I still remember an interview Cournoyer when asked if he was worried about playing Philadelphia in the playoffs and their physical way of playing and Yvan said: You can’t hit what you can’t catch. :-)
The jump he gets on the defenseman is still breathtaking nearly half a century later, when a lot of footage from that era looks like the players were skating through glue.
Ragulin must have thought Cournoyer would have to hold up at the blue line, but when Park hit him in full stride with that great pass, it was all over.
The most amazing thing to me about this goal is actually Park's passing. It looks like it could have been easily intercepted but he made a tape-to-tape pass.
He used to train with a 12 lbs lead boulder as a puck. Strong like an ox. like number 8 Alex Ovechkin. I met him in Laval twice, such a kind joyous man.
In the context of when in the game and series this was scored it was a very important goal. It was a moral boosting goal and helped the canadians to win the all important 2nd game. If they had gone down 2-0, it could have gotten ugly.
The Peter Mahovlich shorthanded beauty was even more important. Canada was up 2-0, the Soviets scored on the power play and had the man advantage once again when Mahovlich scored his iconic goal. Canada loses that game, the Soviets might have run the table.
While Henderson and Esposito get the plaudits today, Brad Park and Gary Bergman both played exceedingly well over the course of this series. Both were very underrated at the time.
@@thetruthhurts6652 ... Even if he was (and he was not), if Orr was so great, how come his Bruins could never beat Montreal in the playoffs? ... Classic example is 4/18/1971: 7th game in Boston.. and Orr did not score at all.
@@34Packardphaeton Bruins ran into a hot goalie in Dryden. Orr was always playing injured because back than the hacks tried to injure stars and Bobby did play recklessly. Add to that Habs had good depth thanks to all those free yearly number 1 regional picks they and the Leafs enjoyed.
The pass was so good that Park telegraphed the pass and the Russian still couldn't intercept it. Dryden once wrote that his first impression of Yvan was the size of his thighs. Sweet goal......

it all happened so quickly... From the moment Cournoyer goes past the defender to the moment when he released his shot, Tretiak had a lot of things to think about in such little time, and the busting speed of Cournoyer coming towards him ... I don't think Tretiak was fully ready for that shot. One thing's for sure : the Soviet defender got smoked ! (I do agree that the 3 goalies in that series weren't particularly good. I lived through the best hockey by far. Today's generation can't understand the sheer love of the game back then.
Absolutely electrifying ... that was Cournoyer
Poor lil roadrunner never bothered anyone,,,, just putting the puck in the net and having fun. A true hall of famer.
Loved The Roadrunner, my favorite Canadien in the 70's
my favourite player growing up. loved those old jerseys, they should bring them back

Tape to tape from Brad Park turns into an awesome goal from the Roadrunner! This was a key goal especially after the loss in Game 1.
Cournoyer, the Road Runner.

Give some credit to Brad Park. That was a beautiful pass!
Park was one of the best D men ever. If it wasn't for Orr, Park would have won the Norris many times over.
Oh, I disagree! Brad Park was “up there” and more.
@Les Moore For sure
@@ronbonora7872 To Brad Park's great credit, he never resented being second best to Bobby Orr. He said so in his autobiography.
