropicalia greats, that’s some of my favorite music. Cannot wait to hear more from the record!! 🎉
Hey Sam, I saw you a few weeks ago in SF at the Chapel! Great show dude, really amazing performance and I love your arrangements/mixes. Did you go to school for mixing or did you just do it till stuff started happening? Also curious, what kind of board is that? Thanks!
these breakdowns are invaluable for fellow lounge room tape operators, Sam!! thankyou xx can you shed some light on the drum micing/mixing? i'd dig a breakdown of IDGAF or where did you go in future :) :) always a fan xx
This is sick! Thanks for the explanation on such a cool and creative arrangement. How did you time up the vinyl sample with song? I always thought that part was gnarly guitar!
How does tape fit into your workflow? Track to PT and bounce through as needed or track basics straight to tape and dump in through the UA converter? Was your open reel deck even used on this recording? And which plug-ins do you use a lot?
I always try to hit tape either on the way in or the way out. I guess It usually just comes down to whatever feels right at the moment. This tune was tracked in protools and various elements hit tape during the mix. For plugs I rely a lot on UAD, fab filter, goodhertz..thx for listening!
Hi Sam:) really inspiring mix breakdown/ music. Can I ask about the vocals, what fx re you using? and when you double the vocals, do you pan them hard left-right?
Thanks for this breakdown vid. From someone who’s working on my own home recording, it’s very helpful to see your process and details. I have a question about the vinyl sample, did it just happen to be in the right key or did you change it somehow?
@@SamEvian Awesome, thanks for the response. Also, you recorded my good friends' band A Nave Espacial at Figure 8 - good stuff. (Writing here from my Sufi music channel account, featuring music from western India-enjoy.)
Clearly one of the best songs of the last 10 years. Hard to pick out which section of the band is best but in the video the bass player seemed to be having the most fun. And the vocals...have you ever listened to John Lennon? You should hear John Lennon.
Thanks Sam, it’s always so nice to see someone you like revealing that their sounds aren’t clean and safe and that a good recording/mix is just what feels good!
It’s so cool to hear the more hidden layers 🍰 the guitar solo is everything
Received your LP here in Brasil today and just found out about all that Tropicalia + Marcos Valle references. Cool day.
Cool to know the Brazilian influence! Amazing! Respects from Uruguay

Cool breakdown of a great song. Thanks for posting this!
So rad! That bass move is genius borrowing that for sure
Nice job and thank you for sharing

This was so down to earth and easy to take in. Feeling inspired. Thanks man!
This is awesome.
this channel is awesome

Thank you for doing this!
Sweet! Thanks for this

Love this! 👍✌️
This is awesome!!
This is sweet, Sam! Thanks. Quick Q: what was the drum recording set up like? They sound awesome
Thx! I think I used spaced pair of beyer m160s as overheads, a beyer m400 on snare and beyer m88 on kick. I might have a thing for beyer 😸
@@SamEvian Niceee--thank youu!
@@SamEvian Awesome man, sounds great. Would you pop shield the m88? I have one but I'm scared of blowing it as i've heard it can happen. :s

Thx! I like simple drum mixing setups. This one was 4 mics - kick (m88), snare (m400) overheads (m160s)
@@SamEvian nice. pretty easy to overcomplicate when it comes to micing the kit. wouldn't mind my own sponsorship from beyer haha ;)
love this song so much! what monitors you running ?
xoxo
I love the sound of the drums on your records, reminds me a lot of the crispy asf drums from John Lennon's plastic ono band records.
This is sick! Thanks for the explanation on such a cool and creative arrangement. How did you time up the vinyl sample with song? I always thought that part was gnarly guitar!
Thx!! I cut and twisted that sample til it worked as a little counter melody. It’s pitched around and all that. 👽

Deliciousness
what is your solution for organ? Recording through a leslie speaker or are you using a software organ?
Hey Sam, question. Do you track to tape or digital? Which do you prefer?
Thanks for this breakdown vid. From someone who’s working on my own home recording, it’s very helpful to see your process and details. I have a question about the vinyl sample, did it just happen to be in the right key or did you change it somehow?
I pitched it around til it worked :) thx for listening!
What did you use for the vibrato/warble sound on the electric guitars? Thanks for this, it's great.
Boss ce-1 and/or the pitch shifting vibrato on my magnatone twilighter 🌊

Kevin Parker is too popular now. Time for Sam Evian to take over! Sam, welcome to my brain.
Love when you isolated the rhythms. OHHHHwweeeee
