  • Hiking steep descents before I started hiking, I thought that going up hill with a heavy pack would be the hardest thing to do. Until I realized that hiking down a steep descent was far worse.

Hi and welcome back to Hike and Seeker channel.
In today's episode, I want to share with you tips for safe hiking when faced with a steep descent.
Hiking steep descents, is easier when you don't have a heavy pack on.
Having a heavy pack on your back, makes the descent far more precarious.
While your trekking poles do act as a brake. Attention should be taken, in not putting all your pack weight and your own weight onto the poles. If you do and you slip, or the poles slip, then your in all sorts of trouble. Serious injury can easily happen.
If there is an easier way down, then take it. Even if it takes you a bit longer to get to the bottom.
Some clear descents can be traversed using a zig zag pathway going downwards
Stay safe out there, on those steep descents, I hope to see you on the next episode!

A good informative video. Very hard to demonstrate on your own. Well done.

Hello, sticks can help a lot. Great presented. I never use poles because of the camera, but I should 😁😁 . Thank you and have a nice weekend. Greetings Alex and Alex

I never used hiking poles in my younger days, but now they are part of my kit. Thanks for commenting on the video. Have a nice weekend as well.

Yeah I agree that downhills can be as hard as uphills. For now don't use poles except on scree slopes though.

Trekking poles are a personal choice. From my perspective they work, particularly with a heavy pack on my back going down hill (and uphill) That depends on the type of downhill as well. On a smooth downhill with no rocks or other trip hazards no trekking poles. No heavy pack, no trekking poles either.
