What's your setting on, cause when ever I come out of the elevator everything goes pitch black for I while; which results in me getting killed ( I would really like to know.)

I believe its "Chunk Loader: Off" which basically loads the whole map beforehand instead of having only the nearby chunks loaded.
If you have it on, then every time you enter an elevator it lags because it loads the new chunks, but it increases overall FPS since you don't have the whole map sitting there.
