Gratitude! 🙏 -------- Yes, this is your rod! ONE Chinese manufacturer private labels this model and may be sold/branded under Amazon Sougayilang Piscifun AliExpress Alibaba Wish.com KastKing BlackHawk or generic Black Hawk. You'll need a cutting tool (ex: Dremel with metal cutoff discs), pliers, heat source (ex: lighter or propane torch), 4.5 cm / 1 5/8" dia (measured when flat) heat shrink rod grip tubing, qty 3 1-oz egg weights, spare baggie, and about 30 min. Let me know if this vid helped you out🤘
For those wondering which handle wrap diameter to order, the 30mm size on the link worked best for me. I would recommend "building up" the handle area above the foam handle so the shrink wrap grips the handle better. Hope this helps, went back and forth with Amazon several times to find the right size.
My Blackhawk was delivered yesterday, the action looks just right for my needs, will test her out first then consider the mods! (Modifications, not mods as in scooter riding mods!) Thanks for this tutorial Ish!
Just ordered one through the affiliate. I grabbed a Plusino a few months ago, I enjoy it. They are all basically the same rod. Why they bedazzle them Ill never know.Love your mods and they will work a lot better on the KastKing than the Plusino. Thanks for the video!
+Steve E thx for the feedback! i had one of those plussinos and imo the Blackhawk is much better. the reel seat is superior, the tubes more durable, and the guides feel beefier. you're right, they add unnecessary bling, so much so that i decided to cut it all off and share it with the world lol
Yes, it's indeed the spinning rod version of the KastKing Black Hawk. However, the baitcasting version of the KK Black Hawk is Black Hawk II, a completely different (and really nice) rod.
I did this to 3 teke rods and permanently fix to reel. So reel is non removal. Did this to my Berkley Lightning rod and Rapala rid to cover the cork. It works great. Not slippery and look a little classier. Use a stove oven to shrink it as my torch is out of gas
hello. I like the mods as I have three of these rods. one issue I see constantly is the telescopic sections get stuck open and I have trouble closing it. How do you deal with this? it seems wd-40 doesn't solve the problem as they continue to get stuck. thoughts? thank you.
hi, thx for stopping by. first off, don't spray it with WD40 lol, even though it's just mineral oil i think over time it'll get grimey and could make the carbon adhere to itself in the tubes. plus, the rod segments needs need to be perfectly dry so they can hold each other while extended, otherwise they'll spin out with every cast. this is what i do: after every surf session (i fish mostly salt), i leave it extended and walk back to my truck. i spray it down with water to knock the salt off (i always keep a cheap dollar store spray bottle in the truck to do a primary rinse on all salt gear). i give the butt end a few taps on the ground to knock off excess water, and, working from the bottom, i grip the largest rod segment in the the middle, and give a the butt end a good sharp tap onto the ground again, like i'm putting a garden stake into the ground. that tap should be enough to free the rod segment. i then work my way up the rod, being sure to retrieve excess line as i go segment by segment. works every time. when i get home, i'll unplug the bottom drain cap and give the whole reel/collapsed reel one more mist, and let everything air dry before i pack it away. seems tedious, but keeps everything in great condition for the next outing.
UGH, so I ended up ordered "35mm" shrink tubing for what I thought was supposed to be the pre-shrink diameter. Apparently, it seems 35mm is what the diameter is supposed to be after applying heat and shrinking... I did not realize this until trying to shrink on the 2" section. I was thinking that the initial size of the tubing was pretty large but just went ahead and tried applying it anyway. Not sure if the seller is going to offer recourse but it also wasn't clear from their description that this was the case. Is the "post-shrink" diameter these ebay sellers advertise an 'implied-known' or something?
Hmm, I remeasured the DIAMETER again not the width and it is 35mm. It still feels a bit loose though. I think 35mm is still too big. I should have gone with 30mm... shucks. I just reread your description: " 4.5 cm / 1 5/8" dia (measured when flat) " - dohhh! The one I got measures 5.5cm when flat. Of course, the seller didn't note any of this so I assumed it was 35mm flat.
Yea I think so! So it's 4.5cm/45mm when laid flat. If you still have any of the material left over could you measure the diameter (when you fold up like a circle) and see if it ends up being 30mm? I have a feeling it will be 30mm, which is how the vendor describes the measurement.
+L.I. Archer it held up ok till i dunked it. its inevitable. i put a handful of perch on it, and two leopards in the surf, dunked it on accident, ever since the spin is slowing. drag is ok, a little uneven after the dunk. the handle feels a little loose now, i see why now industry are going with screw-in, tougher design. prob ok for freshwater and light inshore, but the surf is beating it up.
Yeah, that's what I figured would happen. I saw another video where some guy bought a Chinese-made reel off of ebay for $6.00. He opened it up and found the gears were nylon/plastic, and the mainshaft was really cheap metal. I bought 2 Sougayilang reels that I put on my freshwater rods, so I guess they'll strictly be used for freshwater. I like what you did with putting the knob on the handle. If you ever decide to get rid of the reel, I'll take that handle/knob assembly off your hands. I can use it on one of my reels. LOL Thanks for the reply.
How did you build up the electrical tape so evenly when wrapping the gap? I've been trying to do it but every time the tape seems to build up in the very center causing two more 'gaps' to appear on each side of the tape.
Hello, good video, I was just looking for a low cost telescopic rod, I only have one question, can you use artificial lures of sinking 3/4 oz, with this rod? Greetings and thanks for your videos!
the featured reel is a kodiak 5000, featured rod is the 8'10" model. really, any 4000/5000 reel is a good match for this rod. great travel setup for light tackle surf.
+Cat Daddy Fishin thx, yeah the upgrades make a big difference, esp for surf casting. i just signed up to be an Amazon Associate, free for anyone i think. these yt vids are essentially free commercials for product, so Amazon gives users a way of recouping a bit of the effort that goes into producing content. personally, if a vid inspires me to buy something, i thank the RUclipsr by buying through their link (if they have one).
sure thing. the diameter's prob smaller on the 6', but i used a 4.5 cm / 1 5/8" dia (measured when flat) heat shrink for my setup, should work for yours.
What is your honest opinion of this rod. For example for surf fishing with plugs and lures. And how about bait fishing how does it rair? What is the rods specs length, power etc?
check out the companion review vid to this one, link in the description. basically it sucks for lures over 1 oz, but it's great for bait fishing if you're casting weights up to 3 oz. specs covered in that vid too.
Just subbed. Great channel & you're the bay area too! Also found you thru FISHERMEN'S LIFE. I've been thinking about this rod as I'm cramped for space where I live, and like to travel light when I'm out fishing. Have you considered what it would cost to make the exact same rod (with modifications) possibly in the 7 ft version? I can def do all these mods myself, but am kinda pressed for time (and space since I lost my studio where I do most of my builds). I'd be willing to pay. Lemme know! Keep the great content comin'
Andre Sibayan sup dude, thanks for finding me, hope i represent the bay right!👍 yup, i totally recommend this setup, been catching fish since this vid and its much more comfortable than stock. if you meet me at the mtf tourney 7/15 with materials, i can build it for you np, maybe trade you labor for some sabiki rigs? will go towards my 4 yo who's been losing mine at the Pacifica Pier lol 🤙
Great job ! Just watched it again, and I'm going to get one while I'm here in China at the moment, and do the same ! One question : Why did you feel the need for a counterweight, and how did you determine the actual weight ? (The rod seems so light towards the front). I plan to get the 11'8" model for beach surf casting.
thx. after a weekend of casting spoons over and over, my wrist fatigued. i noticed the short butt caused the imbalance, and added egg weights to center the balance on the foregrip. huge improvement! can cast now with much less fatigue.
Thanks a lot, I will check it with the 11' 8" rod, and put in appropriate weights ! So the weights should be pushed in deep towards just forward of the reel seat ?
btw, check out www.amazon.com/shop/ishwithfish, i list all of my favorite and tested/approved fishing gear there. reels, rods, line, if you ever need gear tips and personal recommendations, feel free to start there. i added this telescopic rod under the 'approved' list :). i update and add new reviews weekly. affiliate links, so any purchases there support the channel. thanks!
What size is the rod tip? Mine just arrived and I used it today with 43 grams popper, it's a Sougayilang 3.6 Meters Telescopic rod that looks exactly like that... The ceramic on the rod tip is plastic and is now broken, and I've only cast for an hour... The middle guide ring's metal fell off but I can just solder that... My big problem is the tip, if I buy a ceramic ring I doubt ifI can seat it on the frail metal, which also causes the line to fold on the tip... Anyway, can anybody please tell me what size is the ceramic ring, or the rod tip? Thanks...
That black on black tho. Looks clean dude. I just picked up one of these the other day. What did you use to help secure the reels in the reel seat? A piece of bike tubing or just some random piece of rubber you had lying around?
bigwoo yup, old bike tube. cool man, hope these mods help out. if kastking is listening, hopefully they consider this the beta version of the Blackhawk II.
Thanks! Yea, I saw several videos after and figured likely not :) BTW regarding crab snaring: if you had to choose between a heavy 10', 11' or 12' rod, which would you go with if you also didn't want lock yourself into a 'crabbing' only rod? I'm looking at getting an Okuma Longitude and initially ordered a 12' but may try to change to a 10' or 11' if it makes more sense...
i would go with a 11' penn prevail mh. it's just heavy enough for crab snaring and chunking baits for bigger game, but light enough to whip lures. plus i think it's on sale for 60 here and there, great value imo. i tried the 12' h longitude a couple times, omg that thing is a telephone pole lol.
Thanks! I ordered the 8'10 for surf fishing and travel (whenever that happens haha) and got it today. Cool rod! BTW: for the grip you linked, there's 40mm and 45mm but not 43mm. Would 45mm be too wide? And for the rubber 'shim' did you just use a small piece of the grip or something and cram it into the top portion of the reel seat? Any issues with the bag shifting around with the weight yet? I'm considering using a Shimano Sedona 2500 and 4000 with this and it feels a bit forward heavy with the 4000 + 3x 1oz sinkers still... unless those weren't 1oz hahaha. Also, how did you loosen the black bezel thing (not shown in your vids cause you probably removed it just before). Mine doesn't freely spin and appears glued in place. Just cut it off w/ the Dremel+pliers?
45mm is way too big I'm doing this now and 4.5cm was huge and couldn't shrink to the pole I'm about to reorder and kinda sucks because the shrink wrap is almost more money than the pole
They actually seem to have noticed these complaints too, since the newer ones no longer have the free spinning collar hook holder (they now have a smaller, less obtrusive decorative bit there though) and the first segment no longer has a line guide on it.
Hey Ish. I know this is old but I am looking into getting a telescopic rod for travel and I think you're mistaken that KastKing is the same as Sougayilang. Look at the number of guides on your Sougayilang vs KastKing. That's what makes KastKing a little better in my opinion.
@@ishwithfish Yeah. The Kastking Blackhawk 7 footer shows 7 guides and the Sougayilang 8'-9" you have 6, but 5 after you dremeled off one. Either way, everything comes from China even though the Kastking guys were from New York. Guess I prefer the extra guides. Wait...that's 10 bucks for 1 extra guide....dang! Hahaha!
@@ishwithfish Blackhawk 2 spinning and it goes up to an 8 footer with all having same 7+1 guides. The baitcaster has crazy 10! Rightfully so for baitcasting. 👍Hope you don't think I'm trying to prove a point or being a smart@$$. Just shopping around and saw your vid. Love the mods you did for the Sougayilang though! And you already know I'm a fan of yours hence I'm here yapping on your channel. Thanks!
I noticed that by sticking the weights (in a baggie) into the 'storage' compartment, it causes the first (or last?) telescoping section to extend out and be loose (when the plastic tip guard is on). Have you found a good way to secure that? Or even prevent it (by finding 1oz of weight that doesn't cause the telescoping portion to extend out)?
the 3 eggs do cause the bottom section to stick out a few inches, but as long as you have a reel mounted with line/clip/hook, the line keeps the sections from moving around when packed up. i can still mount the cap with the line and clip running through the guides and back down to the largest guide (which then acts like a hook keeper).
+Bill jhonson pretty much anything in west coast surf. have caught perch, stripers, leopards etc. this rod has very similar action/ strength to a ugly stik gx2.
thanks for the fast reply! you should come down to Santa Cruz/ Seacliff and try to catch some surf perch or striper. I see people at New Brighton state beach catch them all the time!
ooh naaah808 its not stiff. kinda like a mh salmon rod. if you want a fast action big backbone travel rod, you're gonna have to look at a 3 or 4 pc 150-200 rod. maybe st croix for ex, tsunami is cheaper option too. but, 30 bux or even less for almost 9' and tough, and fits in a backpack? great deal. thx btw for watching! hey i might be in Maui soon, hope i fish your waters right this time.
Ish With Fish the tica salmon steel head? i use that rod for nenues or rudder fish great bait. anyways good enough for 5lb jacks? i want a travel rod to keep in my truck on those jus incase days lol. brah i cant believe u guys get pole limit oahu no more we run 6 surf castin rods. if u ever come visit lmk take "fishermans life" with u. ill take u guys. haha
ooh naaah808 funny, i had a 9.5' tc2, returned it cause the butt was too long. i feel you, yup this is a good under-the-seat after work dunk rod lol. yeah it'll handle that fish np, it'll bounce a bit on fast running fish, but itll hold. 5 lb striper in heavy surf is my pb with mine. that'd be sick! matts might be Hawaiian lol, chill dude, he should set up a HI fishing tour, if I'm invited dayum hella down for sure!
Ish With Fish right on for the info. been utubing it for a while. i but i got like 15 rods. lol. xflock is a good addition we have that on our custom ulua rods. i will get me that one tho. do u guys have jack trevelly in cali? oh yeah ill def show u guys some spots north shore is good dunking. hit me up on ig i added u
ooh naaah808 cool, yeah for a little banger pack rod, its great. i heard trevallies push over here in El Nino years when the water is really warm, but you gotta ride for hours to get out to them. thx, saw you on ig, i followed up.
And the reason why you took off that gold ring is because why. Why did you cut it you should have left it and build up around that ring if you were going to just covered with shrink tubing and never use an open flame use a heat gun or a hair dryer
removed gold ring because the transition from reel seat alu to new foregrip is seamless. no step up to catch your fingers on. trust me, it's very comfortable now, exp during surf casting. open flame ok in open air conditions.
@@ishwithfish not because it's an open flame especially a torch that may slip out of your hand and cause a fire in the garage but you have more control with a heat gun then a open flame once you use a heat gun or a hair dryer you'll never go back to a Open Flame if you are in the field then an open flame works perfectly but otherwise in a controlled area at home heat gun or a hair dryer works best give it a try
hair dyers don't get hot enough (I tried), but heat guns do. propane flame is the easiest way. these blanks sell for $9 shipped on ebay, i've put 4" surfperch to 35lb rays on it before i broke it, hard to beat that value.

HI Ish. when you cut of the bottom guide, did you have to file down the points to the steel part that wraps the rod?
+Sharks4life 12 sup man, yup, absolutely. remove any burrs, ie any chance for line to nick or fray.
UGH, so I ended up ordered "35mm" shrink tubing for what I thought was supposed to be the pre-shrink diameter. ah, sorry man! yeah it's hit and miss with chinese vendors and their descriptions, hopefully i provided accurate info for my model.

How did you build up the electrical tape so evenly when wrapping the gap? I've been trying to do it but every time the tape seems to build up in the very center causing two more 'gaps' to appear on each side of the tape.
iirc, i filled the gap with strips of tape cut lengthwise to fit.
Would you recommend cutting off largest guide on a 10ft model? Will it improve line performance or not?
+Malique i would. the lowest guide on these longer models are too small, and removing it would allow the line to cast better.

What size diameter on the heat shrink ?
chaili89 4.3-4.5cm dia when flat (pre-shrunk) should be a good size.
45mm is way too big I'm doing this now and 4.5cm was huge and couldn't shrink to the pole I'm about to reorder and kinda sucks because the shrink wrap is almost more money than the pole
For anyone else out there trying to do this the rod is about one inch or 25mm in diameter with the foam on the butt so order close to that
Would 30mm be OK? Or better to go up to 35mm?
They actually seem to have noticed these complaints too, since the newer ones no longer have the free spinning collar hook holder (they now have a smaller, less obtrusive decorative bit there though) and the first segment no longer has a line guide on it.
where can i get the srink wrapping
Tj Brown i put an amazon link in the description, and eBay has them too 👍
Hey Ish. I know this is old but I am looking into getting a telescopic rod for travel and I think you're mistaken that KastKing is the same as Sougayilang. Look at the number of guides on your Sougayilang vs KastKing. That's what makes KastKing a little better in my opinion.
sup man, 99% sure they're the same. are you counting guides/ segments of the same rod lengths?
@@ishwithfish Yeah. The Kastking Blackhawk 7 footer shows 7 guides and the Sougayilang 8'-9" you have 6, but 5 after you dremeled off one. Either way, everything comes from China even though the Kastking guys were from New York. Guess I prefer the extra guides. Wait...that's 10 bucks for 1 extra guide....dang! Hahaha!
hmm are you looking at the blackhawk I or II? the newest version is a baitcaster rod with more segments.
Thanks!
@@Y-N0t all good😁 thx for your info
I noticed that by sticking the weights (in a baggie) into the 'storage' compartment, it causes the first (or last?) telescoping section to extend out and be loose (when the plastic tip guard is on). Have you found a good way to secure that? Or even prevent it (by finding 1oz of weight that doesn't cause the telescoping portion to extend out)?
the 3 eggs do cause the bottom section to stick out a few inches, but as long as you have a reel mounted with line/clip/hook, the line keeps the sections from moving around when packed up. i can still mount the cap with the line and clip running through the guides and back down to the largest guide (which then acts like a hook keeper).
what do you use this rod for
+Bill jhonson pretty much anything in west coast surf. have caught perch, stripers, leopards etc. this rod has very similar action/ strength to a ugly stik gx2.
thanks for the fast reply! you should come down to Santa Cruz/ Seacliff and try to catch some surf perch or striper. I see people at New Brighton state beach catch them all the time!
+Bill jhonson yup, I've fished there down through Salinas, productive spots with softer breaks than my local spots. wish i was closer 😊
Nice video
So instead of the Kastking I could have gotten the Sougayilang for cheaper? It’s the same exact rod? Dam!
hows stiff is it? been wanting to get the 9ft version but no stores on oahu carry it so i gotta ebay it. cool vids bah
ooh naaah808 its not stiff. kinda like a mh salmon rod. if you want a fast action big backbone travel rod, you're gonna have to look at a 3 or 4 pc 150-200 rod. maybe st croix for ex, tsunami is cheaper option too. but, 30 bux or even less for almost 9' and tough, and fits in a backpack? great deal.
thx btw for watching! hey i might be in Maui soon, hope i fish your waters right this time.
Great vid Ish. Was there enough shrink tubing left to do a second rod? I have 2 BlackHawk rods that I want to modify.
+e Guituan yup totally! i can easily do qty 2 8'10" rods with one 1 meter shrink tube.
I can’t understand what your saying over the music
my bad, ill turn it down next diy
That’s not a storage compartment in the butt of the rod. It’s for draining the water that gets in a telescoping rod😳
you forgot to give me a shout out like you said
Alex Vlogs haha, my dude, remember when i said it might take a while? i edit these vids weeks before they post.
A bit severe the naked flame use hot water or the mrs hairdrier good job it,s a shit rod.
hair dyers don't get hot enough (I tried), but heat guns do. propane flame is the easiest way. these blanks sell for $9 shipped on ebay, i've put 4" surfperch to 35lb rays on it before i broke it, hard to beat that value.
My Sougayilang looks identical to that.....thats kinda fucked up
it's the same blank👍
u fucked that rod up the carbon fiber was looking nice as hell
a hair dryer should be more effective
+jason douglas for sure. i thought i hit record, but i used a propane torch for a majority of the main grip too.
The 2 is better
you selling those custom rods lol jk
Pablo Escobar i was thinking of a giveaway, let the winner pick the grip color and I'll make it, whatcha think? good idea?
Everything likes giveaways
Uh, that is a *great* idea. You should team up with Jun and offer a custom grip as part of a prize for the July tournament.
dude, the tourney is so stacked with prizes, it's crazy. but, I'm knocking on 1k, a custom freebie iwf rod to celebrate would be fun.
Oh yeah I just noticed that! Congrats! Then yes, a sub giveaway would be a much better idea.
Kind off Rod cost 5 dollar at market new pfff
And that's how you RUIN a nice flashy colored rod. Lmfknao! Why not just buy a PLAIN black rod? Duuuuuw.
+Pit Dawg lmao bruh, function over form. im showing you how to cheaply upgrade a cheap travel rod, not how to make a cheap rod black.
Why would you even want to modify this silly "El Chepo" rod?
allan dee because you can turn this bargain travel rod into a decent everyday rod for less than $40. $20 if you know where to look.
