Wonderful! And to think that there was a period when the instrument was abandoned and no longer played. A real crime! A baroque organ is a treasure if it reaches at us, so we have the duty to keep it as much as possible in its original form, without distortions. It really is a great tool! I live in Italy, but if understood in France, in Albi, I will be happy to meet this wonderful machine in person. Many compliments Frederic.

Un grand merci pour cette belle présentation du magnifique orgue de Ste Cécile.
A une époque où il est de bon ton de revenir un peu plus aux valeurs fondamentales, simples et naturelles, il est important de montrer que depuis des siècles on peut faire de la belle musique à partir de tuyaux de plomb, avec des soufflets en peau de mouton et toute une mécanique de métal et de bois. La visite des entrailles d'un orgue ne laisse jamais les visiteurs indifférents, ils sont toujours stupéfaits par le nombre et la complexité des systèmes qui sont derrière la console qui, elle, leur est plus familière, bien que souvent peu visible (la vidéo pendant les concerts est, à mon avis, un plus incontournable de nos jours)
J'ai beaucoup apprécié vos improvisations mettant en lumière les différents jeux et plans sonores, et surtout le VRAI point d'orgue à la fin 😊

Bravo et merci pour cette présentation et démonstration de cet orgue. Réalisant souvent des vidéos d'orgues je vous félicite pour la qualité, en effet il y a très peu de place pour les cameras, l'éclairage est souvent difficile et il faut faire une prise de son (excellente dans votre vidéo) au milieu de la nef de la Cathédrale puis remonter tout ça. Donc bravo aussi pour le montage. J'aurais aimé une explication sur le pédalier, le talon pointe semble impossible à réaliser...

This organ reminds me a lot of the Dom Bedos built from scratch by B. Formentelli for a convent church in Rieti (Italy). Above all, the "French" pedalboard reproduced very similarly to Moucherel's organ.
Yes, I know this wonderful organ in Rieti ! For me, the "chef d'oeuvre" from Formentelli !

Bonjour Frédéric, quel instrument magnifique, avec ses sonorités limpides, profondes, variées, il y a aussi cette amplitude, dans les graves, dans le grand jeu (si j'ai bien compris) tant de précision pour un instrument très ancien. On doit je suppose s'approcher de très près des sonorités que JS Bach a connues à son époque ? (Ou peut-être était-ce différent encore?) Cette démonstration à la fois pratique et pédagogique est très impressionnante (écouter cet instrument me touche beaucoup) merci pour ce tour d’horizon complet!

Un très grand merci pour votre message et votre ressenti ! Nous avons effectivement beaucoup de chance à Albi d'avoir un instrument si précieux et si fantastique !!! Bach n'a pas connu d'instrument comparable mais il aurait très certainement été très heureux de le jouer ! Les orgues allemands étaient très différents des autres européens au XVIIIème s. ; ils avaient tous des caractères et sonorités différentes mais c'est toujours un défi intéressant d'aborder la musique allemande sur un orgue français et l'inverse également !
Hello Frederic, I see that on the Dom Bedos in Rieti you are at home! Beautiful instrument, great Formentelli! I note that on this occasion there is the "straight" pedalboard; I know that Formentelli during the construction has foreseen two types of pedalboard, one is the one you see in this video, the other is similar to the French one.
I invite you, when you happen to be in Italy again, to come to Catania, where the most particular organ in Italy is located inside the Benedictine Monastery. It is Donato Del Piano's organ, built between 1755 and 1767. It has 3 keyboards in a central position with pedalboard (in Sicilian style), one keyboard for the right side and one for the left side. This organ has a similar history to the Moucherel organ, as it was "transformed" during the 1920s, then in the 1970s it was completely disassembled and forgotten; many historic pipes have been lost or destroyed. Finally between 2002 and 2004 the organ was rebuilt by the "Mascioni" firm and brought back, as far as possible, to its original state. Today the instrument resonates in the magnificent Benedictine church, and you would certainly be happy to be able to play it.

You have noted that in Albi I use the French pedalboard while there was the German in Rieti when I recorded the video. There are two pedalboards that can be changed both in Rieti and Albi. @ Hello Frederic, yes, the fact of the interchangeable pedalboards on Dom Bedos in Rieti interested me a lot. So also in Albi there are 2 pedalboards: very interesting, especially with regard the possibility to German baroque organ literature. At the moment, there are no real concerts on Donato del Piano's organ in the Benedictine Monastery of Catania, just something occasional. Milles merci Frédéric pour cette formidable visite, j'en ai vu d'autres des orgues soit en vrai mais beaucoup plus petit ou par des vidéos (comme l'orgue de la cathédral de Chartres, Notre-Dame de Paris) mais alors celui-ci, quelle merveille !!
2 ou 3 questions s'offrent à vous: tout d'abord, concernant le 3ème clavier, celui de récit; il y a une boite expressive sur cet orgue ?
Concernant l'accouplement des claviers ente eux, c'est en système de tiroirs coulissants ou est qu'il y a des systèmes de tirasses par des "cuillères" aux pieds ?
Et puis pour finir, vous faites allusion au facteur d'orgue Formentelli qui avait rénover cet orgue ; hors j'ai vu que le facteur d'orgue qui restaure celui de Romans porte le même nom (Michel FORMENTELLI, de la maison H. SABY)

The current organ does not use an enclosed division, faithful to the Baroque era.
Enclosed divisions are an innovation by Cavaille-Coll during the Romantic / Symphonic era.
The organ does not use foot pistons for couplers; instead it uses the key cheeks, similar to now Dresden Trinity Cathedral Silbermann organ.
There are actually 2 foot pistons but I don't know what's that for.
Michel Formentelli est aussi le restaurateur de l'orgue de l'abbatiale de Mouzon (Ardennes) qui était aussi l'oeuvre de Moucherel. Cet instrument est également remarquable bien que sensiblement moins grand que celui d'Albi.
