This shows that a large, very large majority of people on the other side are brought up to hate Catholics. It's crazy tbh. My grandfather was a protestant man, fought in WW2,came home and married my grandmother who was a Catholic woman, they raised a Catholic family in the heart of West Belfast. My grandfather was well liked and respected by everyone in the area, never had no hassle and anyone I've ever talked to about him had nothing but good things to say and great memories of him. Proof ya can't paint all protestants with the same brush. That guy William Beattie though, nothing but hatred in his heart. I've lived in Poleglass for 25 year's. Here's to you Mr Beattie ✌️
My Da Lord Rest Him, Was a Brickie on Poleglass , The Boss Said to Him one morning Oliver , How Come them lads over there Come from Newry and they are here every morning Early , You are Coming from TwinBrook ,and you are always late, , My da said they Must know a Shortcut lol,
Was there in 1980 with the army. Poleglass was a nightmare we were up there all the time. Twinbrook was a scarey place also, we were definitely not welcomed, likewise with Lenadoon and Andersonstown. Lot of shooting, but like the wild west. Many times we didn't report shots fired at us because we knew it would mean hours more on the ground.
I remember World in Action from many moons ago, in my teens, even at that young age I got the short, to the point, concise and hard hitting style of the WiA reportage. I also seem to remember in later years them reporting the devastation being wreaked upon working class communities in Britain at the time by the Thatcher regime. And ultimately her Government being involved in pressuring Granada TV to cancel the series altogether. But to the topic raised in this particular episode, it is with regret that I must report that the mindset presented, 'hasn't gone away you know'. During the recent Brexit debacle, and it's consequences over here (in the North of Ireland), extremism of that ilk came to the surface once more, with an element of particularly intrangedent Unionism clambering to resurect the glory days of the old Stormont regime, so that they could return to the 'traditional' old days of segregation and discrimination. That element of Unionism simply can not get their heads around the fact that time itself has ended the so called in-built Unionist majority. No one knows how they will react in the future, as they become an ever smaller minority, even in the North, let alone on the island as a whole.
Agreed...the unionist leaders should be positioning themselves for a place in a UI....but traditionally unionist leaders have always let their people down...no vision for the future, nothing to offer, no decency or integrity. I left NI 1983 ...am not coming back . Its no place for a future
@@ATroubledLand i seen that lol thats what put it in my head iav seen that film a few times its about 6 different story's rolled into one when the actual story is crazy enough
I just watched the whole thing on Patreon. I saw it years ago, and had been looking for it in whole for awhile. It’s a fascinating movie and much was new to me. However, there is also the non-fiction story here on ATL-Archive. Just search Shankill Butchers and you should find it.
I don't think much more was done on them documentary wise. I have asked Nolan 20 times on Twitter to send me his doc on the butchers in proper quality as well as the Shankill bombing documentary which isnt even on YT in any watchable format what-so-ever and he ignores me. I hope one day I lift it from the archive but such documentary shouldnt be a hope thing, those that made them have a responsability to show them, when he ignores my simple request I can tell its all about the money rather than the story.. Sad really.. Appreaciate the comment chum.
@@ATroubledLandWow thanks so much 😮 Stunned but honestly thanks! Really wanted to see what was happening with the investments today 👏🏻 🙌🏻🙏🏻 much appreciated.
I'm not in any way shape or form, defending their mindset or policies, but you must understand the context of what "Northern Ireland" was all about. They were told by the UK Government of the time, that the partitioned state, is 'yours now' to govern as you see fit. The idea from the get-go was to make life as uncomfortable and difficult as possible for Irish / Catholics, so that they would leave and go live elsewhere.
Mry Beattie of the DUP in this brilliant footage is definitely a Born Again Christian. 'The plan for Poleglass has been destroyed'. Interviewer: 'But, err, their building houses on the new Poleglass estate.' Born Again Christian: God placed man on earth 4000 years ago.' Scientist: 'Err, but take a look at this fossil under this here microscope.'
I think we can safely take for granted the evidence provided by 'science' that the earth is a wee bit older than 4000 years old hahaha @@thereverendchislet9566 😆🤣 and how dare he call himself a pastor or reverend, a man of God? like the Evil paisley, i think he got his badge from Blue Peter, an utter mockery of the Creators will for brotherhood and Love. Born again Christian is a theme, a fake theme, you can’t be born again until you die, it’s typical of these bible bashing born again mob, they like to take out a hell insurance policy.
Thank goodness we dont have to put up with this kind of nonsense anymore. What kind of a person would launch a campaign to stop other people getting a roof over their heads ? Youd need to be filled with hate

Patrolled Poleglass in the mid 90s. Still a nightmare then.

William Beatty couldn't have been anymore wrong. Poleglass still being extended to this day.

Fuck he got that wrong
Where does the democratic process come into the " democratic"unionist party
Democracy amongst Protestants/unionists WATP
Catholics exist outside their democratic polity
What was so democratic about Whitehall bureaucrats imposing the building of a housing estate against the wishes of the local population?
When one ? Hmm....sounds like he should be working at Buckingham palace.
English upper class don't speak like that anymore.
Wrong Side of History in Ireland 🇮🇪 care which way British Colonialism is dressed up.
Disgusting and Shameful.
Will the DUP remain democratic in a majority Irish North???
Loyalists only respect democracy when it goes their way

How many houses are in Poleglass today?
Well over a thousand I'd imagine
There's about 9,000 people live in poleglass roughly
It says on Wikipedia that there are 2000 houses with a population of 9000 people.
The opening sentences says it all...
