What makes your channel unique is your ease in talking about the albums you love, and linking them with family memories, why you bought more of this than that, etc. Honestly, probably the last thing that will be left in your house before moving is a phone book. I think you're the type of person who could narrate the phone book, taking a few random pages and make an interesting 20-minute video out of it. If you are out of suggestions! Today, personal and touching video about albums and Life, which can be listened to like a story from a family friend.
I thought it was so funny when he came in with that record. He was so proud to find that for me. It's now a special memory. ❤️ Thank you and take care.
I have some albums in the collection because of nostalgia but I really like Mazzy's outlook that your records can be viewed as your personal library. If you have the room, keep all the records you can because you never know when you want to check out a certain album and you don't even need a library card.
For me, this is what record collecting is all about. Yes, discovering new music is great, but without the memories of sharing it with family and friends is empty. Muchas gracias!
I'm from Edinburgh, Scotland originally. The Proclaimers album title is pronounced "Leeth". Leith is a small part of Edinburgh to the Northeast of the city, and it's renowned for its many shops and restaurants. One of the best shops in Leith is a record and vintage book shop called Elvis Shakespeare. If you ever visit Edinburgh, you have to go there :)
Music plays so many roles in our lives: Friend, lover, teacher, family, partner, mate, doctor, counselor, teammate, dream, teddy bear. All of that can’t be so easily forgotten and discarded. No matter what the reasons you may have for keeping things with you throughout your days and daydreams, trust your heart and your imagination that they will always find a way to belong. ❤
The John Hughes soundtracks are all like that and it drives me nuts. There are so many great songs in his movies that don't make the albums, and they always leave you wanting. Good luck with the move. I know it's hard to leave someplace that you've lived your whole life, but I've lived in Florida and am there 3 or 4 times a year and know you will love it.
Sixteen Candles has amazing music in the movie. I don't understand why the soundtrack is so lame. Lol. We are on our way to see the new house now. I will miss Kentucky but I look forward to the new adventure. 🌴🌞 Thank you and have a great weekend.
I believe many of us have vinyl in our collection simply for the sake of nostalgia. The recorders don’t get a lot of play, but we just like knowing we have them.
I have some records because they are nostalgic. Hopefully, I will eventually want to go back and play them again to bring back some memories. ❤️ Thank you and take care.
Melinda one helpful tip I learned for when it does come time to “declutter” and you’re needing to part with things that still have sentimental value but you just can’t hold onto it any longer, take a picture of it, and make that picture what you keep of it.
After seeing that she won "Best new Artist" in Melody Maker in 1978, I grabbed *The Kick Inside* by Kate Bush from our campus FM station's record library & really enjoyed it. I read that her 2nd album came out a year later, but none of the big or small L.A. area record shops had it. After a month of looking, I typed up a request on KSUL-FM CSU Long Beach stationery promising to play it on my show, popped an international postage stamp on it & sent it to EMI. Next month I got a copy of *Lionheart* along with a nice letter saying the album would be available later in the year "on your side of the pond." (It was actually several *years* later.) Since I think *Lionheart* is one of Kate's weaker records, I rarely play it & our station is long gone but the LP & the letter are still in my collection.
As I prepare for moving, I'm pretty much living by the motto, "You can't keep everything." If I won't ever use it, then it needs to go to create space and reduce clutter. It can be easier said than done. People can get attached to things because it's part of an earlier part of their lives. I had this happen to me in a few instances. Then I get back to the motto. I can't get rid of everything I want to get rid of before I move, so it's a matter of whether or not it's worth keeping and moving to sell or donate later. Garage sales take too much time and effort without a good return. Most people want your stuff for nothing at garage sales these days. They can even get mean and insulting if you don't take their low ball offers on things. I like to tell them, "I'll give it away to charity before I sell it for that price." That usually works. I don't plan to get rid of any recordings before I move. I will decide later to keep them or sell them in ways other than a garage sale or they'll get passed on to my son. There are probably a few recordings that I'll hold on to for sentimental reasons, because they represent my childhood or other joyful or not so joyful times in my life. Not sure which ones yet, so I won't mention any here. That Liberace album is a very nice gift; Liberace was an excellent pianist despite his flamboyant shtick. 👍💖🎸😎
Best wishes on your move. I would love to know what state you are heading to if you feel comfortable sharing. I had a garage sale and the amount of people that switched the price tags was unbelievable. It was a lot of work and I cleared a lot of things out. I even sold a quilt that I had for 30 years but knew I was never going to use again. Decluttering feels good. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
@@MelindaMurphy We need to buy the next house and sell our current house, so you're way ahead of us. At this point, I don't want to jinx us by saying what state, but if and when we get there, I'll surely say. I can say that it's not Florida. I donated a bunch of stuff to charity yesterday. Yes, it feels good to declutter. We have more to do. Then we'll place a bunch of stuff in storage to help with some work we need to do inside the house and staging it for sale. Best wishes on your move and whatever you do as well. 👍💖🎸😎
I was in our equivalent of K-Mart with a girl I knew about 5 years ago (long after I sold all my vinyl). I was surprised to see a record section there and had a quick look. I pulled out that Ella and Louis record and mentioned "If I had a record player, I would buy this". She went back later and bought it for me. Just before she left, she gave it to me, I said to her "I guess I'm going to need a record player". So, now I have the AP pressing, but of course will never part with that record that started it all.
A very nice and touching vid Melinda! Here’s hoping you have a BIG new music room in Florida. Looking forward to seeing it in the months to come. Time to pull out my Culture Club LP. It’s been while.
For my Mom, it was Elvis. She had a record player that would allow you to stack records, play the first, drop the next on top, then play it and repeat the last one over and over. It was in a big radio/8 track/record player console will built in speakers. I still remember how happy she was the day she got that thing. She played Elvis records on repeat while I was growing up, so I developed a love for Elvis' music, too. I got all her records when she died. Nobody else even cared about them.
yeh my parents had the same kinda console waa marantz maybe 8 track.ttable had the stack but we just put on one record one of my records has a ad similar 69.70.maybe on the sleeve poor dad one wanted his records when we moved hs lena deano sammy jr elvis anontio beneddetto his neighbor queens went to school with his younger sister he probably gave them away to a friend wish still.had todsy buy yes console you could stack 5 or 6 records if you wanted i sae one vuntsge gear booth restored antique boith like 800 hundred maybe a thosand 8 track vinly and bluetooth options was reduced from.like 12 15 hundred
Nice memories! I have my grandma's TV records of Don Ho, Boxcar Willie and The Heart Touching Magic of Jim Nabors. These are definitely off my radar but could never part with them. The first record I ever bought with my own money was in the early 1980's and it was Hendrix In The West for $5...his version of Johnny B. Goode blew me away and started my love of Jimi. I remember going to the record store to find it and he didn't have it but a few weeks later he called and had one. I still remember my excitement going to get it! Anyway a few years ago I got another copy intending to upgrade. The 2nd one I got was better but I just could not part with my original. I sold the upgrade! You sure can get attached to these things can't you? Great video and take care!
Melinda, i know how much you like the Zombies. Rob Squad Reactions just had Colin Blunstone on live, explaining the history of the band, and enjoying " shes not there" live version. Trust me, youre gonna want to see this
While I was growing up my parents listened to Billy Vaughn records. I keep those records for the same reason you keep your Mantovani record. My Mom and Dad are gone now but it keeps my memories of them alive when listening to those old Billy Vaughn records.
Though I have 5000 albums in my collection, I don't have a single one that I "Don't listen to". I have some records I listen to more frequently and some I'm not listening to "right now". My rule has always been that I don't keep any album in my collection that I don't actually like. The frequency of how often I listen to each album means NOTHING to me because I have found over the years that I may not listen to a artist/album for 6 years, and then one day jump back into them like I'm hearing them for the first time. I hope the move goes smooth M!!
Thank you for the kind words. Moving is hard as you well know. I will finally have my own music room so I am very excited about that. ❤️ The way you explained this topic is so spot on. I have records I may not be playing "right now" but I plan and hope to play them all in the future. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
I have some albums where I only enjoy one or two songs. I know, it is a vinyl aficionado channel, but this is where streaming services playlists become useful. I pick the favorite song(s) from each vintage album, find it in Apple Music and create a playlist. Love playing favorite playlists at home, in the car, on a plane! Great video. Good luck with your move.
I totally understand. In fact, last week I reviewed a receiver. One of my favorite things about it was creating a playlist. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
I keep my records in the order that I got them, from 11 years old to 68 years old. Aside from classical, it shows how my taste has changed. Sometimes I think, "Why did I buy that album?" But I did. Incidentally, I lived in Kentucky for 24 years. Murray and Lexington. Good luck on your move..
That's an interesting way to keep your records. Our tastes do change over the years. I would have never dreamed O would ever be a jazz fan. 🤗❤️ We were just in Lexington last weekend. What a beautiful area. I will miss Kentucky. Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy The Blue Grass region. I never believed it was blue until I lived there. In the early morning, when the dew is still on the grass, it really does look blue. I have heard that the limestone in the soil has something to do with it, but I don't know.
Hi Melinda, congrats on your move to Florida. Being from Northern Canada, I'd love some warmer weather... lol.. I really liked this video and theme. I too like Culture Club and own most (maybe all) of their albums, but haven't really listened to them in quite some time. I always liked The War Song (cheezy to the max). Cheers. Darryl
I like a lot of their songs too. I think my guilty pleasure is I'll Tumble 4 U. 😀 I'm sorry for the late response. We have been cleaning up the new house. This is a long and exhausting process but will be well worth it. Thank you and take care.
Melinda, I can so relate. I can't let go of my Mom and Dad's records. My Mom loved JOhnny Mathis and Tom Jones and The 101 Strings The Soul Of Spain albums, My Dad loved Polkas and he had quite a few of them, and he liked Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard and Hank Snow. So those albums will never leave my collection. I am a big fan of Hank Snow too, because of my Dad but I can't bring myself to listen to any of them now, it is too early.... But I totally understand what your saying
Great stories, Melinda. I could listen to you talk all day. I can totally relate to your anecdotes about price stickers, people, places. I could tell so many stories of my own about records and CD's in my collection. Lifelong collectors like us know all too well this is something you cant get from streaming. Best of luck with the upcoming move, be well.
Great memories. I think all of us that grew up at that time, our experience was very similar. It's a shame that that doesn't seem to exist anymore- I think kids today are definitely missing out. thanks for sharing. Ya gotta love solid gold....I like years later it was the punchline on a Golden Girls episode.....Dorothy, who was wearing a flashy sequins shirt and very vibrant color says " I look like the mother of a Solid Gold dancer". Still cracks me up.
I'm so glad to grow up in the time that I did. I know that makes me old but I don't care. I need to see that episode of Golden Girls. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy It's the episode where she goes on a date with a collegue from work, who is actually a priest, and Dorothy ends up thinking (by way of Blanche) he is leaving the priesthood for her
I've got some K-Tel records from the 70s that my parents purchased---some are Christmas albums. I can't part with them because they remind me of my childhood. For the first time in about 50 years, I played them last Christmas. Lots of pops and crackles but I had so much fun doing it. Best of luck in your move! Safe travels.
Thank you for sharing, I think a lot of collectors totally get this! My collection is at the point where I would have to play 6 or 7 albums a day to get through all of them in a year, so I'm trying to be more conscientious about what I buy, what I keep, and what I can prune. I think like many of us, I can't part with anything that was a gift, or came from a friend or relative's collection. I have my late grandfather's Hank Williams box set, and I happen to love the music, but he played those albums so much that now they're in pretty rough shape. Sonically I have better options to hear most of the songs, but I'm still keeping that box set forever.
At a certain point, those older records go way beyond just a record to play. That Hank Williams box set must be very special. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
Hi merlinda great I have those culture club albums the uk 🇬🇧 version of the album kissing to be clever didn't have time clock of the heart....I have it on an Australian pressing....love the 80s music. 🙂
Hi Melinda. I hear you. As a former DJ, I have hundreds of albums in my collection that I'll never play, Lawrence Welk, Kenny G, Polka Hits, Perry Como, Gerardo, and yes, Liberace. I just can't seem to let them go.
Even though Don McLean is best known for American Pie, his 70's Dylan-esque hit with sing along chorus, his voice was spectacular...that version of Crying is great and has special memories for me.
Kissing to be clever, color by numbers, waking up with the house on fire, in shrink with the hypes, are three of my favorite albums to own physical copies of .
It's very cool to find records that still have the shrink wrap and hype stickers. I apologize for the late response. I am in the process of moving to a new state. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
@@MelindaMurphy Melinda don’t apologize please! I feel lucky to get a reply from you and it’s not expected! And this life move you are doing, believe it or not I have thought about that video many times since you uploaded that. I was so shocked to hear but wow, your daughter is so beyond lucky. Personally the only reason I live where I live is because my family is here, and I would never leave them and when I heard you were moving so that your daughter didn’t have to lose you, I was filled with joy. Good luck, so so so much good luck you! I really look forward to the era when you are settling in and making videos somewhere else and even the point where you get use to it! Can you believe that’s going to happen? Home is where the heart is, and I’m so glad you know this, and you’re able to leave the place you’ve always loved and enter such an exciting, frightening change! God Bless You And Your Family. Amen
Very nice video again! And yes Kacey Musgraves is fantastic! Try the other albums from her because they are also great! Deeper Well is the album than I listen the most this year! And go to a concert of her when you have a chance!
One way i try to look at my collection is: if i ever have a guest, friend or company come over and they want to listen to a certain song, i like to think of my collection as having a wide variety ( Abba to ZZ Top) and how cool it would be for me to have “the song” they wanted to hear, even if “that song” would be one i might never listen to. I hope that makes some sense.
I understand. When I have a friend over, I always ask what their favorite band is in hopes of having one of their albums so I can play it for them. ♥️🤗 Thank you and enjoy your weekend. 🤗♥️
Wow! A Flowers in the Dirt tour program. My parents went to see that show in Raleigh.it's crazy, my aunt just gave me a tiny flashlight she got that night last week. Thanks very much Melinda!!
Love the Flowers in the Dirt Tour program on your shelf. So many of us have great memories of seeing Paul McCartney for the first time. It was almost surreal.
I'm glad you recognized what that was. ❤️ It was a gift given to me from the channel Almost Human. He's so incredible in concert. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
I saw Paul twenty times in concert and I went to his home ar cavendish as he was home before a concert at earls court…but I didn t came in through the bathroom window
a neighbor sold me the world tour pack numbered tshirts cds poster family tree 6 postcards bumper sticker they had the jscket like 25 30 too small tourpack 10 no one wanted daid give me 5 my brother nephews saw show atlanta jacket i would have bought but too small
Wow Melinda, you are a veery courageous lady admitting you do have Culture Club albums 😂 And I agree so much, every album in the collection has a story to it and parting with old records is like throwing away photos from the childhood; not gonna happen! The story about the "Montevani" album and how it connects to your parents ..... WOW, I have tears in my eyes watching this Melinda 🥰 I am certainly not parting with any of my albums ..... even the Abba and Europe albums are not going away 🤣 I love your channel and stories a lot Melinda, you are at the top of my subscription list now 😎🤠
@@MelindaMurphy I forgot, good luck with the move to FL and remember sunglasses😎 Florida must be cool: I lived 2 years in South Australia and I loved those nice walks along the beaches in the warm evening sun .... I think these can be life-changing moments 😎
Hi Melinda 🌞 ! - There are certain records by my favorite bands like The Cure , The Cars & Yes that I might not play for several years but I like knowing they are available when I do want to spin. See Ya 😊
I have several records from the 70's that I listened to over and over back then and were a huge part of my teenage and early 20's years. I probably haven't listened to them in over thirty years, but I could never let them go. There are too many memories and emotions wrapped up in them. One is 'Mud Slide Slim' by James Taylor .... I spent the summer after graduating from high school (1974), working a job at the Oregon coast, living with my aunt and uncle for three months and driving home on weekends before starting college. I fell in love with a girl I worked that job with but we knew we were going in different directions when the summer was over. I listened to that album almost every evening during that time.
What an incredible memory. That must have been an incredible summer. It's so great that music can take us back to those special times. It was smart of you to keep those records. 😀♥️ Thank you and take care.
The original Valley Girl movie was wall to wall music. But, the first soundtrack release (vinyl) only had a handful of songs. Years later they released a CD with loads more. It was so popular they released a second CD.
Melinda: The 3 Ps almost made me pee, lol. Never heard that before. I have a bunch of older soundtracks on vinyl like Damn Yankees, The Music Man, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Oliver, Clockwork Orange, Hair, Some Like it Hot, Fiddler on the Roof and others, really don’t listen to them very often but won’t get rid of them. Great video.
It's like Marie Kondo saying that you keep the ones that bring you joy (I'm paraphrasing). I have records and books that have memories or remind me of positive stuff. Records can be very personal.
My mom gave me her Perry Como albums a year or two before she passed. I bought most of them for my mom as Christmas gifts when I was school age. I don’t listen to them besides Perry’s Christmas album. But I could never let go.
Hey Melinda. Wow, more coincidence? I too have that Culture Club Kissing to be Clever album and I don’t play mine either and also Can’t get rid of it! 😂 I’m sure it’s the nostalgia cuz I had it when it came out. But also… the Band was Really good and I always loved the Sound of the album. I also had Colour By Numbers when it came out, but I never really cared to buy it again, lol. Journey… “Who’s Cryin’ Now” was always my favorite Journey track too, next to Stone In Love 👍. Have a great day
Kissing to be Clever is the better album in my opinion. I just never think to play either of them. Lol. They were huge for a few years and then went away quickly. Stone In Love is such a great song too. We think alike. 😀 Thank you and take care.
Melinda, Good luck with your move to Florida. Records I don't listen to are in the basement . Records I listen to are in the corners of every room in the house. I need to listen to Eddie Money record in your vlog.
Melinda Thank you for the video. Why should you get rid of some albums from your collection. The albums you have selected obviously click memories in your mind. You may not play them that often but when you do memories are instantly triggered, and memories, especially good happy memories are always worth holding on to. I know myself that I won’t get rid of my albums, even those that I have 2 copies (in some cases I have 3 copies of). I hope the move continues to go well Melinda. 5ams care. Regards Dave.
Those K-Mart LPs were packed with A-Side 45s and brought to my attention many groups I would have missed like The Cars, Bow Wow Wow, Gary Numan, Elvis Costello and so many others - I don't play them often the pressings are bad really tightly squeezed microgrooves with hardly any bass response but back in the '80s I just didn't have great equipment so it was many times a real bargain - My Mom loved Motown - The Four Tops, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Martha and the Vandellas - My Dad loved Sinatra, Presley, Tony Bennett and he loved Eydie Gorme so once in a while those records get played and the memories flash by like miniature movies - Another great video Melinda❤Have a safe move to Florida!
My dad was a huge Elvis fan as well. ❤️ The old K-Tel compilation albums were a great way for us to have more music we liked on one LP. ❤️🤗 We got to know more artists this way. Thank you and take care.
Nice video Melinda! Some albums physically hold memories rather than the music on them! I bought an Ultravox album came home and my Dad passed suddenly I have never played that album! But I will never get rid of it! Wow that was tough! Good video to make us think Melinda! 😊
Hey Melinda, i know that you’re not making any or just a little $$ as a true vinyl lover but i think you could make some serious $$ as a shampoo model. 😉 Thanks for another video. A bit jealous for your braveness to move to FL. I always dreamed of emigrating to France or Spain but current health issues and being a sole parent for our 2 boys (16 and 18) after their mom passed 5 years ago has turned me into a scary 50 something. But anyways, taking the opportunity to wish you and your husband (and your daughter) a wonderful, fresh new start. Very happy for you! Watch it in that hot sun, it’ll easily damage your vinyl.
I'm so sorry for your loss but I admire you so much for taking care of your family. ❤️ I hope your health situation improves. Thank you for the kind compliment. ❤️🤗 Take care.
I just watched the movie "The Breakfast Club" last week and ironically I was going to watch Sixteen Candles this week. The 80's were a special time for me being a teen in the 80's and a kid in the 70's. I tend to hold on to memorabilia as well, and some have told me I am stuck in the 80's. I do own both a 1984 Camaro Z28 and 1984 Corvette and still listen to my cassettes as well as records. If you are curious, no I do not have a mullet, I have to draw the line somewhere. Always enjoy your videos that bring me back to my favorite 80's decade. Take care Melinda.
I have the same "problem) Even though I don't listen to some of them I will never get rid of any LP. I actually still have my very first LP which is Creedence Clearwater's Bayou Country. It is in great condition also! BTW, my wife and I escaped California about 4 years ago and moved to Central Florida. We love it here! Thanks for the video and good luck with your move!
Great video Melinda, as you well know, I am a huge Eddie Money fan, but that covers record is not one I would recommend to anyone, it's not very good. Wow! So glad you like the Kacey Musgraves records, I have been playing her stuff a lot lately the more I learn about her, the more I appreciate her talent, she just appeared on the Today show doing a cover of Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds" with Bob's grandson Skip, it's wonderful, every little thing, is gonna be alright. Thank you for listening, have a great week.
Thank you so much. I love the records. ❤️ She's got a great voice. The Eddie Money covers album isn't essential in any way but I love Eddie Money. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
Liked the story about your dad getting the Liberace for you That record should be special even though you’re probably not crazy about the music It’s the thought that’s best!!
This topic has come up for me also. It has to do with storage space! I don't listen to my Janet Jackson Control album. I liked it in the 80s. I think my music taste has changed since I am older. Then I think, this woman made history. 6 top ten singles on this record! It's a keeper! Seeing your Culture Club records made me smile. I love their singles, Miss Me Blind is so catchy! My Grandma liked Liberace. He's a guilty pleasure for me. I used to watch him play on TV when I was a kid. That guy can really play piano 🎹
Liberace is a legend. That was the last thing my dad gave me so I have to keep it. ❤️ I am with you on Janet Jackson. I don't listen to her records but my mood may change down the road so I will hang on to them. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
I have a CD of Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert I bought while with my (future) wife in San Francisco almost 30 years ago. Will hold onto it just for that memory alone :)
Somehow I ended up with my family’s Christmas with Chet Atkins. It’s playable but noisy. I wouldn’t really listen unless it was around Christmas anyways, and given the condition of the record I’d be more likely to just stream it but… there it is. It’s been with the family longer than I have. It’s sticking around.
Even though I had to sell most of my huge collection there is no way I could get rid of the 2 jazz records my grandpa played on. He was part of the Herb Drury Trio and duo. My grandpa, Jerry Cherry played upright bass and his friend Herb played piano. They were part of the St. Louis jazz community for over 50 years when grandpa died in 2003. I always had their other releases on CD but a couple years ago, not only did I find their vinyl 2 seperate times in a record store but they were signed!!!! I will always keep the records Jazz On The Right Track and Keep Your Sunny Side Up close to my heart.
My mum has around 300 tea-pots that are rare and valuable. Obviously she doesn't use them, they are in glass display cases. If she sold them the buyers would not use them. If I made a brew in one of them I'm fairly sure she would put me in the hospital lol. She still likes to point out that I have too many records and that lots of them are not going to be played. I just say they are my tea-pots lol.
An album I never play that closely ressembles the theme of your video is ABBA - Super Trouper. It belonged to my Mom and I remember her playing The Winner Takes It All over and over; I was 10 years old. I think I know all the words to On and On the track that follows which appealed to my 10 year old mind. I picked up Art Garfunkel - Watermark for a $1 years ago and don't play it much, but every once in a while I just need to hear the collaborative cover (What A) Wonderful World; just an amazing track with those additional vocals from James Taylor and Paul Simon. I also have an original VG+ (at least) ans cover NM of that Proclaimers record I bought on the cheap. Though I know they are Scottish (though I only just read that they are identical twins!), I always associated I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) with some of the rock clubs I'd go to and it always got played for St. Patrick Day festivities, so with my Irish heritage, I too tend to play it o St. Pat's along with a slew of other records / songs. As a regular watcher of your channel, this mention might take you aback but certainly not surprise you (and might make your husband smile), I have a fair amount of Bob Dylan and I NEVER play them; I just not a big fan. Most of mine are garage sale finds from long ago I just bought because it was Dylan or beat up $1 records from the last 10-12 years. I DO have a MoFi of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits that I got as a throw in on the cheap (pre-MoFi-gate) when I answered an ad for Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds - Live At Luther College 4LP, RSD release from 2017 for $50 CAD at the time...couldn't believe my luck..but back to Dylan. I even went to see him (Dylan) for the first time at some point in the last 20 years (on the tour that the Foo Fighters were opening for him); it cost me well over $100 for the ticket and it was TERRIBLE show...maybe my worst. I just mumbled through newer songs at his keyboard, never engaged with the audience and never once put on a guitar to play even one classic. The Foos short opening set was the only saving grace...but I had seen them before (their first tour in a small club even) and since and it was much better. If I could take back one concert experience, it would be that...yet, I still retain these Dylan records...perhaps because I know they are sought after and perhaps one day, I will be revisiting his legacy. Obviously, I caught the point and spirit of this video.
I love that ABBA song. That album would be a great reminder of your precious mom. ❤️ I don't play every Dylan album but I get the itch to listen to the different eras and it's nice to have them in the collection. Thank you and take care.❤️🤗
I had records in my rack I hadn’t played for over a decade and after much mulling it over I finally got rid. That said there are a few I could never ever let go.I keep approx the same number of records all the time , I buy some and sell some.
Love your personal memories. Another lovely post. And best wishes for the move. Envious how you guys can load up the car and drive to a completely new world.
True purging takes a cold ruthlessness, to be sure. You talk about your mother; I have some of my mother's records too, easy listening-type stuff: Roger Williams, Perry Como, The Boston Pops. Even when I was playing LPs regularly, I didn't pull them out much. If I HAD to get rid of them I could, but am not inclined to. My mother had some Mantovani LPs also, though not the one you showed. She always listened to WSIX in Nashville, an easy listening station; I picked up on that kind of music as a result, and I don't remember clearly whether the 101 Strings LP I have was purchased by me or by her (I think I bought it, but don't quote me). There may be one or two others of hers lurking in my LP rack; I wouldn't be surprised. I get where you're coming from with those records from your mother. Thanks for sharing your story.
As long as I have room for those records, I will keep them. I agree with you completely. They are so nice to have just in case I want to bring back some memories. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
Same thing here but also a bit different. If i love an artist or a band usually i buy double. One vinyl to play and one for collection. And that one stays unpacked. Also a CD so i can rip and transfer on my mobile audio device.
It's incredibly difficult for me to trade in old records. Even though I know I'm unlikely to play them, there is a story associated with each record. Like the Deep Purple record with "Kentucky Woman" on it that.I picked up purely by coincidence the day you and I accidentally bumped into each other at Phonoluxe. Good luck with the move!
love your passion for music & your records Melinda. You're right that even if you've never been through something, you can feel the affected by a song & that's something I've realized recently about particular songs I'm invested in that have a lot emotion in them. It was so nice to listen to your stories & memories attached to each record.
Thank you for the kind words. Being able to feel what someone is singing about is great songwriting and a great delivery from the artist. Don McClean truly moves me. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
In the '80s, I played in a cover band that did a few songs by The Culture Club...will say, the playing on those early albums was good. The songs were fun to play; Mikey Craig played with taste. IMO, "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" is a very nicely written, well-played, & arranged Pop song.
Although I use Spotify most of the time, I have begun to shop for music. My goal has been to find CD’s (not a vinyl guy) that I once had, but ended up selling. I have had some success, but I am finding that looking for used CD’s that are older are getting harder to find.
I have always wondered if finding CDs of old albums that came out during vinyl's heyday was more rare. They probably didn't make as many of the older albums on CD as they did the brand new releases. I have a modest but good CD collection. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
I would say one I’ve got but never play has got to be a platter remember when . It was my mum and it was played all time as I was growing up. I have bought a second copy of it online as well so I have two copies of it now.
It is hard and so nerve wracking. My records are currently in a trailer and it's a hot day. 🌞 I will be so glad when this is over. Thank you and take care.
Thank you Melinda for another heartfelt video. Just a joy to hear your stories. I guess we have all got music in our collection that we felt we should own. But we hardly ever play. One of the benefits of getting older, is that we can like what we like. Who cares what people think. Having moved 4 years ago. I know what it is like to box up a record/cd collection. It's hard work!! Good luck on the move. Thank you again for your videos.
Moving my records is going to be a huge pain and my husband will probably have the hardest part of picking them up. We are excited but also dreading the move. I agree. At this age, I like what I like. I'm not trying to impress anyone. Lol. Thank you and take care.
I collect vinyl too but i only have this experience with my cds. I have a Justin Bieber cd of the album that has Baby. Ill never listen to it but the memories are something i could never let go of as a kid
I have a lot of albums where, well....I only really like maybe one song....but I still play the whole thing anyway. Interestingly, I've been buying albums since 1982....but stopped buying around 1991 or so...and have just bought CD's since. I still pick up one or two a year though. Bottom line - I still play my old vinyl and I'm glad I didn't dump my collection of vinyl in the 90's....like so many others foolishly did.
This was given to me from a RUclips friend with the channel name Almost Human. He's a huge McCartney fan like me. I wish I had been to that tour. ❤️ Thank you and take care.
I grew up drawn to listening to music. My Dad was a radio disc jockey for a couple decades of my life growing up so that will always be a fond memory of mine. I’d use his records to make mix cassette tapes on his home stereo equipment. When he passed away in 2020, I inherited several hundred records he had for years and years, along with his old school stereo system, and will always treasure those. Culture Club was always one of my Moms absolute favorite groups, she just adored Boy George and it was always a fun mystery trying to figure out if he was a boy or a girl when they first appeared on the music scene. My mom passed away in 1998, but Culture Club always reminds me of her and listening to the radio with her in the car as a kid. Growing up in the 70’s and especially the 80’s was the absolute best and I wish often I could go back to that time period. Memories last a lifetime and I’m so thankful I have so many good ones to reminisce about often. Thank you for sharing some memories of yours and wish you all the best as you pack up and move to beautiful Florida.
I do remember looking at Boy George and not being sure. His skin was perfect. Lol. I know you would rather have your parents but it's so nice to have the music and the memories. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
Time (clock of the heart) great song. I have the first CC album KTBC I was 12 when that album came out I still have it and going to play it. Alabama was on Solid Gold too in the early 80's. I have The Breakfast Club and Pretty In Pink soundtracks out of the John Hughes films. I will have to check out 16 candles soundtrack for the Trilogy
Those parental memory albums are great. I only got into records this year, but early on I picked up the Willie Nelson duet album - Half Nelson. As a kid Dad would crank the record player over breakfast on the weekend quite loud, and the songs from this album always stood out. The only country album I have, and probably will - but good memories!
This is a perfect video to assemble a playlist from, named "Memory Lane." From the beginning when you were four all the way to the first song to be played in the new house, with many points of fond memories in between 😊
A few of the records that I'm glad are in my collection are the first Cars, Boston and Van Halen albums. I remember them from high school and they bring back memories of the time. The albums are all first pressings in NM condition. I get a sense of pride having old albums in killer condition.
don't feel bad melinda. I have stuff too that haven't listened too. like cds and Bluray movies. i listen whenever I have the time . great video as always beautiful melinda and I hope your moving goes smoothly 👍
I know a few of records that I don't play that much I just give 4 there so many I don't play much but I make it short of the 4 records I don't play much but at the same time don't want to get rid of them because of the amazing album covers 1. Staple singers- respect yourself 2. The 5th dimensions- star dancing 3. Commodores self titled and 4. The rolling stones goat head soup these are a few in my vinyl collections great video Melinda I'm definitely going to miss the vinyl collections in the background when yall moved take care and have a blessed Tuesday vinyl records forever
The song take me down was originally by exile. If you haven't heard it, you need to it's an awesome album. It's called.Don't leave me this way.I think that version is a lot better.
The records I don’t listen to fill in space and hold up my other records.
Lol. 😀
Wow! Thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate the encouragement. ❤️🤗 Take care.
The story of your father buying the Liberace record is touching. Thank you for reminding us of what really matters...
That is a great way of thinking about it. 😀❤️ Thank you and take care.
For me, this is what record collecting is all about. Yes, discovering new music is great, but without the memories of sharing it with family and friends is empty. Muchas gracias!
Thank you. I agree with you. Nothing can bring back memories the way music can. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. 🤗♥️
I would love to go there. Thank you for the information. ❤️🤗 Take care.
Beautifully said. I couldn't agree more. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
I have some that before and I agree, it is helpful. ❤️ Thank you.
Simply said, you're a great storyteller!
I appreciate it. ❤️🤗 Thank you very much.
That’s exactly what I said in 1982 when I started buying cds, luckily I kept all my vinyl.
You were very smart to keep your records.. ❤️😀 Thank you and take care.
Loved this video, Melinda! Enjoyed reminiscing with your journey! Some great albums in there! I have the same two Culture Club albums! 😉😄
I rarely play Culture Club but I love knowing they are there if I want to. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
That's such a wonderful memory
Kate Bush records are very popular now. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care
Wow! What a kind lady. ❤️ That's a great story. Thank you and take care.
Great video Melinda. I'm the same way. Just holding a certain album you like but might not play often can take you back to the good old days.
These records are like old friends. ❤️🤗 I can't let them go. Thank you and take care.
A very nice and touching vid Melinda!
Here’s hoping you have a BIG new music room in Florida. Looking forward to seeing it in the months to come.
Time to pull out my Culture Club LP. It’s been while.
I am so excited about having my very own music room. ❤️🤗
I hope you enjoy the Culture Club album. Thank you and take care.
What great memories. We had an old '67 Motorola console and we used to stack our records on ours too. ❤️ Thank you and take care.
yeh my parents had the same kinda console waa marantz maybe 8 track.ttable had the stack but we just put on one record one of my records has a ad similar 69.70.maybe on the sleeve poor dad one wanted his records when we moved hs lena deano sammy jr elvis anontio beneddetto his neighbor queens went to school with his younger sister he probably gave them away to a friend wish still.had todsy buy yes console you could stack 5 or 6 records if you wanted i sae one vuntsge gear booth restored antique boith like 800 hundred maybe a thosand 8 track vinly and bluetooth options was reduced from.like 12 15 hundred
That's awesome? I still remember the Don Ho and Slim Whitman commercials. 😀 Thank you and take care.
Melinda, i know how much you like the Zombies. Rob Squad Reactions just had Colin Blunstone on live, explaining the history of the band, and enjoying " shes not there" live version. Trust me, youre gonna want to see this
Oh wow! Very cool. 🤗❤️ Thank you for the heads up.
I like Kacey Musgraves. She sings on I Remember Everything. Thanks!
She's a very talented lady. ❤️ Thank you and take care.
While I was growing up my parents listened to Billy Vaughn records. I keep those records for the same reason you keep your Mantovani record. My Mom and Dad are gone now but it keeps my memories of them alive when listening to those old Billy Vaughn records.
billie last summet i found the boogie record my late dad had a few
Yes, the music and the actual albums can bring back wonderful memories. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
The way you explained this topic is so spot on.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope on time the music your parents lived will bring back memories and a smile on your face. Thank you and take care. ❤️
Thank you so much. Nearly every record has a memory. Take care. 🤗❤️
Emotional connections to the music and the people and places we associate with that music. That’s what it’s all about.
I agree. Thank you and take care
❤️🤗
Those records are treasures even with the pops and clicks. We just can't beat Christmas memories from our childhoods
🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
This is a great question.
Hi merlinda great I have those culture club albums the uk 🇬🇧 version of the album kissing to be clever didn't have time clock of the heart....I have it on an Australian pressing....love the 80s music. 🙂
I love the early 80's music too. ❤️ Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda.
I hear you. As a former DJ, I have hundreds of albums in my collection that I'll never play, Lawrence Welk, Kenny G, Polka Hits, Perry Como, Gerardo, and yes, Liberace.
I just can't seem to let them go.
If you have room for them, you should keep them. It is hard to let our records go. Thank you and take care. 😀❤️
Even though Don McLean is best known for American Pie, his 70's Dylan-esque hit with sing along chorus, his voice was spectacular...that version of Crying is great and has special memories for me.
It's a wonderful rendition of that song. It's heartbreaking. 💔 Thank you and take care.
I remember going to K-Mart & i purchased 331/3 albums for 3.33 $ 1969. My Mom loved K-Mart.
Thx for the Memories.
I miss those old prices. 😀 Thank you and have a great weekend..
Amen
Please keep on making videos Melinda, I absolutely love your awesome channel content and fond memories of times of your life
Wow! Thank you so much. I appreciate the encouragement. Take care. 🤗❤️
Another great video and I do have that Alabama album to lol.
I really like it. The memories make it even more special. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
Very nice video again! And yes Kacey Musgraves is fantastic! Try the other albums from her because they are also great! Deeper Well is the album than I listen the most this year! And go to a concert of her when you have a chance!
Definitely? She's awesome. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
It's so cool that you knew what that was. A friend gave that to me. It's so cool. I wish I had seen the show. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
Exactly. As a Gen X-er, that was the first opportunity that I had to see McCartney live. I saw him in Chicago for the Flowers in the Dirt tour.
Wow Melinda, you are a veery courageous lady admitting you do have Culture Club albums 😂
And I agree so much, every album in the collection has a story to it and parting with old records is like throwing away photos from the childhood; not gonna happen!
The story about the "Montevani" album and how it connects to your parents ..... WOW, I have tears in my eyes watching this Melinda 🥰
I am certainly not parting with any of my albums ..... even the Abba and Europe albums are not going away 🤣
I love your channel and stories a lot Melinda, you are at the top of my subscription list now 😎🤠
Yes, I can courageously admit I still have my Culture Club records. 😄 Thank you so much for the kind words. Take care.
@@MelindaMurphy I forgot, good luck with the move to FL and remember sunglasses😎
Florida must be cool: I lived 2 years in South Australia and I loved those nice walks along the beaches in the warm evening sun .... I think these can be life-changing moments 😎
Hi Melinda 🌞 ! - There are certain records by my favorite bands like The Cure , The Cars & Yes that I might not play for several years but I like knowing they are available when I do want to spin. See Ya 😊
Exactly. They are there when we want them. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
Oh wow! If only they would do that with Sixteen Candles. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
I understand. They are classic albums. ❤️🤗 I'm glad I could make you laugh. Thank you and take care.
What was the 3rd one?
@@ccpbass2032 Pole dancing….
It's like Marie Kondo saying that you keep the ones that bring you joy (I'm paraphrasing). I have records and books that have memories or remind me of positive stuff. Records can be very personal.
They sure are. That's what makes every record collection so unique. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day also my oldest sister birthday was last Thursday also my stomach feels better since last week ❤😊
I'm glad you are feeling better. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
My mom gave me her Perry Como albums a year or two before she passed. I bought most of them for my mom as Christmas gifts when I was school age. I don’t listen to them besides Perry’s Christmas album. But I could never let go.
I completely understand. I have a Perry Como Christmas album.🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
Safe move & protect those albums!!
Thank you very much. 🤗❤️
Thank you very much. This isn't the best Eddie Money album but I do love his voice. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
Some records are just too sentimental to let go of. ❤️🤗 Thank you very much. Take care.
The old K-Tel compilation albums were a great way for us to have more music we liked on one LP.
I'm so sorry for your loss. That must have been incredibly traumatic. Best wishes to you. Take care. ❤️🤗
Hey Melinda, i know that you’re not making any or just a little $$ as a true vinyl lover but i think you could make some serious $$ as a shampoo model. 😉
Thanks for another video.
Lol. I think your cars are very cool. Your friends are just jealous. 😄 Thank you and take care.
I'm so glad to hear you are enjoying Florida. I hope I will as well. 🤗❤️ I love Bayou Country. CCR is an amazing band. Thank you and take care.
Exactly. He was so excited to give it to me. 😀❤️ Thank you and take care.
That's awesome. My husband and I just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary. What a coincidence. Thank you and take care.
I've two Jim Reeves LPs. He was my Father's favourite artist. I don't like the music but I keep them for his memory.
Sweet! 🥰 It's a small way of honoring your dad'a memory. Thank you and take care.
I understand. I would hang on to it too. You could even use the album art to decorate the home for Christmas. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
Wow! I can't imagine the excitement you must have felt to find those records. Absolute treasures. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
Lol. You better not make that tea. You make an excellent point. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
I do a purge from time to time as well. I will always hang on to the most nostalgic ones. Thank you and take care.
❤️🤗
Love your personal memories. Another lovely post. And best wishes for the move. Envious how you guys can load up the car and drive to a completely new world.
Moving will be quite the adventure. 🤗❤️ Thank you very much.
don't play the Beatles much these days my dad got them new and will never get rid of them best of luck with the move
I understand. It would be hard to let go of Beatles records with a connection to your dad. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
Oh wow! That's a cool idea. You must have a lot of cool sealed records. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
Oh my gosh. I couldn’t agree more
That Culture Club albums are good, specially "Colour By Numbers".
The Liberace album, i bought it in 2020, it has some special memories to me too.
Both albums hold wonderful meaning for me as well. 🤗♥️ Thank you.
Wow! What a cool coincidence. ❤️🤗
love your passion for music & your records Melinda.
I agree with you. Kacey is great! I can’t stop listening to her new record
I know. Her albums are terrific. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
Willie Nelson was the first and second concert I ever went to as a kid.
That's very cool. I still haven't seen Willie in concert. I'm sure it's a good time. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
I love that song. It's my favorite from Culture Club. They were a good band back in the day. Thank you and have a great weekend. 🤗❤️
You, too. Hope you really like FLA!
It's nice to have a record that meant so much to your mom. ❤️ Thank you and take care.
I don’t envy you having to pack up your Vinyl collection and then unpack again it’s hard work 😓
It is hard and so nerve wracking.
I remember that song. It was a big hit when our daughter was young. I understand the nostalgia. ❤️ Thank you and have a great weekend.
You're very welcome 😃
I have a lot of albums where, well....I only really like maybe one song....but I still play the whole thing anyway. Interestingly, I've been buying albums since 1982....but stopped buying around 1991 or so...and have just bought CD's since. I still pick up one or two a year though. Bottom line - I still play my old vinyl and I'm glad I didn't dump my collection of vinyl in the 90's....like so many others foolishly did.
You were so smart to hang on to your records. So many people let them go and regret it now. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
I remember getting that free McCartney program on your shelf the first time I got to see him live in 1989. Awesome memories.
Oh wow! We must be the same age. 😀 I remember thinking Solid Gold was a good show back then. Lol. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
I just turned 54 on may 11th and saw my favorite band the Stones on that day. 🎂 🥳
Very cool. What a great record. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
This is a perfect video to assemble a playlist from, named "Memory Lane." From the beginning when you were four all the way to the first song to be played in the new house, with many points of fond memories in between 😊
That's a very cool idea. Thank you and take care. 😀❤️
Awesome video! Moving to Florida! Nice. I also live in Florida. So many awesome record stores we have. Happy Moving!
Thank you! I'm looking forward to checking out the record stores. 😀❤️ Thank you and take care.
A few of the records that I'm glad are in my collection are the first Cars, Boston and Van Halen albums. I remember them from high school and they bring back memories of the time. The albums are all first pressings in NM condition. I get a sense of pride having old albums in killer condition.
They are all incredible albums.
🔥 That's wonderful. Thank you and take care.
don't feel bad melinda. I have stuff too that haven't listened too. like cds and Bluray movies. i listen whenever I have the time . great video as always beautiful melinda
and I hope your moving goes smoothly 👍
Thank you very much. 🤗❤️
@@MelindaMurphy you're so welcome melinda
I know a few of records that I don't play that much I just give 4 there so many I don't play much but I make it short of the 4 records I don't play much but at the same time don't want to get rid of them because of the amazing album covers 1. Staple singers- respect yourself 2. The 5th dimensions- star dancing 3. Commodores self titled and 4. The rolling stones goat head soup these are a few in my vinyl collections great video Melinda I'm definitely going to miss the vinyl collections in the background when yall moved take care and have a blessed Tuesday vinyl records forever
The artwork would be a very good reason to hang on to an album. ❤️ Thank you and have a blessed day.
The song take me down was originally by exile. If you haven't heard it, you need to it's an awesome album. It's called.Don't leave me this way.I think that version is a lot better.
Oh wow? I didn't know that. My dad loves Exile. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
