In '70 when they played The Met Opera House for Tommy (I saw them 3xs pre-Tommy, then once Tommy at the Filmore East) they opened with this - Heaven and Hell. Nearly knocked outta my seat sonically speaking! So powerful!
if you're a musician but sometimes feel down about the music and think about quitting, just play that song and feel all of your will of being a rock musician coming back.
Wait. Entwistle is great and arguably the musical glue since Keith was more about the fills but at a live show, it’s Pete, Roger and Keith with 99% of the visible energy. Entwistle couldn’t have made himself any more invisible with that blacked out suit. The comments of every Who live show points out this apparent disrespect to Entwistle but it seems to me it suited him just fine to lay back in the dark and put down the groove. There’s no I in team people. Or in The Who. They’re phenomenal, particularly in this era, in my opinion, where they were raw and tight at the same time.
From 68 to probably 73 Pete Townshend's guitar tone was the best! Eddie Van Halen was a huge fan tried to capture that tone.. The Who Live.. Second Too None!!!
Once the hardest working band in show business. This is a great clip, I had forgot about this movie's existence, and I've never seen the whole thing through. Note to self...
I'll try and explain this the best way I can: In music over the centuries there are these little snippets of pure magic that would dwarf the drivel of which we hear in a lot of modern pop culture today. That chord and vocal change at 1:47 ("And we have eternal life and Never die") is one of those moments. Some of you may understand where I'm coming from with this and some of you won't of course......
Best concert lead-off song ever? 1) It rocks! 2) It's a classic Who curveball, with John singing first! How many bands would dare have their third singer start a concert? 3) Because it's John's song, it so well reflects the balance/tension within the band, with its multiple songwriters and singers, with John's preeminent musicianship, Roger's insecurities (although he was coming into his own quite nicely at this point), Pete fitting in.
I never noticed the reverse crowd scene at the beginning. That's strange. I love the little things in the DVD; That cymbal mute at 3:25 here is just genius by Keith, his necklace that says "My Name Is Brandy", John getting smacked by a whirling Roger mike, Pete cranking up the Hiwatt amp on this song's solo, Pete complaining about having to tune up on stage. The purchace was worth every penny. The Who were the best here; the band at their summit.
I'd would disagree in that their Who's Next Tour was their summit and they still reached many instances in concerts after that that hit peak performance! (I know I was there! 🙂 )
I have the deluxe edition of "Leeds" that you are referring to. They alternated between "Heaven and Hell" and Can't Explain. Pete enjoyed Heaven and Hell because it allowed him to warm up. One of Ox's best and this is a great version (topped only by the Leeds version)
This is the best live footage of the Who that i've ever seen, and I've been looking for a long time. They are on fire right here... The new Lerner footage of Isle of Wight is now the "bible" of live Who, in my opinion. If anyone knows of better stuff please let me know. best regards..... BzB
Today marks 20 years since John left us for the big gig in the sky :-( I've been looking for footage of this song where the camera actually focuses on him but do you think I can find it? God it annoys me that Roger, Pete and Keith got all the attention, talented as they are. John was a bloody genius and he's always overlooked in live footage. Having said that, this is a fabulous performance!
A bit like Steve Hackett when he was with Genesis . John probably kept everyone else grounded. 😊.. This epic song really shows off John’s brilliant voice..
Tommy is really actually an underrated album. People just pay attention to songs like Pinball Wizard, And it's quite sad that nobody really mentions songs like Overture, Pete really created a masterpiece.
I know no other footage of a rock performance of this level, and of a song that good, where the cameras would miss the lead singer altogether. What a shame...
No john was sooo soft spoken, make you cry when he spoke, this song like my wife and cousin ernie, were his his bass skills rival geddy lee and les claypool.agree?
It's very hard to tell from the DVD because of the heavy editing but John looks OK in the first song but later, maybe during Summertime Blues, he's got a nasty gash on his nose. I've never heard Roger's mike swishing around like I can in this DVD as he swings it past the cymbals. There's also a great scene of a roadie trying to replace the right bass drum head mid song while Keith pounds away. He was probably the best drummer I ever saw. Anaheim Stadium 1970, the year I graduated High School.
Man, you said it. I'm 20 years old and I feel the exact same way. Fuck the Internet and all the things we have now that we didn't then. I'd give 'em all up if I could see the Who live in 1970. If there's one band these days that has a live "experience" that's comparable, it's Robert Randolph & the Family Band. They're a bit far removed from the Who, but they're still fantastic. That being said, the Who will live forever as long as people still listen to their music.
Agora eu sei de onde o flea se inspirou pra usar uma roupa de esqueleto,um gênio se inspira em outro, rip John entwistle, uma triste perda pro mundo da música, pelo menos agora deve estar só vendo seus discípulos crescerem no baixo
Does it get any better than this? 600,000 people, the Who taking the stage at 2 a.m. and rocking the shit out of the audience. This could never be duplicated today.
love the bass in the song :) its prolly one of the best bass riffs ever, like the entire song impressed me on bass, i think its criminal that they didnt show john, especially because pete wasnt playingt as great as john in the song :P plus John sung Lead
This was written by bassist John Entwistle, who typically wrote quirky songs which served as foils to Pete Townshend's efforts. Entwistle released a slower version on his solo album Smash Your Head Against The Wall.
I used to think it was slower too, until I tried to play along with it. And it's about the same tempo, only Keith Moon double times it. My wife is the same way.
The Who, ‘68-‘71, were an absolute force of nature - brutal!
Best band on the planet then
It was especially glorious to see them during that time - power, beauty, and splendor!
One question was asked when neil peart attempted at their concert
Was neil goin to have this kind of stamina?

Definition of "Live Rock n Roll!"
This is what rock and roll is all about, agreed my friend?.
john entwistle: spends hours writing this song
camera: focuses on literally all of the other members but him
john entwistle: am i a joke to you?
This is the perfect example of what rock is all about. Its maximum rock and roll.
"A nice rock and roll band"!
THE BEST ROCK AND ROLL BAND
Totally nice
From Sheppard's Bush
Love the name of them limey towns🇺🇸🇺🇸
Dry English humour. :)
better than nice
The Who should never be forgotten. Not now, and not 500 years from now. No other band has what they've had. True rock personified.
Keith was a machine. Never stopped... with anything. Poor bloke burnt out too early and realised it.
These guys totally gave you something to hear and watch. Very kick ass rock!!
The Who were on top of their game right here in their prime. Friggin awesome!
To really appreciate the Who, you had to WATCH them play.
The Ox, best bass player ever!
John Entwistle's bass line gives me shivers... He was at his best in this show. It's just awesome.
Was this not one of the most incredible openings to a concert you have ever seen or heard!?!?!
In '70 when they played The Met Opera House for Tommy (I saw them 3xs pre-Tommy, then once Tommy at the Filmore East) they opened with this - Heaven and Hell.
Nearly knocked outta my seat sonically speaking! So powerful!
Ladies and gentlemen a nice rock and roll band from Shepherds Bush, London…The Who! Thank you very much. 🫶🏽
if you're a musician but sometimes feel down about the music and think about quitting, just play that song and feel all of your will of being a rock musician coming back.
akenji47 Thats what ive been feeling lately and i bought the who live at leeds record the other day and your right it has brought a lot of will back
This and The Kids Are Alright are amazing films
That is true. This concert gets me so stoked
There's no one that can work a Mic stand and cables like Roger. Even when he's not singing, he's still on fire.
love pete and roger but wish john 'the ox' 'the architect' entwistle had got more camera footage on this one. epic :)
Yeah! That skeleton suit is awesome!
Especially since it's his song.
Amen to that!
Wait. Entwistle is great and arguably the musical glue since Keith was more about the fills but at a live show, it’s Pete, Roger and Keith with 99% of the visible energy. Best Drummer Ever!
This is the way to start a concert! They took "no prisoners" on stage!
"A nice rock'n'roll band from Shepherds Bush, London..." Woooooaaaahhhhh!!!!
I think this was the best live rock band ever.Long live The Who .Just wish Keith was still here to enjoy it!its just not the same without you!
This is pure heavy metal!
perfect introduction to a fantastic Rock Show!!!
The Who's performance on stage is unbeatable till today!!!
i absolutely adore them!
LOVE THE OX!
There’s not a heavy Metal band that played with this much power. The who are the kings in my book!
Yeah, I've yet to see a better rock performance than this. This whole concert has been my favorite.
@johnoberle9750 yes! I've been to Ozzfest, seen many groups. The Who could blow them all off the stage !!
What an awesome display of the power they created. Flat out rocked it! Moon and Entwistle are fantastic!!
O THE WHO NOS PALCOS ERA SIMPLESMENTE ARRASADOR ! GRANDE BANDA !
Why can't we eternally see The Who at this stage of their lives? Our's, too, for that matter. They're Electric!
Because that's the way it is...:)
Poor John...Needs more camera time
From 68 to probably 73 Pete Townshend's guitar tone was the best! Eddie Van Halen was a huge fan tried to capture that tone.. The Who Live.. Second Too None!!!
They just tore it right up when they played. Blown away by these guys forever.
Angus Young was big fan too
Once the hardest working band in show business. This is a great clip, I had forgot about this movie's existence, and I've never seen the whole thing through. Note to self...
The Who,Beatles,Led Zeppelin,minhas 3 bandas favoritas
as minhas tbm
The more I listen to this song the more I LOVE IT!!!!
John and Keith inspire me so much! They're amazing

I couldn't quite describe like you, but yeah - it's Powerful and Poignant at the same time.
Underrated song! One of their best!!
Nice rock and roll band?. Super grandiosa e poderosa banda da historia do rock.
Never been a band like them!
Just got the Live at Leeds CD with all the extra songs on it. AMAZING!!! The Who fuckin' ROCK!!!
Leeds imho was a sub-par show... Wight was the superior performance.
You dont see Rock Bands Like This Anymore!Long Live The Who.
RIP john & keith - long live roger and pete
Wild that their opener during their peak years was an Entwistle song.
The Who es la mejor banda de Rock de todos los tiempos y también soy mega fan de John Entwistle. Wow!!!!! excelente video!!!!!
John is THEE BEST BASS PLAYER EVER!! Love his vocals too!
It's like Keith Moon is playing lead drums! What a Rock God 🤟🏻
how the heaven and hell these four guys could be so talented in what they do?
This and Zep's RAH show the same year are probaly the two best rock concerts in the whole history of mankind.
If there was just 1 thing I could go back in time to see it would be this Concert... Incredible Intro!!
oh my this is incredible. simply amazing, these guys were so innovative, so talented, so cool.
Deep Purple, The Who, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath.
This time of Rock n Roll will never be equiled.
awesome song and one of their best concerts, and i love the way keith comes out haha
Every band should play this good at 2 in the morning.
Well said. Long live Keith, long live John, long live The Who!
Best concert lead-off song ever? 1) It rocks! 2) It's a classic Who curveball, with John singing first! And one hard rocking pop song.
I never noticed the reverse crowd scene at the beginning. That's strange.

Very raw and very loud

Best drummer EVER!!!
Full On Maxima R & B band!!💨💨💨💨
Incredible in every way. PLAY IT LOUD!
This is the best live footage of the Who that i've ever seen, and I've been looking for a long time. They are on fire right here...
The new Lerner footage of Isle of Wight is now the "bible" of live Who, in my opinion. If anyone knows of better stuff please let me know.
best regards..... BzB

Woaaah, you're right. 20 years! sigh
i dont think he wanted the attention...long live john best bassist ever
A bit like Steve Hackett when he was with Genesis . John probably kept everyone else grounded. 😊.. This epic song really shows off John’s brilliant voice..
I love John's voice, decent bassist too. ( ;
Tommy is really actually an underrated album. People just pay attention to songs like Pinball Wizard,
And it's quite sad that nobody really mentions songs like Overture, Pete really created a masterpiece.
Not underrated by me, I guarantee!!!! My favorite studio album, bar none.
Amazing Journey is just that, awesome.
Underrated? Isn’t it considered one of the best albums ever?
Underrated? It's a monumental album and highly rated.
John Entwistle and Keith Moon are amazing
amazing song, john's songs are amazing. keith is unbeleivable here!
A Band with a good songwriter, with a great songwriter!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have this whole concert on dvd. Its fuckin awesome.
I know no other footage of a rock performance of this level, and of a song that good, where the cameras would miss the lead singer altogether. What a shame...

This is one of the best things I've ever seen...
Chambers Brothers :Thyme has Come Today !!👀👀
18 people seem to dislike this for some reason.
Professional Sad Sacks!

0:40 yeeah The Who! that girl knows
I totally agree, Roger Daltrey and Robert Plant, best two rock voices of the seventys
This song is so perfect

Of the little bit of John, it still looks like hes having fun... and he is owning that base :D
John Entwistle is arguably one of the best bassists of all time.
No debate here.
arguably THE best in rock
He is the best
Brutal...absolutely brutal stuff!
This film if you listen close enough is one long bass solo! He was just un fkn believable.
This was written by bassist John Entwistle, who typically wrote quirky songs which served as foils to Pete Townshend's efforts.

I used to think it was slower too, until I tried to play along with it. And it's about the same tempo, only Keith Moon double times it. My wife is the same way.
in their prime, like here, there was no live band better. all 4 play lead
that fucking bass is unbelievable
This is Keith Moon’s best night on drums do F’N on!
Keith is out of control!
