  • The Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines Collingwood leading the Tri-Service contingent in this years Brighton Pride parade. Entertaining the vast and enthusiastic crowd with marches and popular tunes on a hot and sunny day.
Did my best to follow the band but the logistics were a lot different from London and the narrower streets didn't help.
Think this was the first time that a military band had taken part in the Brighton Pride parade, I know that they have in the London for a few years now and to be honest I hadn't expected it this year and was only armed with my mobile phone so did the best I could, which is why the video is a bit dis-jointed .
The band were spectacular and the Bandmaster and Drum Major did a great job.

I’m surprised the people of Brighton didn’t boo and jeer the band. So much anti-military sentiment in that city.

The female Bandmaster, or should it be Bandmistress in the current woke climate, is marching in the wrong position. She should be in rear of the band behind the centre file. The position she is in would be occupied by a commissioned Director of Music if present. The fact a Bandmaster is in charge on this occasion makes no difference to normal band etiquette. PS She also needs to swing her right arm.

At the Jubilee Pageant, the PDM was marching alongside the Corp Drum Major, so this is an option.

@@iancrossley374 Thank you. Exactly my point. Oddly the PDM is a commissioned director of music, not a Bandmaster!! and thus was in the correct position in the front of the band.

Bandmaster is still the correct term. The position was occupied through necessity, due to frequent stop / starting, there wasn’t enough time to keep marching from the rear of the band. The correct position for a Director of Music is actually to the side of the band, in line with the first rank of Musicians, although the position to the rear may be occupied in the absence of a Bandmaster. By the book, it should only be the Drum Major to the front. That said, needs must in different situations, and for this particular parade, that was the best position to be in.
