yeah me too my mother never asked me to clean anyone else's dishes but my own. Making someone slave over someone who's just as capable as you are is wrong.
That's life. I'm currently disabled, still waiting for my disability. My mother, who I moved in with because I can't support myself right now, had the audacity to tell me to get a job a month after moving in because $100 dollars a week is too much. I'm starting to realize most people 50+ right now have never had to take accountability in their life, mind you I had to give her most of my paychecks growing up along with my fathers "child support", which came to well over $200 a week over 10 years ago, for most of my life.
This episode was so much deeper than it showed. So many parents are so toxic by pushing all responsibilities on the oldest. Thinking it's okay because they're just parents. Pushing parents responsibilities to the oldest is not right. Plus thinking they're always right because they provide. No you have kids so you HAVE to provide. Was not their choice. The fact chris did it all these years with NO complaints and have the nerve to be mad because she knew she was wrong.
This is why having two parents in the house is so important, especially fathers. Stress and anger can cause any parent to make drastic decisions, without another adult in the house to bring back order imagine the end result.
Both parents are so essential in child's development, It's just ashame that a fair amount of woman under some sense of pride and independence think they can do a better job at raising their kids than the two of them because she has some issue with the man. I mean at least when men do it they walk out of the relationship all together but they know they are in the wrong and their stupid, when a woman makes such decisions they voluntarily doom their children to a lacking and unfair upbringing while thinking everything's good and believing their a great example for mother's and woman power cause they dumped the man. Of course this is when it's voluntarily, obviously no one has a problem with single mothers when it's out of their power and they doing everything they can to make ends meet.
I love the personalities between Tonya and Drew. Tonya, although she loves Chris, she's still in the immature stage of her childhood; wanting to selfishly take one of Chris' belongings: his radio. Although Tonya protests against Chris leaving, as loving sister would, she still doesn't seem too concerned. Whereas Drew is more mature, and decides to give some of his money to Chris. Whether it be only $1 or $5, it's clearly an act of selflessness, and he seems genuinely worried about his brother.
I couldn’t help but notice that Rochelle didn’t even react when Tonya openly expressed the fact that she hates Chris for no reason other than being her brother, the brother who does everything for her and gets in trouble because of her.
I don't blame Chris, Parents, they are children, not slaves, just cuz you pay bills doesn't mean anything. Get up and clean up your own stuff, work as a team/ Family.
The parents team work is I working and feeding and providing now while there are other siblings and it should be shared between kids I feel those are things to make a kid more responsibile keep shit clean
Carlton Jay the thing is in the episode situation it wasn’t even Chris’ job to clean the fishies it was supposed to be his younger sibling and since they didn’t do their responsibility Chris got in trouble
She don't any other way to be. This is how black women got through hard times and they hold onto it even when things are going well. My mother is the exact same. She doesn't know how to respect me as a person nor does she understand why she should even take the effort.
The fact that Rochelle couldn’t even say that she kicked him out says it all, I swear it’s like parents (especially mothers) can’t ever admit when they’re wrong just because “I’m the parent!”, like you kicked him out and there’s NO WAY around it
You could tell Chris was still pissed about this situation. Out of all the stories of his childhood, this one seems to still tot water for him. And his colorful commentary seems more pointed at his mom then usual.

It's not fair for him to be cleaning up all the time when he works, goes to school, and looks after his younger siblings. I hate when parents do this. Make the eldest child automatically become another parent. That ain't right. "It's just dishes". If it's just dishes, Drew and Tonya could do them. It's not about dishes. It's the principle of them not having to do shit while Chris does everything!
Rochelle was so wrong in this and I have so much respect for the dad for coming back home after working 2 jobs and still kept his cool and was understanding for poor Chris. I feel so bad for chris though
I was on Chris’s side on this one. I’m the older sibling and the daughter of immigrants. I had to do everybody’s work while I had a brother who was coddled and did nothing. I did my work, his, had to play interpreter, and got all sorts of things dumped on me. He was able to have a childhood and I was stuck cleaning up after everybody. That’s not fair.
That has it advantages. I grew up organized, responsible and educated, while my sister with "someone will do" attitude. Reality shocked her and she is more hard-working now
"Chris, you are a child. Parents don't negotiate with children." This is the problem with black parenting/family culture, period. The number of blown out of proportion arguments I've had with family because they have this backwards mentality where they view you having a difference of opinion (as a human being with your own views, value, and principles) as disrespecting them, challenging them and "talking back to an adult." Reality check for these "don't disrespect your elders", "it's my house, my rules" people: 1. Let go of your ego. It's not about me being a child, in any capacity. This is simply an interaction between two humans. My age or the fact that I'm a younger branch in the family tree should never invalidate or mean that my point of view and feelings should be dismissed. 2. Holding that "I'm your parent/your my child" nonsense over my head is BS. You chose to have a child. The child didn't choose to be born. So stop acting entitled like I'm meant to be eternally indebted to you for a decision that you made that, in reality, was made by you to solely suite your own interest when you made the decision. 3. If you want to use the "this is my house" crap as leverage, then don't be surprised if either, you and your child become distant, or, if when that child grows up and throws that same crap in your face when they're then the ones in the position of leverage. This episode was important.
Yep. If you never negotiate with your kids they're going to take away from that that they shouldn't try and change people's minds and they're going to struggle to negotiate with employers, business partners, tradesmen etc.
Thing is if you pay attention in all the series, Chris(the narrator) explains in no uncertain terms that these are a few reasons why Chris and his mother are distant...
What’s crazy is even though it’s unfair, Tanya nor Drew even offered to help Chris. They clearly see it’s wrong, but instead just let him take the heat for sure laziness.
Totally relate to this. I remember my mother yelling at me because I was watching TV with the rest of the family when she wanted me to help her cook. As a boarding school pupil home for the holidays, TV was a rare privilege because it wasn't allowed in the dorms. Meanwhile my younger sister who still couldn't cook at age 13 wasn't reprimanded, and I'd started when I was 11. Unfair.

He gets mistreated everyday single day at school and by his own family, does the chores for them and never says no to anything ridiculous they might have to say. Rochelle needs to apologize and so does Drew and Tanya for not helping with the dishes.
i have a daughter, and i learned mutual respect: she listens to me, and if she feels like she is being not listened to, i will calmly sit and hear her out. alot of the times she gives me good insight from her perspective. when i was a kid i was told: be seen and not heard. but with my daughter i learned: take a moment and listen, she may surprise you and be right.
now normally children should do what their parents tell them there should be no that talk but I had to side with Chris on this one why aren't his bother and sister ever made to chores . favoritism among siblings really does exist
So you shouldn't take the time to listen and understand your kids and wher they are coming from? Maybe when they re real young but once they get a little bit older and start becoming their own people with their own opinions you should understand where they are coming from and talk to your kids. That shit is what messes up kids and makes them turn out shit or what makes people not be able to think for themselves.
Parents need to listen to their kids. That’s why kids grow up to resent their parents because their parents think that since they’re the authority figure they can treat their kids any sort of way and expect their kids to sit back and take it.
It's dishes! You're acting like she told you to bring down the mob!..."actually the mob was slightly less vindictive than my mom" Why do they keep describing my mom so accurately...

@0:21 I don't think people caught what Tanya said here. Even though she knew darn well that Chris was leaving because of doing THEIR chores, she still implies that Chris is being stupid and should be doing their chores. Why didn't she offer to start doing her own chores from now on? She even asked for his radio, as if he was going to be gone forever. It's perplexing at how Rochelle instilled herself into Tanya.
She is being selfish in this scene, but she does stand up for Chris saying something like,"I don't like the fact that Chris isn't living here and I want him back!"
I wish they still make shows like this, where the dad is really the man of the house and the mom admits to being wrong. Nowadays, in TV, dads are always made into chumps.
THIS!!! Parents need to learn not to dump all the responsibilities on the first born child/girl/whatever ever. It is not a child’s responsibility to clean/take care of the children YOU and YOUR PARTNER decided to bring into this world. Have some common sense, a child can’t take care of a child. It’s okay to ask a child to clean after themselves and maybe their sibs every ONCE IN A WHILE, but when it gets to a point where a child feels stressed about always being the only one doing it, YOU as the parent have taken it too far. And honestly this point can’t be stressed about enough.
And that's the biggest issue with this episode. I am for obeying your parents and back talking against them should not be encouraged but if chris has been the only one who has done the dishes and drew and tonya are old enough to do them, I wouldn't blame him for back talking. Why should he be the only one. Rochelle is wrong. Period.
This comment aint nothing but the truth! I am the older sibling and when our father left our Mother I became a parent in a sense. It was really stressful. Your comment speaks volumes!!!
This is just proof to kids that parents don't _really_ know what they're doing. They try but they screw up most of the time. I love how they had to break down the expression "Cutting his arm off for putting his finger in the fan". Not _just_ because she didn't understand the metaphor, but because she didn't understand how kicking Chris out was too heavy of a punishment for not doing the dishes until they explained it.
I had to watch the actual episode and the ending made me angry AF: Julius tells Drew and Tonya to watch TV and tells Chris to do the dishes. Nobody learned anything.
I've seen this happen and it's sad. I had a friend growing up his mom piled up a lot of responsibility on him and I saw that his mom always seemed to be harder on him than his other siblings so much so that even their other family members started to tell the mom about her behavior. I also noticed that she seemed to have some kind of unspoken resentment towards him and I later found out that the he and his siblings had different fathers and then it started to make sense. I think his mom probably was hurt more by his father than the others and took it out on him. I know after high school we lost touch, but after watching this, I remember the embarrassing moments he had to endure. Wherever you are my friend, I hope you're in a better place in life.
Chris was definitely in the right here - he’s the only person ever doing the dishes and he really shouldn’t have to be. He has two sibling that could easily help him and get the whole ordeal done faster - there is zero reason for him to be doing it by himself
It's weird that Drew is only one year younger than him and Tonya about 4 years younger. It would have been a completely different story if Drew were like 7 and Tonya like 4.

"You kicked him out because he didnt do the dishes?" The same exact fucking thing my mom said to my dad. The others are literal children still, from 1-5 but I always have to clean up after all of them, because "you're the oldest you should just listen." Uhhh im a high school senior with multiple college courses and a part time job. I go to school, go to work, do my hw, and HAVE to babysit after all of that. But because the two other kids didnt want to do their dishes, I HAVE to. All I said was "it's not my day to do dishes." And he lost his shit on me, so all I said was "Can you just please leave me alone? Im tired." Then he went on some tirade, so I just locked my door, but that set him off, we got into a shouting match and he got physical and said some really not so cool things. He said that he hated having me as a son, that I was an ungrateful lazy kid, and that as soon as I turned 18 I was out of the house. All that because all I said was "it's not my day to do dishes" I left, but my mom begged me not to, but being at home hurt too much.

Jermain Ross lol My mom goes crazy if I open 2 boxes of cereal at once. I don't understand why. It's not like I'm not going to eat them both. And she doesn't even eat cereal.
My mom is the same too, she worries bout me wasting food despite she DON'T eat her food in the Refrigerator and waits like 2 weela and took my 20 dollars for eating her 4 small spicy chicken when she could've had 6 bigger pieces of chicken, why do mothers gotta be hypersensitive or temperamental I mean my isn't strict and doesn't tell me to do much, but can be very insecure, stubborn, patiently angry, materialistic, possessive, pushy, and cares too much which can get her too stressed out and overwhelmed and overreactive, but she'll never kick me out, she'll be rational and reasonable when she apologizes but the truth is she always says I'm a blessing and she's black.
This is why your village is so important when you're raising children. He left his mother's house, but you best believe they knew exactly where he went.
A lot of people these days can relate to Chris’s point not about the dishes but the unfair treatment of having to be the only one cleaning up after everyone else .
Funny how Tanya still wants something from Chris and my boy Drew gave something to Chris and asked for nothin after gettin booted out the house (I know she's the youngest) 0:31
The way Julius pointed out that she REALLY DID throw him out because of the dishes was a little funny to me. Lol the way he says it was like "seriously?"
Keep in mind, they're still just kids that are in the process of growing up. Rochelle was also a great mom, delivering proper discipline. She just didn't like the thought of one of her children disrespecting her authority. I can see Chris's point, but he should have approached it with more respect. She's still his mother, after all.
AutumnEmerald 101 she was an awful mom and the way she treated her kids impacted the way they lived their lives and grew up as the show went on, She made Tanya into a mini version of herself- she treated Drew like he was God and he achieved everything he wanted to and was basically universally worshiped, while she was downtrodden on Chris-
Jeremy Jackson That's the thing; Chris wasn't being disrespectful. He was fed up with having to do all the chores for the past few years. When he saw that Drew and Tonya were sitting in the living room watching TV and Rochelle told only Chris to clean the table and do the dishes, that's when he got fed up and said no. And I don't blame him. If he has siblings, then they should be doing some of the workload too
She kicked him out because she already stopped doing things for him since he’s all “grown up,” and when he started doing things for himself, he was winning, so she had to kick things up a notch.
I'm happy he stood up for himself. I left home roughly for the same reason. I'm the second oldest of 5 kids, yet I was the ONLY one cleaning, washing up after everyone else. Plus, i was expected to financially support my brother who's a year younger than I am. He would quit jobs, hang out with his gf 24/7 & I was paying for both our cell phones & car insurance. When you do it everytime, everyone takes you for granted. But the 1 time you say no, i refuse to- you're the bad guy.
Drew was a real bro by given him some money in the end, also his dad is such a good dad for getting mad at his wife for kicking Chris out for something so dumb and unfair.

"Chris, you are a child. Parents don't negotiate with children."
This is the problem with black parenting/family culture, period. The number of blown out of proportion arguments I've had with family because they have this backwards mentality where they view you having a difference of opinion (as a human being with your own views, value, and principles) as disrespecting them, challenging them and "talking back to an adult."
Reality check for these "don't disrespect your elders", "it's my house, my rules" people:
This indeed
Yep. If you never negotiate with your kids they're going to take away from that that they shouldn't try and change people's minds and they're going to struggle to negotiate with employers, business partners, tradesmen etc.
Yep.
Thing is if you pay attention in all the series, Chris(the narrator) explains in no uncertain terms that these are a few reasons why Chris and his mother are distant...

Unfair.

i have a daughter, and i learned mutual respect: she listens to me, and if she feels like she is being not listened to, i will calmly sit and hear her out. alot of the times she gives me good insight from her perspective. when i was a kid i was told: be seen and not heard. but with my daughter i learned: take a moment and listen, she may surprise you and be right.
now normally children should do what their parents tell them there should be no that talk but I had to side with Chris on this one why aren't his bother and sister ever made to chores . favoritism among siblings really does exist

"Somebody fired the maid"
Period.
