before changing the wires. There is a way of connecting the pedal to keyboard. I have experienced the pedal works opposite when connected while the keyboard is on. so before changing any wires, try connecting the pedal while the keyboard is off and then switch on the keyboard and see. Hope it'll work fine.

Note: some keyboards (like the YPG-235) will try to detect whether it's a normally-off or normally-on switch, but only when you turn on the keyboard - so just plugging it in, it might be reversed, but if you turn it off and on (while not holding the pedal) it might work. Also some people (I don't know with what keyboard or pedal) have apparently needed to hold the pedal down while turning on the keyboard, if it was detected backwards for some reason. Also some keyboards (like the RD-700) might have a setting for it, to select the polarity of the pedal explicitly.

Okay, 6 years later but, I have the exact same screw driver as that flat blade wooden handle one. Thought it was unique. I#m in Ireland. I inherited it from me Da who would be 100 this year if he was alive, he died at age 69!

Just add an SPDT switch. Connect the red wire to the center pin, then connect the other pins of the switch to top and bottom contacts. Universal configurable sustain pedal.

If you would have read the manual, you would have realized that this can be easily solved by holding the sustain paddle while turning the keyboard on it reverses the polarity

Very cool build. Have you ever had problems with the elastic bands wearing out or getting dried out? I built something similar to this many many years ago, but used wooden clothes pins as my pivot and spring mechanism.

I knew there is a way to do it cheaper, not like 80USD I have to pay for a sustain.. Thanks for this.

Hey brod, why not just make one pedal with a polarity switch on the back rather than making two separate units? Im thinking also a wedge design with a momentary switch would be something to consider for the pedal.

Pls what are the measurements for the woods.
The heights, widths and thickness in inches

But if it is on the "wrong way" how do you use the pedal? Just shove your foot underneath?

hey there, hope you can help me here.
I actually build my own before i looked at your original pedal. it's a quick 'test make' with a very simple design just to see if i like the use of a sustain pedal as i'm a complete newby... so not as nice as yours ofcourse but still it's electronically oke so it should function but it doesn't.
The design is like a flat base plate and springy top plate glued together in a V. base plate on the floor and spring plate up in the air. 2 contacts on each side of the top V. together with some anti-slip at the base plate. when i place my foot on the springy plate it bends and the two contacts touch and close the circuit, which i checked and tripple checked. i used a mono jack just like you.
but once i plug it into my yamaha ypt230 it doens't work, it doesn't sustain and i don't know why. not when pressed and not when not presssed. any idea when the problem could be?
it would relly help me as i really don't know where to start.

I don't know why this pedal price is 1200+
It cost only 45 for jack 50 for wire 10 for screw
Rest of the things we have it all in our house ....

в общем всё не плохо, но идея без включателя-плохая идея, так как кабель будет часто обрываться...
    (не сложно догадаться - почему!?)

    • @SianaGearz

What? Just tie a knot in the cable or put a ziptie on so it's retained by the opening, use stranded wire, and have some extra slack or a loop going to the moving part to distribute the bend over a larger radius. With stranded wire, it'll last for decades. Keeping in mind the actual movement range of the moving element at the wire attachment position isn't a lot, it's large at the foot pedal end but barely nothing on the other.

you did the top measurement wrong. it should be 3 by 3/4 high and 3 by 3/4 wide not '2 1/2' wide
