This is my second time watching this video. It still kept my interest the whole way through. My wife says I am too old for camping. :( I disagree. Camping and amateur radio, what a great combination!
My second time watching this one as well. I agree camping and radio work well together. I also disagree with your wife, can one ever be to old for camping? Cheers, KI5FME.
Yeah, I have people tell me they like longer. So I leave it all in there. I figure if people don't wanna watch they don't have to. Tnx for the comment I hope I inspired you!
I have been using a fishing pole with a one oz weight to get my antenna in a tree. Cast from the far side towards your radio, then hook your ant to the fishing line and reel it up into the tree towards you. I find this method works great and I can use the pole for fishing. You don't have to carry that big launcher. Also, use the narrow filter on that rig to cut the QRM. I have a ft891 and it has amazing filters right out of the box. Great vid.
Love your channel Tom! Just getting back into operation from a multi year absence. Just purchased some HF equipment including a used but well sorted Icom IC 735. I owned one before and turned the power output down to operate at a five watt maximum which I’m going to do with this one as soon as I receive it. I’ve also been a big backpacker and camper. I’m definitely going to be operating QRP CW while camping as soon as I can! Prior to disappearing I was QRP CW only and will be again. Ha! Southern Fried Chicken. I hear coyotes EVERYWHERE. At my mom's in Oklahoma, we have them running around our neighborhood. When we went to Arizona I saw one running.
We have an ft991 and when taking out for field ops the radio only runs at 50% output on a 50 amp deep cycle battery. Does the 891 share the same characteristic? What type of battery are you using for 891 field ops to get full potential from the 891? Keep the awesome videos coming Tom. 73/44 KE2YK

That radio has built in narrow band filters for CW. You can tune into the 10s of Hz. You could have easily taken out the QRM. Take advantage of the features you paid for!
Great video I hope to hear you on the bands one day ! Also just a tip . That Circular polarizing filter is adjustable. Once you put it on the lens they typically have a portion on the filter that you can spin around ! Just look through your viewfinder to get the correct polarization on what glare you’re trying to remove either the sky or ground etc. :) hope that helps. Keep it up I love the videos ! 73’s DE N5ABA
That helps a lot. So, what happened was.... first of all, new camera to me. Still learning it. Super sunny out, so the screen was basically very hard to see. I didn't realize that it was set to 3700K white balance from when I was last using it indoors. It looked fine in the sunny. So the first half of the video the colors are weird. I did my best to color correct. Now I also had that filter on, but when I would spin it, I didn't notice a change? It seemed as if it was stuck at just 1 level of polarization. Now that you mention this, I will take a second look and see what I can do by adjust it. Thanks for the informative comment! 73

I had that same chili mac Camping in Yosemite. Pretty cool book. Especially essential for the Midwest here. That Modelo in the background is a nice touch. Was there meat in that Pistol case? We need to some some footage of coffee in the morning!
Chili mac was pretty darn good. I woke up and realized I had no cup or mug so I just went thru Mcdonalds for coffee. Ha. I really screwd up the video actually. The white balance was set wrong, weird colors in the first half. I forgot to bring my big SD card so I ran out of space. Had to use my phone. Turned out ok though. THanks for the comment. I need more chili mac.
Let me start off by saying that your video was awesome and entertaining: good show! I remember this operating session and the pileup that formed around me! I will say, it's always interesting hearing what you sound like on the other end of the radio =) Thanks for posting the video! 73 de KM4SQS

Another Nice Video Tom: I was hanging around on the CW bands last weekend on 40m listening & heard a lot of ritty. Too bad I missed your call. As for the coyotes they often are howling here at work on the afternoon shift, when I have to come in 4 early here at Ford EDC1. They’re just about everywhere in America even here in the City of Dearborn. And I can’t believe those Second Amendment folks! geez they don’t even wait till 9 AM to start shooting off their weapons. Just finished watching another one of your videos. Getting ready to do a little outdoor operating here, as well, if the wx ever cooperates. Been operating portable this past week indoors, as I'm spending the week away from home for work. I used to run a Icom ic-706 mk 2, but, just picked up an ic-7300 to replace it for portable ops. The 7300 just hears so much better, and I like being able to see the band activity. I worked Eddie, k4ngr from here too! I get upset with digital creeping down below 7.080 myself! Mostly the ft8 crew. And it's not even crowded up where they should be! Guess we need to maintain a strong presence with cw there. Anyway....I enjoy your videos, as they're not "polished", and include your defeats, as well as victories. I keep listening for you, but, haven't heard you yet. I'm usually between 7.05 and 7.06. I can usually work the 9 call zone, but, mostly the state of Illinois. I'll keep an ear out. Keep up the videos. I'm subscribed. 👍
Great comment. I love it. The 7300 is incredible. I may take it portable with me someday just for the heck of it. I got a nasty comment from a guy that lectured me on how anyone can do anything on the bands. Well, not really. They were outside the norms and way out of bounds IMO.
