Get a bass. Easiest instrument to get started on - one note at a time, big strings, broadly spaced frets, standard tuning means the scales and arpeggios are all the same "shape" regardless of what note you start from. Can't go wrong. Of course, mastering it - well, that looks hard. I've not managed that yet :)
