I remember doing it once with a really stiff tape cos I was too lazy to use my thimble. It was uncomfortable as heck but the speed I sew was dramatically faster, since I wasn't constantly adjusting my thimble as I sew.
The good old grandma tech. Learn from the elders, kids. Call a nursing home and check if they need some charity activities like an embroidery day. Make a project with them, get pictures and help them embroider, you'll learn a lot and make them happy plus help them with motor skills. :)
A piece of leather, or pleather makes a great thimble. Just trace out two pieces against your finger and whip-stitch. Saves tape, and is more cushioned.
I learned to put sports tape on my knuckles from the kindest craft store owner and she saved my hands! Also if you ever need to draw on canvas and you’re afraid for it to show afterwards, use friXion pens (erasable pens) and you can use a hair dryer or a source of heat to erase it afterwards
Thank you for introducing Walker to us, I've just been to his website and umm I didn't know this art existed let alone such mastery over it?!!!??? It was such utter delight to go through his portfolio! Thank you thank you for bringing him into our lives 😍
I think this is my favourite video ever. It genuinely made me feel like I could actually have a go at it. Loved the collaboration, and especially the q&a, so many helpful tips.
@@Shmoxd I love all your videos, but all the tips meant that this week I’m going to grab my some clamps and my embroidery stash and get going. And never worry about changing your content, in case you’ve not guessed it, we come here for YOU and your personality as much as the inspiration. Seriously, I’d watch you reading and laughing at IKEA flat pack instructions.
Few tips: always spread/divide threads according to the fabric you embroider on unless you want specific effect, otherwise you are wasting your thread. Another thing when you embroider make sure you don't 'wrap' the thread all around the fabric but hit the needle back in in the closest area and pull it out to make another stitch, otherwise again you are wasting a lot of thread just by making loop around the fabric, sorry I don't know how to explain this in more clear way, English is not my mother tongue🙈. Also you can pre- cut all your thread on equal parts before staring embroidery, that way you won't have to lose more thread than you actually need and you will easily divide threads, another thing is - the more you have threads in the eye of your needle (please consider that you have it folded in half) the wider will be the hole you make on the fabric. I personally use 4 out 6 threads (not folded though!), so when folded it makes 8 if the fabric is thinner than 3 out of 6 and folded it will make 6, but here is another thing you may not fold the threads at all which means that each time you will have a 4 layered thread stitch, and a loop on only one end the second end of the threads will be free hanging from the needle if this all makes sense. 🙈Anyway I love the idea of using picture on canvas so you can add your touch to it, I also learnt that you can tape fingers it is very smart, by the way when I read photo I literally though that you are going to embroider on photo paper, I remember in school we use to that but it was old black photo papers that had no pictures on them it was quite interesting although it was challenging since you had to draw all the dots/placements of your needle hole beforehand. Try that if you have old pictures it is very interesting.💜
Every time I listen to you talk I get flashes of the late Paul Walker. Your voice and his are so similar. The embroidery is lovely, I think I may give it a go on canvas x
I love this so much and both of you too. Hot tip, there is an easier way to separate the strands. Pinch one end of the floss between your thumb and forefinger. Isolate one ply and pull it out while grasping the thread. It will cinch up under your pinched fingers, but won’t tangle. You uncoil it to its full length before pulling the next strand.
This format was lovely! Definitely one of my favorite videos so far, i love being able to learn about other artists and their tricks and I love seeing you collaborate with them and turn up with such different results :) More please!
Embroidery on magazines is actually how i started off embroidering just like sewing on napkins i always use unconventional items first, and i actually embroidered well sewed one of my canvases that was ripped came out fine to going to try out more. by the way they came out so good love all your projects its always what im working on, or in my long list of trying to do ❤
Those Chanel embroidery videos are really inspiring. But this video fires me up just as much. Super cool, thanks for letting us into your studio and thanks shmoxd for explaining everything with so much detail. I feel like this is something I can do now. Also.. I friggin love Klimt.
When splitting the thread the trick is to hold it at the top, then grab a singular thread and pull directly upwards to seperate. Knot free everytime 🙏🏽
Wow! This is so beautiful, it's inspiring almost poetic. Love it!!! Also your editing team is awesome. When you guys were embroidering and turning the canvas taking turns. I loved the effect, so seamless. I'm so happy that I found this channel, all thanks to a Rachel Metz video.
this is surprisingly timely??? i printed a few photos two days ago and bought some metallic floss and was planning to embroider circuit boards over the pics. awesome video, as always
Loved this video! Such beautiful work and so inspiring. It was kinda distracting how both of you weren't in-focus at some points. All those tips on how to embroider were great and I'm going to use them! Thanks for the video!
I did something similar to this ~5 years ago. Printed a pic of my dog on a piece of fabric. Did some embroidery and attached it to a pillow. The fabric was a bit thin, but worked ok. So may ways to be creative, so little time.
I haven't read all the comments but here goes - have you tried using a thimble instead of taping your fingers? They come in different sizes and styles and are great for pushing needles.
This channel is very interesting! My second video I’ve watched. I think it’s more shmoxd’s personality than anything. That said I think Punch Embroidery would be the easiest (after buying the pen) to master for many, that is until freestyling it!

Taping your knuckles is actually quite a smart way to get around using a thimble lol might have to try that when i'm sewing

I do that all the time when I'm sewing! I just use painters tape, the yellow paper one! It is cheap and has so many uses!

That from Halsey is very ironic considering she is now sharing artists on her Instagram and funding them with Magnum ice cream I believe.
The collab style video works really well! Hope you do more sometimes
I would really love to do it! I had this rad girl who does stained glass lined up.. but it fell through:/

Eww, Halsey and her production company didn't pay you for an embroidery project??
