This has been one hell of a year for Remco. Podium on the Tour de France, double Olympic Gold medals in the TT and Road Race, and now a second TT World Championship Gold. The guy has been incredible to watch.
Hey Chris, The official doing the start countdowns, was a pretty handy bike rider back here in Australia. And also a very good bike mechanic and shop owner. Cheers
Yeah, I'm fascinated by your multi-layered detailed breakdown of these events; your excitement during the telling brings us into the drama of the racing-
Happy to hear you are enjoying the videos. The TT’s are the hardest to get the stories all paired up together to make a good video because there are so many riders going at the same time on the course and I really enjoy making the video line up as closely to how you would have saw it live. But it always seems to come together nicely. 👊🦋👍
Jay Vine really had a shot on a medal, really sad thing, this season has been tough on him, thanks chris and garrett for the coverage, fine work as always
Fascinating to see that Evenepoel had gained 5.5 seconds on Ganna long before the first timecheck. You show how Ganna had a clumsy first few corners. Congrats to Evenepoel for holding himself calm in the face of the chain coming off (though you'd expect they'd have rehearsed getting on the bike and making sure he didn't pedal backwards). That 5.5 sec is pretty much the time difference at the end. Wow! no room for any vagueness even at the start and round first bends. I wonder if it helps that Evenepoel is so low and long for his height: it's great for aerodynamics but maybe also good for taking corners - contrast someone tall with long legs so their centre of gravity is higher, making corners more clumsy. Evenepoel having been an academy football (soccer) player till mid teens, he'd have only got that far with short legs to long torso ratio for low centre of gravity and strength on the ball
Primoz is a several-time all-time defending champion, but the aging process is for everyone and last year's Vuelta was the official start of his, no? Not that he was in any mood to surrender his crown but it happens. And cheers to him and his exotic beverage company on this year's big Vuelta win, great to see as Sepp didn't have anything to offer this year and O well. And I'm still a little steamed that the pros find it special to do two races in Canada without even a meet-and-greet for Stateside fans in an airport lounge. It would have been beautiful, posing for photos and drinking Shirley Temples. 😀
there was this moment when I saw the top 10 list and OMVC was there. I immediately paused the video and was about to write a comment. but then I decided to see first how it'd pan out. I had this laugh when you did mention OMVC! (nah..just sharing guys)..
So Remco not only had to get a last-second chain fix but also lost his power meter in the process. Yet, he still managed to pace himself to have enough time to celebrate before the finish. Amazing! So Chris, when you prepared the commentary, did you know about Remco's chain issue before commenting on Ganna's technique? That is, were you lucky, or did you deliberately set things up?
I saw Ganna pedal backwards and remembered it the minute I saw the chain drop on Remco. I knew at that moment that the two stories together were going into the video. One of my favorite pieces that I put together was the Belgium Worlds in Leven 2021. There it was French rider Christophe LaPorte that flatted with about 180k to go. He was running full gas to get to the team car for his spare bike. I thought, Wow, he is really in a hurry to get to his spare bike and the racing hasn’t even started yet. Then Bam, the French started attacking before the next climb started at 178k. It’s all about the details in T🦋E. 🤪😀🦋👊👊👊🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Remco recently said that he would cut down on TT training (bucket list done) and focus on climbing. GC are won in the mountains and consolidated in TT. Giro and tour will be main objectives
I’m not sure Primoz knows for sure. Judging from last year’s Vuelta, if Primoz is going well towards the end of the road race I think he’ll attack Tadej just like he attacked Sepp Kuss.
Peddling backwards introduces more slack due to less tension in the chain, the derailleur is working the wrong way. So slight misalignment as nothing is bang on between one big ring and cassette, or stiff link etc could cause an issue. It happens before the chain catcher can do anything.
I was amazed by Vine's performance. The surprise of the day for sure. So gutted for him that he couldn't keep the bike upright. The guy needs bike handling lessons, and then who knows what he can accomplish.
Amazing all issues with 1 x chainrings with Primos dropping a chain in the past caused by a pothole and now just spinning the cranks backward. and the chain comes off. I have been running a 1 x on my mountain bike for 10 years and haven't had such bad luck.
If a 110kg sprinter's coach/soigneur can give them enough of a boost to set their pedals on the track, I feel like an 85kg TT specialist's guy can do the same! Would be a lot less effort than finagling that chain methinks!
@ChrisHornerCycling On a basically flat ITT, it's about power per kg and don't forget about the aero. They are riding well above 50km/pro hour, so your aero needs to be excellent. So even if Ganna is producing more watts per kg as Remco, he loses this benefit by not being as aero. Just scientific fact. I love riding as well. I can not count the times when the wind turned into headwind and after 140 km, me damn, I need to change gears, my speed dropping and those last 40 kilometers are horrible, like never ending. Then I am glad I am finally home.😂
Belgium and Remco going to provide Hard resistance against Podacar and Slovenia, best performance from Asgreen in TT in years. Hope he is Going to EF Education, need some New challenges 😜🔝❤️
Flat tire in the Olympic road race. Now the dropped chain in the start house and the lost power meter. Remco will have a head full of gray hair by 30…..along with the trophies and medals of course. 😂😂
Hehehe. Luckily the riders had two minute intervals between departures so the mechanics (not sure if there was just one mechanic and kind of two helpers, or two mechanics and one official that was a helper) had enough time to fix it. 😱😬🦋👊
Chris the number 2 cyclist of the world is Remco man, he wins in tt, mountains, one day classics, you named he wins, in grand tours Remco have to step up his game to beat Tadej Pogcar, but Remco is the number 2 for sure .
Except with a clutch derailleur. I have a mechanical sram rival set up 1x (no chain catcher) on my cyclocross bike. It's got a Type 2.1 clutch or something like that. Never had to worry about the chain falling off even going down some XC MTB level trails. Only problem, I hate 1x for how they wear out chains so quickly. Not a problem for pros..
I believe that Remco's real source of the problem was a *Stiff Link.* You can see it start the problem almost immediately at the base of the chainring. It looks as an arrow pointing at 5 o'clock approximately. I can't see if it was at the quicklink. If I'm right, how can something so easy to prevent can happen in a pro sport especially to the number one contender in the world championship. I can't believe the level of amateurish incompetency of pro cycling. Here, I'm not talking about the mechanics themselves but rather about the management who doesn't have the clairvoyance to put enough ressources so that the mechanics can do their job with the proper attention to details. If they are always on the run, these things are going to keep happening.
Something always gets missed sooner. When I was kid looking outside in to any pro level sports team it looked so well organized. Then I got into many different teams and realized it’s mostly smoking mirrors. 💨 🪞 🤪🦋👊😱😬🤔👊
Remember , Ganna weighs 15-29Kgs more, therefore whenever the road goes up, he is at a disadvantage. Look back and see how many TT FG has won when the course is lumpy. I guess few to 0
I tried to both but ran out of time. Had some family stuff at home that had to be done today also. I don’t understand why they would put both races on the same day. Why not one Saturday and the other on Sunday, then I could have fitted both in. 🥲🦋
Remco pedalling back was pretty stupid, since it happened earlier this season already at the Basque Country ITT. It was his own mistake, as he stated very honest after the finish. But men what a time trial again ?!
Yep. There is doubt but don’t stress on it too much. A TT just isn’t the same thing as a road race. I have done much worse and still been good for the road race. 🤔🤞🦋👊💪🇸🇮
I just think it's pathetic when he stares as mechanic doing this and it's obvious he has no clue of what's going on! I never saw Lance Armstrong for Fabian cancellara or Chris horner drop a chain at the start because they know not to do that because they're professionals oh I'm sorry they're not around anymore now we deal with a bunch of kids who can't change a tire on their bike let alone put a chain on a chain ring!!!!

@@ChrisHornerCycling So, what was this broken part? And why did the (Shimano?) Powermeter failed?
@@ChrisHornerCycling Yes and you adroitly make it happen-
Best post ride commentary out there. Your deep knowledge from your long pro career really adds value.
My favorite non recap show on RUclips ❤
I expected Remco to win but what a ride by Ganna given his recent problems. Mega ride by Vine with that crash.
👊🦋
Remco is a Beast, Sat up at the end and still beat Ganna for Gold.
And with all the chain problems at the start ramp!
I loved the sit up. 😀🦋👊💪🔥
not only a beast, but 'prolly the most aero rider out there, by a long shot.
Jay Vine really had a shot on a medal, really sad thing, this season has been tough on him,
thanks chris and garrett for the coverage, fine work as always
What, no mention of Affinni getting a draft off a motorbike?
Yes it truly has been a hard one for Jay. I love how he seems to stay focused throughout it all. I have seen many riders just stop trying. 🦋👊💪
#GetWreckedJay - his own hashtag he made about himself 😅
Great commentary, the Best of thr best
Thanks 👊🦋
Just top 10.
Bad luck 4 Jay Vine. 😥
Thanks Chris &Garrett.
Top ten is better than Roglic today. 🤪🦋👊
At this point is it really bad luck for Jay Vine? The guy cant ride his bike.
Chain catchers are treacherous! Great recap Chris, thanks for no spoilers unlike some who shall not be named.

Agreed. 👊🦋

Remco is so dang good. He is some kinda small package of a dynamite this kid. This kid has a big engine. Ganna humiliated Primoz spectacularly 😅.
Remco is on fire ❤
He's got a pretty good shot next week. 🛋️🦋
🔥🦋👊💪
If Remco keeps improving on his climbing skills, watch out! He’s turning into a GC beast! Thanks team Horner! 🦋👊🇨🇭
Affini riding super strong lately!
Do you know if MVDP will do the road race in a week? He just did well in TdL. It will be a great race to watch. Thanks for the superb ITT summary!
I guess even the BESt have chain problems just like me! Too bad I can’t keep up with them after we get our chins back on!
Yep. Chain dropping comes up often. 😱🦋👍
Kudos to F Ganno👍 Primos is already a star in his own right💕
Ganna got some skills 👊💪🦋🇮🇹

I’m not sure Primoz knows for sure. Judging from last year’s Vuelta, if Primoz is going well towards the end of the road race I think he’ll attack Tadej just like he attacked Sepp Kuss.

I have been running a 1 x on my mountain bike for 10 years and haven't had such bad luck.
The best year of remco and pogadcar so far. But i dont think either of them will win the world. I was eager on watching the time trial
Apparently the part falling of the bike was the magnet necessary to count the pedal cadence. Would explain why the power meter didn't work...
normally primoz wouldnt finish so low, thats got to be fatigue and he's probably using this as training for the road race.
He was there to win.
Could be he is too rested. Hopefully this week turns around for him. 🤔😱🦋🤞
Too much flat for him to have a chance and the climb was super easy if Ganna did so well

Chris, how it is riding in TT helmets? Is it worth risking overheating compared to less optimised helmets?
Yes, Remco is left handed. I watched his recent video where he was adding up calories he ate, and had the pen in his left hand.
Is it the camera or does Horner have Hulk size hands?
Belgium and Remco going to provide
Hard resistance against Podacar and

All of the mechanical stuff for Remco happened BEFORE the start. Remco had a great TT from start to finish. Rode to perfection.
Yep. Perfect 🔥🦋👊🇧🇪
magnet for shimano power metre
I’m surprised they are still wearing smooth shoe covers and those full carbon shoes. Wind tunnel testing shows laces are more aero
Flat tire in the Olympic road race. Now the dropped chain in the start house and the lost power meter.

Remco drops the chain, Roglic dropped the chain during Giro TT - what kind of sh*t technology is that 😂

What site are you watching the race on?
So the chain catcher didnt catch the chain and just blocked putting back on, unnecessary complication?
6 .43?,..Was he on the same route as everyone else?

Yes, Remco is a lefty. We are always in our "right" state of mind.....😏

that's a shocker

That was weird watching Remco's chain come off at the start. Never seen a chain do that.
It’s crazy when it happens. You can feel it in your feet right when the chain gets stuck and then drops. Immediately you know it’s red alert time. 😱🦋🚨
Can happen back pedaling depending on chain line in 1x
Except with a clutch derailleur. I have a mechanical sram rival set up 1x (no chain catcher) on my cyclocross bike. It's got a Type 2.1 clutch or something like that.
