I was born in 1985, and the only reason I was aware of the term GenX was because Pepsi was so aggressive with their branding at the time.

Actual years vary depending on who you ask but you can generally say those born in 1940s-50s are Boomers, 60s-70s are Gen X, 80s-90s are Millennials and 2000s-2010s are Zoomers. It is usually a year or two later for each so whatever generation is after Zoomers shouldn't be 3+ years old quite yet. I think.
So when you call someone a Boomer you're claiming they're at least 80 years old.

Gen X is 1965-1980. If you're 60 by 2024, you're still a Boomer, though at the tail end of being a boomer.
Lost or Greatest - Silent - Boomers that sometimes split in two with conscripts in Vientam war are Jones generation - Gen X - Millenials - Zoomers - Gen Alpha.
Accordingly, that generation experienced till their 20th year: WW1 - WW2 - Hippies/Civil Rights - Fall of Berlin Wall - Millenium or 9/11 - proliferation of Internet and smartphones with COVID seems to be a defining current event for latest generation.
And next year, generation beta starts

For anyone actually curious, the breakdown is something like this:
Lost Generation (born between 1883 and 1900)
Greatest/G.I. Generation (between 1901 and 1927)
Silent Generation (between 1928 and 1945)
Baby Boomers (between 1946 and 1964)
Gen X (between 1965 and 1980)
Millennials/Gen Y (between 1981 and 1996)
Zoomers/Gen Z (between 1997 and 2012)
Gen Alpha (between 2013 and now, possibly still the current generation being born?)
It's also worth noting that the generational groups are primarily social in nature, and may not be applicable outside of Europe and North America.
That's definitely changed over the years, Gen Y and Millennials used to be considered different generations.
Like I'm a Millennial, but I don't think of myself as Gen Y.
Also they moved the Baby Boomers up a few years for some reason.
Like a generation is supposed to be every 15 years, starting from the Baby Boomers, which should be 1945(the end of the war)-1960(15 years later).
Which shifts Gen X back to 1961-1976, Gen Y would be 1977-1992, Millennials would be 1992-2007, which would mean we only just moved from Gen Z to Gen alpha in 2022.
I think they decided that 2012 was the end of the Zoomers and worked backwards; instead of starting from the end of WWII and working forwards like it used to be.
Well... most of the generational spans are around 15 years.
The Boomers are defined with that near 20 year span because of the Mid-20th century baby boom - hence *Baby* Boomers - where birthrates rapidly rose shortly after the end of the war, and remained relatively high even well into the 60s. So making it a hard 15 years would just... arbitrarily make the last 4 years of that baby boom not count just because it's been too long since the generation start.
And as a counter argument to "supposed to be every 15 years"... the G.I. Generation was even longer, being 26 years, not to mention the Lost Generation going back slightly further (17 years) as well.
While I understand why millennials/gen y starts from 1981, from my experience at work there's a further difference between 1981-1987 & 1988-1996. I'm in the later half of the millenials and I rarely feel like I'm on the same wavelength with the first half of the millenials when it comes to cultural stuff. I feel like we experienced the transition from analog to digital era differently because of our mental age. Imagine the early unfiltered internet through the eyes of a kid vs a teenager.
@@bdbgh This is 100% true, I'm an early millennial and in my mind there's no distinction between late millennials and zoomers, they're both strange, incomprehensible baby-like aliens to me.
I think it's because there was a huge generational shift in technology within society around then. It's around when we can truly say society transitioned into the digital age. Most of my childhood was in a distinctly analogue world, no Internet (or little baby useless Internet), little to no portable computing, a whole lot fewer computers for that matter. By the time the last millennials were growing up, the Internet, computers, smartphones etc. were all fairly ubiquitous.
You might also occasionally see the term "Echo Boomers", which refers to the children of the Baby Boomers: a surge in birth rate not because families were having more children on average (which was the case in the original Baby Boom), but because there were simply more couples starting families.

So for those playing the home game, and are still confused:
Boomers (aka Baby Boomers) are between 1946 and 1960-ish -> they're in their late 70s at the oldest
1960-ish to 1980-ish are Generation X -> late 40s to mid 60s
1980-ish to roughly 1995 are Generation Y (aka Millennials) -> very late 20s to early 40s
1995 to 2000 is a grey area between Gens Y and Z -> the compromise is 1990-1999 are "nineties kids" as a transitional generation
I'm not sure where Generation Z (aka zoomers) ends and Generation α begins - researchers use 1995-2010 for Zoomers, and 2010-today for alphas, and... that's not unreasonable, I guess. Basically if you're a teenager or older (but not yet 30) you're a zoomer

Baby boom refers to the explosion of kids being born after the Second World War ended. Soldiers returned home, people in Europe started rebuilding and got their jobs/income back, Marshall plan, Trans Atlantic economy boomed, etc. All these developments led to a lot of people getting children past 1945.

There was a Gen Y, but most of it overlapped with Millennials and most people thought that was a better name. Then they got uncreative again with Gen Z. But there was never a Gen W or proceeding. X was chosen because it signified the unknown. "What purpose will Generation X serve in a post-post-war world?" The X also ended up standing for eXistential crisis, because Gen X never did figure out its purpose.

I don't think kids these days ACTUALLY realize how old Baby Boomers are...they came from the Greatest Generation, which fought in WWII, then after them (I believe) was the Silent Generation, after that Gen X (my parents gen), after them came the Millennials or Gen Y (my gen), then Gen Z or Zoomers (my sisters gen), and now we have Gen Alpha (my niece gen).
This joke of calling people older than 25 boomers seems to have actually fucked up perception of time....Millennials are almost all middle aged now: 30+. Zoomers are in their early to mid twenties. The oldest Gen Alpha humans are 13-14.

X is after boomer, 60's to 80's, when people say "ok boomer" they're referring to boomers but also gen x. millennials are 80's and 90's because they're people of the new Millennium. they're also gen Y but the term millennials stuck harder. gen z aka zoomers are the 00's. it would seem as though that nickname is an antithesis of boomer, and the youngest generation any of the hololive talents would be. after zoomers it circles back around to gen alpha in the 10's.
The issue is that "boomer" is now colloquially used to refer to anyone older than yourself. That's what caused this confusion.

Whoever said X is 1964 was crazy. The earliest I have ever seen anyone place Gen X was 1965, since, typically, a generation is measured in 20 year cycles, not 25. Where it 25 and Boomers ended in 60, that would put the end of Gen X at 85 and the end of Millenials at 2010, which both are a little off, as the Zoomer generation wouldn't end until 2035, yet Gen Alpha is already here.
Boomer ended in 65, X in 85, Millennial in 05 and Zoomer were supposed to end next year, but there has been a LOT of young mothers in Millennials, which brought Gen A around sooner.
Then again, generation labels are also super arbitrary and started with "The Lost Generation" then "The Greatest Generation" which was then followed by The Baby *Boomers.* After that, the names got a little lazy until we got to The Millennial Generation.
Regardless, Generation Alpha shouldn't exist yet, but it does. I blame shitty Millennial and X parents.
Millennial's are from 1981/1982 as the whole point is that this would be the generation that became adults in the new millennium, hence the name Millennial
Generations are more 15 years spans now. It's not so much the people (age has going up for the average mother) but that culture progresses much more rapidly than in the early 1900s. Generations honestly probably should have slowed down back to 20 now but since they defined Gen X and Millenials as 15 years, increasing Gen Z's length for no discernible reason probably doesn't logistically fit.
Generations aren't strictly defined by years but also cultural, economic, or historical events. Like the start of Baby Boomers (the only gen official defined by the US gov) and the end/post of WWII or the end point of Millennials being if you were old enough to possibly remember 9/11, that typically being 96 or 97.
Yes, for example Japan has the Lost Generation, the kids who graduated in the decade after the economy bubble burst there in 1991 and who had trouble finding full time work as a result (made worse/compounded due to Japanese companies preferring to hire recent graduates, so when the economy recovered enough to hire people, the companies skipped the Lost Generation and hired younger people who'd just graduated)

Before the Boomers (or 'Baby Boomers', as they were first known) was the'Silent Generation' (having been traumatized by being born during or right after the Great Depression and keeping to themselves), and before that the 'Greatest Generation' (so-called that in the US because they 'won' WW2, not really thought as so in most other countries). Prior to that there was the 'Lost Generation' (scarred by the Great War of 1914-18 and having no sense of purpose). So I guess we can say Hope arose after in 60s indeed.

wich is pretty accurate for this last point since you can get a minium of 3 generation per century, the average would be around 4-5. so 20 to 25 years (....to get a kid since your birth).
No, you're completely wrong. Gen X is BETWEEN boomers & millennials, the children of early wave boomers, often stereotyped as 'latch-key' kids, they're the generation depicted in 80s teen movies ala the Breakfast Club.
And while marketing people use the classifications, often incompetently, they don't actually define them. They're defined by sociologists, based on perceived cultural shifts over time. Majority of generations are also defined time spans of 20 years or less... including the Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, & Zoomers. Other folks have posted the actual start/end dates for each generation in other comments... or you know you could look them up yourself instead of making up utter BS.
