KONA Vs IONIQ Electric Interiors Compared

  • A quick trip to Oslo Norway allowed me to get inside for the very first time the new, much longer range Hyundai KONA Electric. (They're rare as unicorns in the UK so I haven't been able to get near one!)
Sadly I couldn't do a test drive... But I did film my impressions of the KONA's interior and matched these shots for side-by-side comparison to our second-hand IONIQ back in the UK.
The KONA is a bit smaller, probably less aerodynamic, but has a very nice, quality, driver-focused feel, just like our IONIQ. The two cars feel very similar and familiar too, so moving from one to the other should be no problem - apart from a bit less boot/trunk, and possibly interior space.
My next challenge will be actually to drive one... somewhere in the world!

Great comparison that rings true: I managed to get a Kona in the first UK release and we already have an Ioniq EV. Kona has some good features that the Ioniq doesn't have and vica versa. For instance the Kona can be bought to a full stop with left regen paddle but the seat doesn't have a memory and doesn't automatically slide back on entry and exit, much missed! Both great EV's and a pleasure to drive.

Amazing work! Never seen such a good comparison of these two. Especially with back to back same angle footage.

Enjoyable comparison. I'm one of those on a waiting list for the Kona. Contract signed July 2nd 2018, eta is Q1 in 2020. Which tells a story of the que. As you mention, EV's are not a rare sight in Norway, last year alone more than 46.000 new EV's were sold. We have a bit north of 10.000 public chargers where just over 2.000 is fast DC chargers. The future seems to be bright for EV's the next 2-5 upcoming years.

Very informative video. Here in Nova Scotia the dealer hasn't received any Kona EV's either. They have also pushed back the delivery date for the first reservation holders to sometime around the end of the first quarter of 2019 from beginning of November. On the positive side the dealer has said that they will be receiving one for the dealership for test drives in that first delivery. Perhaps I will be able to test drive one in the new year.

Great comparison! I like Kona EV better with its almost 500km range... I currently have a LEAF now, but looking to get Kona EV if it ever comes to my "state."

I wonder why nobody seems to notice: Coming from an i30 (the good old 2012-model), visibility through the front screen seems severely limited in the Ioniq. The Ioniq felt to me like sitting in my i30 and having the sunblocker/visors down. Maybe it´s because I am 1,85 m height. Seeing videos about the Kona, it should have a way bigger field of view also concerning the upper angle through the windscreen, much less "tunnel-vision". Could that be correct?

My Ivan is upset about being referred to as an older model. So where do you keep your granny charger i did not see it in the boot

Nice comparison. Having got used to the wider, low Ioniq I'm not tempted by the Kona personally. If you really needed the range I'm sure it's a great car. Ioniq hits a real sweet-spot for me as a 60-mile a day commuter. Did you say Kona has a 2 year wait now?!

Interesting, great comparison thanks. What is/was putting me off the ioniq was the only 28kw battery everything else I like. So I was considering the Kona instead but its a huge trade off of great huge battery, less space and naf styling (crossover design rubbish) v small battery with more space and "sensible" styling. Guess I need to wait for the updated ioniq with a bigger battery, 2019? 2020? oh well.

The interior of both cars are almost the same. There is not a lot more room in the Kona vs the IONIQ

KIA eNero is a bit larger than the Kona EV. I think that it might hit the sweet spot for a lot of potential EV buyers. On the other hand, at the
