  • democracynow.org - We turn now to the case of the West Memphis Three - the young men in West Memphis, Arkansas, who were imprisoned for the 1993 slayings of three eight-year-old boys after an investigation largely fueled by unsubstantiated rumors of a Satanic ritual. The new documentary, "West of Memphis," was co-produced by none other than one of the convicted youths at the heart of the story, Damien Echols. Echols and his two co-defendants were released last August after spending nearly two decades in prison, all the while proclaiming their innocence. Recent DNA tests did not link the men to the scene and showed the presence of others who have never been identified. The film alleges Terry Hobbs, stepfather of one of the victims, may have been responsible for the murders. And, the new documentary suggests the three young boys were never mutilated, but preyed on post-mortem by snapping turtles commonly found in the Arkansas-Tennessee border town. Democracy Now! recently spoke with Echols in a rare extended interview at the Sundance Film Festival. "I didn't have any faith in the justice system because I had seen how corrupt it was, all the way to the core, from the inside. And that completely took away any faith I had in the system whatsoever," Echolds said. "What I did have faith in was all the people that came to our aid. You know, the supporters and the investigators and everybody that rallied around us. That's what I had faith in and that's why I believed I would eventually get out." We also spoke to Echols' wife, Lorri Davis, and film director, Amy Berg.

    What I don't understand about the American's court system is that if there's no real hard evidence then why were they ever convicted. What happened to the saying "Innocent till proven guilty". I'm sorry if you believe I'm not being quite fair, but, the American's court system is atrocious.

      I live in New England …a lot more fair here than the hardcore ,fundamentalist,right wing Bible Belt town …anything goes on the ignorant south …just look at what was done to the blacks ,,just a few decades ago

    These dudes are so blatantly guilty. It amazes me that people lack the analytical ability/insight/instinct to observe the fact that Damien Echols is a pathological liar and a sociopath. The guy has already admitted to being responsible for these brutal crimes. It's sad to see these pathetic youth who see a "kindred spirit" in the "misunderstood" Damien Echols be taken in by his buillshit. He's duped all of you.

    Thank you to intelligent documentaries. Thank you. West of Memphis explained a lot. These men suffered for so long. They should be compensated for the 18 years they were wrongly jailed.

    Disappointed Democracy Now fell for the hype surrounding this case. Democracy Now should shed light on real injustice and not give time to this child killer!They still have no alibi and a fellow accused who has confessed many many times including to the police officers on the way to jail. That is not a coerced confession! After sinking tons of money into new DNA testing, their own lawyers asked for the Alford plea. They ultimately choose to take a guilty plea instead of going to trial and proving their innocence with a 20 million dollar defense team. Interesting choice for a railroaded group.

      +robertaglass Then you didn't see the documentary. The prosecution team was not going to concede because if they got a new trial, they would be found innocent because of the forensic science not available in 1993/94. The three men would sue the state and possibly walk away with $60 mil in their pockets- DA's own words. The state cared more about the money and bad press, the original judge got elected to public office and would look like a fool, but the good part was he can't interfere. The state supreme court was the only court to grant the appeal because a panel of judges saw the logic of allowing fresh forensic evidence to be admitted. I still can't understand why police used entrapment with suspicious witnesses and a drugged-out cellie whose own social worker said he was lying. Most importantly the police were clumsy at criminal profiling, the lead detective assumed occultism because one of the victims had their genitals torn off simply because they couldn't find evidence of sexual attack. They didn't bother to look for a REAL criminal behavioral expert or any expert that actually deals with criminal cases that involve the hokum that is called occultism. As a kid watching the news on this trial, all prosecutors, media, and police all I could see wanted to focus on was some fucked up bullishit devil worship because they're southern fundies who are hypocritical. I mean Miskelly's ex-girlfriend that was shown on the first HBO doc with him on the phone having a sex marathon, and what's on her bed? A book about being born again by that charlatan Billy Graham. Is that proper for a conservative southern belle and xtian? Come on now...

      +Ruby Marlowe I have seen the incredibly misleading documentaries. But I have also read the court documents and the case files available for all at www.callahan.8k.com. Jessie Misskelley confessed no less than five times 4 after conviction and against the advice of his lawyer. Read the case files before you blindly swallow the PR of the West Me,phis Three. They have had a great legal team and their PR representative Lonnie Soury represents General Motors in addition to these child killers. They have not exonerated themselves because they can't. A hair matching 4.5 million people is not evidence of their innocence. If you want to argue the facts of the case fine but please stop regurgitating things you've seen in a documentary produced by this child killer.

    Yeah they're guilty...I wonder why Jessie confessed so many times even in the police car about the murders and even against his attorney's advice? Was their first trial sloppy? Yes it was. Their alibis didn't hold up because the phone girls denied being on the phone with Damien. Guilty. and now he gets to hang w/ celebs. And its no surprise that Jessie misskelly is under the radar.

    Exhibit 500 tells of Damien's time in mental institutions.

    • @MissEcoGlam
      @MissEcoGlam 9 лет назад +1

      yes! because a cop near where he lived had it in for him (LONG before the murders took place). Damien was seeing a girl whose parents didnt like him,(well what parent would really when he did wear all black and didnt look like a nice young boy! but if people knew about damiens childhood they might understand why he liked black) so asked this policeman to intervene. The cop abused many laws when he wanted to, and Damien didnt know his own legal rights -being 16 and all!. This cop SENT Damien to the mental institutions because he could! not because he should have been there. Psychologists in the institutions told Damien he shouldn't be in there and let him out. You do realise that cops can pretty much do what they want don't you, especially decades ago.

    Eddie vedder; a person who claims to know 100% if someone is lying by looking into their eyes. LoL. Holy crap what an ego!
    Hey eddie, why not cure the blind? Maybe walk on water? Lets free everyone in prison eddie believes!!!
    We dont need polygraphs, just eddie. Why only damien, eddie? His case isnt the only case.

    I also got my facts from Callahan so obviously people can read the same stuff and still have differing opinions. I haven't seen anything that points to their being guilty and you and others have obviously read things differently, doesn't really matter anymore since the 3 are now free and nothing anybody says will change that.
