  • www.footankle.com/peroneal-te... Shockwave therapy is likely an effective treatment for peroneal tendonopathy, which is a common cause of pain on the outside of the foot and ankle.
Shockwave acts to stimulate tendon healing by promoting the growth of new blood vessels and the release of growth factors that can help to heal peroneal tendon pain.
In this video Seattle podiatrist Larry. Huppin will review the advantages and disadvantages of shockwave therapy as an option for treatment of peroneal tendonopathy.
Dr. Larry Huppin is a nationally renowned authority on orthotics and biomechanics and a podiatrist in Seattle specializing in treating active people. My MRI reports states "chronic ankle sprain". What is chronic ankle sprain?

I sprained my ankle 4 years ago and have been in chronic pain ever since. It took a year to get a MRI (which discovered a split tear). I have done PT, steroid injections, PRP, and just got lateral stabilization surgery in December and it still hasn’t solved the chronic pain. I have heard about shockwave therapy, but I’m not sure if it’s too late.

It really depends on the diagnosis. Make sure you have a definitive diagnosis for the cause of your pain. If you are not sure you need to get more opinions until you have one. Then I can let you know if shockwave might help.

Could this work with chronic anterior impingement as well

Depends on the underlying cause. Often anterior impingment is due to a bone spur on top of the talus (ankle bone). In that case, shockwave is not likely going to help. if the anterior pain is due to a tendon issue, then shockwave can often be very helpful.

I am pretty sure that shockwave therapy is what my podiatrist was talking about for my peroneal tendonitis, if my insurance gives the approval, starting Dec. 14.

      Did it help?

I don't think my insurance will pay for it. I've heard that's the case with most, they don't cover shockwave therapy. I've also heard the treatments are expensive if paying out-of-pocket.
