How I Signed For Liverpool FC - Mark Lawrenson

Coming from a Man U fan, I've always loved Lawro. A fabulous player and perhaps an even better pundit. Him and Hansen were two of the best ever defenders and again possibly even better as pundits. Great guys.

Our own Nobby Stiles taught him everything Loro knows 😊

One of the Best signings in the Clubs history. Grew up watching the Lawro and Hansen combo. Best centre back partnership I have seen at Liverpool. Both had pace, were excellent on the ball and both read the game well.

I’d go as far as to say one of the best centre back pairings before and since the inception of the PL. Grew up watching them too. Classy, skilful defenders. Can’t think of too many pairings that come close to them. Maybe perhaps only Ferdinand and Vidic. Been others that have been different more physical styles of pairings like Adams & Keown or Hyppia and Henchoz but Lawro and Hansen were different class.

Lawro was the best 'recovery tackler' I've ever seen. Just when the attacking player thought he was free, Lawro would stretch his spindly leg and hook the ball back into Liverpool's possession. He really was world class.

My one vivid memory of seeing Mark play as a youngster for Preston was at Gillingham. Preston, after being the dominant side, went 2-1 down and Lawro completely lost his rag and scythed a Gillingham player down (I guess it was kind of satisfying) and was immediately sent off. He played with passion )

Lawrensen had lighting pace as a defender that would get the team out of jail at times.

Great player, thought he was a good pundit as well, articulate doesn't need to follow a script or end up speaking in riddles.

According to Stan Hey, we tried to sign him as a teenager but got out bid by Brighton wHo paid £100,000. Ended up paying much more a few years later. Similarly we had Dalglish on trial about 68/69 but didn't end up signing him.

MOTD has been awful since you and Hansen... the vibe has gone. Rubbish now.. Hardly tune in.
Respect to you Lawro... one of our best defenders ever... and we've had a few good ones. Loved the laughs on motd back then... it's just all following the narrative now. Awful.

I would rather play for Arsenal than Brighton on same money. Then and now.

Mark Lawrenson is the only footballer to be managed by both Jack and Bobby Charlton.
He's also the only footballer to win the league (Liverpool)and get relegated (Oxford) in the same season.(1988)
