Playing a chromatic scale on a DIATONIC harmonica?!

  • In this video I show where all the notes of the chromatic scale over 3 octaves are situated on a regular C major diatonic harmonica. I'm just using a bog standard Marine Band Deluxe for this, it has not been modified or 'set up' in any way.
The video includes visuals for where the notes are on the harmonica.

This is why I like diatonic harmonica. It is something Dark Souls game inside it you know? Bends were impossible but then you practice more and more...and here you go! Then overbends? Absolutely impossible, something like magic, days go by while you playing for yourself, and then first 6 overblow goes out finally - whoa! Like a beating Dark Souls boss like from 50th attempt. And then you made it automatically, easy, you casting magic by yourself. And all that inside small box. It is about your skills, something that never been inside you and then you grow it up inside by yourself.

Incredible! I did my 1st public performance of Zed-cars in school when I was about 6, so I'm an old "pro" on harmonica! Remember Zed-cars? I never knew about over-blow and all that to get those extra notes. What a fun style of teaching you have. You're a master.

We actually had a Zephyr when I was a kid and my parents would talk about Z Cars all the time, mostly they used to whistle the theme tune anytime we took off in the car! Thanks for the kind words, hope you're still enjoying your harmonica journey.😎

@@PaulGillings I was caught at the back of the class messing around with my harmonica and the teacher brought me to the front to embarrass me. Lucky I had picked up the first part of that tune. I got cheers from the whole class! It's better that I leave harmonica to experts like you though! I had forgotten the Z referred to the Ford Zephyr.

@@GuitarBasement brilliant 🤣 glad to hear I wasn’t the only one ever to get told off for having a harmonica in class! Keep playing that harp buddy as long as it’s fun 😎👍

Thank you Paul, for an amazing video and your excellent teaching style! I have been looking for a video that actually explained OB and OD with hole positioning, and this is the first video that I foudnd to really do it. It helped my understanding dramatically! I can now incorporate the ODs in my playing! Still working on the ODs, however I'm sure they will come in time. Looking forward to your future posts!

You are a fantastic player and your knowledge of the instrument is over the moon But I have no intention of torturing myself to attain these tricky notes. I focus on what the harp does naturally. Overblows remain beyond me.

No worries at all! Thanks for watching. 😎🙏 I just wanted to point out where they were and what our amazing little instrument is capable of.
I hope you continue to enjoy your harmonica journey 👍

Wanted to get a Harmonica to play melodies while playing Guitar, got a C-Harmonica, Was disappointed i couldnt play all notes, Saw some women who made some crazy improvisation on it. Wanted to know why and how she could play so much more notes than i can and sounding beatiful like a saxophone... First tutorial was about how to bend in notes, overdrawing, even could get to overdraw to Dd(1), pretty fast, but its hard/crazy, didnt work for other notes.
That tutorial only showed the black and blue notes you ve showed, and you pulled off that red notes,... pretty impressive. I gotta slight idea how much practise it is to be pull of those red notes.
Chromatic Harmonicas are no option while playing guitar. But this overblowing and overdrawing seems like alot of work to me.
Isnt there a third type of harmonica that enables you to play all notes without pushing that slet, like on a chromatic harmonica, or overblowing/drawing on a diatonic, but gives you a smaller amount of octaves or got 24 instead of 10 blowholes?

It’s an interesting journey, information is everywhere and yet can still be difficult to get hold of the right knowledge.
You are totally right, the overbends are tough to learn and get tight but they open up a whole new world when you do.
Seydel make a slide-less chromatic harmonica which would enable you to play in any key in one harp and have it in a neck brace for guitar playing too.
Thanks for watching, keep on Harpin!

@@PaulGillings Nice, thanks for that info. Gonna check that out. Yeah information and tutorials are easy to find, but i suppose about the existence of that nonslider chromatic harmoica i would ve searched a pretty long time.

Why don't get a Chromatic instead of blowing up your lips and tongue and lungs and still not getting the right notes? Why're you diatomic guys so stubborn?

It’s all in the interest of self improvement. I’m sorry you can’t hear that they are the right notes. It’s also not ‘instead of’ it’s really ‘as well as’. I do already play chromatic harmonica, I picked it up first before I picked up a diatonic when I first started playing harmonica. Thanks for watching anyways and best of luck in your own harmonica journey 🙏

Stubborn? maybe.... pureist? perhaps... i like the sound of bent notes on the harp.... There is so much you can do going in, coming out etc. etc. almost like a string bend instrument.... Highest respect for those that can get all the notes.... IT AIN'T EASY FRIENDS!!!
