But in general, best to avoid, if possible, driving in old snow, because skidding can result in car falling in khud. In fresh soft snow, no problem driving. Also, snow becomes hard on road, but not so hard on muddy roads. That is why in high mountain passes, the border roads organisation intentionally keeps certain shadow area high passes roads unpaved and muddy, so that army trucks can cross without skidding. Further, if clear thin ice is formed, then to melt it fast, the quick way is to sprinkle salt and ice becomes soft at that place. Salt works.
