We need them back 🚇 The mindset and reasoning back then was that trains could only be evaluated in isolation, rather than part of a holistic system. The patronage was decreased because car-dependent investments were making it harder to get to them -- yet without the trains, traffic is the only option, and that large amount of vehicles traffic costs a lot.
The time has come for The Australian Government to revolutionise rail cargo & passenger infrastructure. Just mandating cargo and private motor vehicle's is now tested for 21st- 22nd century. The Australian people cannot remain subservient to some other nations, eg US & UK. We must conquer our own large land mass protecting the environment both natural and developed.

Not if the present government attitude toward rail continues, sadly it will, so likely it will never happen.
