I must be having this mutation. All my friends and family keeps telling me I need to sleep more, but I am energetic everyday with only 4-5 hours of sleep.
Finally! When everyone around me keeps on saying I need to sleep 7-8 hours, I simply can't do that. And I feel great with 5 hours. We're all different.
Finally! I am living for this video! I am a naturally short sleeper. I usually sleep two hours, wake up to pee, sleep another two, and then get up for the day. I have waited my whole life for this kind of research to happen. I have most of those other traits they mentioned too, specifically the higher pain threshold and better memory.
I used to sleep 6 hours when I was in high school,my parents had convinced me that 6 hours is at max what the body needs. Now,I sleep 3 hours,I can't sleep more. You can try power naps it really helps me when I feel like sleepy.
This is interesting because my dr’s have always looked at my ‘lack’ of sleeping as an issue. I am one of those people who short sleep. If I even try to sleep past six hours my body feels like its sick, it’s horrible. Most don’t understand how I can function, but this is just normal to me.

I am exactly like that 3 hours of sleep is enough but i usually sleep 3-5 except i wake up easily by noises, I even set personal best squat records in the gym with 1 hour of sleep and usually outperform everyone i know who sleeps 7 hours a day
I have always wondered why I only get EXACTLY 4 hours of sleep. I have all the traits described, ie. memory, multitasking, optimistic, intuitive, energetic (I run 9 miles a day) I’m in perfect physical health. I am in my 40’s but my energy level, libido and ability to learn and practice my knowledge is higher than men that are in my age range but sleep 8 hours a night. Im so thankful for this video because I am now interested in studying this more.
This is interesting. I notice that when I am strict with daily intermittent fasting, light cardio, and clean eating that I only need 5-6 hrs of sleep per night (meaning I wake naturally fully rested before the 6 hr mark). but outside that I need 8+ for sure, especially with poor eating and weight training.
The Russians did a major research project on short sleeper training for its soldiers during the war. Soldiers were trained to achieve rem sleep state in a short time allowing for a 4 hour sleep set as adequate.
I sleep 4 hours a night sometimes 6 any more and I feel like ive overslept usually 4-5. I have high functioning autism and I am good with computer programming and a technology enthusiast. I never ever drink caffeine not coffee not tea not energy drinks etc. Always wake up 4-6 usually up to 5 hours of sleep wide awake. Go jogging then read and such.
Does this mean I have the weird gene? Cuz when I get 5 hours I feel like amazing and wide awake and I don’t get it. But when I sleep more than that I just keep waking up and trying to force myself to sleep. And I feel awful after 5+ hours of sleep.
Impaired cognitive function and offset circadian rhythm. Try setting a consistent alarm and always go to bed at the same time. Get hours in addition to that and watch things improve around you. You won't feel smarter but you will be.
I sleep for 5:30 hours each night and it’s perfect for me, sometimes however I end up sleeping for 10-11 hours and it still feels fine. I’m definitely not a natural short sleeper but I’ve kinda trained my body to get adjusted to any amount of sleep without it affecting my mental and physical functioning.
I have been so relieved since I learned that my short sleeping is genetically based. Became aware of sleeping less in adolescence. I've always slept shorter than anyone I know. I believe that my dad was a 6 hour a night guy. Also, my mom was very sleep disordered and it runs in her side of the family for the females especially to be sleep disordered in terms of weird sleep habits. I've gone through most of my adult life with between 3 to 5 hours sleep per night. Hard for me to sleep past 3 hours unless I'm really exhausted. But I do try and get 5 hours, because I have been worried that less was going to kill me. Now I know, if I sleep four and a half hours or whatever then just go with the flow. I have an incredible memory which both my parents had, but my dad had a photographic memory, which I inherited. I'm a natural optimist, which pulls me out of the myriad reasons I have for depression and anxiety. I'm known for my excellent memory among my friends. Have exceptional autobiographical memory. Life has been rough so at least I got some kind of genetic lottery! Now I can really appreciate it. Now I know it's not going to kill me and that I'm not a complete freak! It is truly such a relief to know that I'm a natural short sleeper and that it's a thing! Hats off to the researchers who have found the genetic mutation which causes this unusual pattern! And hallelujah that I'm one of the lucky ones in this regard!
@@en2p187 got some additional validation when a first cousin of mine told me that she has the same sleep pattern and always has! Was refreshing to know someone else in the family has spent a lot of time awake when everybody else was sleeping!
My whole life I've been struggling to force myself to sleep because you always hear you need 6 to 8 hours, then after 2 hours of trying give up because im wide awake. I feel 100% with 4 to 5 hours of sleep and it's nice to know this information. Since I was a kid I layed in bed for hours cause I "should" be sleeping.
It's insane When i go for 6 or more i always feel exhausted and need more (sometimes i go up to 12 and still feel tired) But if i wake up after only 4 i'm fully charged for whatever reason. I just heard the pain threshold part! Now i'm sure i have "it" whatever this is.😳
I always told my mom that I felt good with 4-5hrs of sleep and if I slept 8 I would feel even more tired. I never understood why and thought there was something wrong with me. I’m glad I found this video
woww I didn't know this was normal, I've been short sleeping my whole life getting 4 hours sometimes getting 2-3 hours too. it's a really weird thing, I always feel fine when I get less sleep.
I just need 5 hours sleep, when i try to sleep again i only nap for 1 hour. I cant go into full sleep after i woke up. if i nap too much i'll get a headache. If i still feel sleepy after woke up, i just drink coffee and then i'll be fine
I have the DEC2 Gene and it was an honor to contribute to science by being part of a initial sleep study in my youth. There was a moment where my family didn't know if I had a brain tumor or something that was killing me, and I'm thankful that Neurology Researchers could give me and everyone who knows me, peace of mind.

I must be having this mutation. All my friends and family keeps telling me I need to sleep more, but I am energetic everyday with only 4-5 hours of sleep.
Me too!

🧢
Yeah, that better memory and higher pain threshold is a thing. I've been worried about a while if it was my brain, but it seems it's just this.
Students: "We are really tired, can you guys start later in the day?"
Schools:
4 hours is a little too low, but 5 hours is enough for me and I do actually feel awful if I sleep more than 7 hours.
I used to sleep 6 hours when I was in high school,my parents had convinced me that 6 hours is at max what the body needs. Now,I sleep 3 hours,I can't sleep more. You can try power naps it really helps me when I feel like sleepy.
How about 3?👀🤔
This is interesting because my dr’s have always looked at my ‘lack’ of sleeping as an issue. I am one of those people who short sleep. If I even try to sleep past six hours my body feels like its sick, it’s horrible. Most don’t understand how I can function, but this is just normal to me.
Same for me!! I had to for myself to sleep again today and now I feel so horrible. I had so mich energy waking up after 4h and my brain was so active.
This person has the power of living more time than most of us will, since she won’t be asleep as long as we do.
getting this recommended at 5am after not being able to go back to sleep

High school students: y'all are getting 4 hours of sleep?
I'm getting like 2
College students: you get sleep?
If you're gonna copy at least do it right

4. They do youtube for money and fame(just wanted to say that)

when I was exercising regularly I only needed 4-5 hours of sleep. now I'm a loaf and sleep 7-8
I sleep less and i haven't exercised and feel sooo tired
I dont think a 5 hour sleep is healthy in any way
Dude, no one asked
I’m anemic so maybe that’s why but I don’t even feel well rested after 8-9 hours, i feel good after 11/12 hours of sleep
Me too! It sucks 😩
I feel like I'm sleeping my life away
If u sleep 12 hours each day ur losing 13 years of your life. If u sleep for 4 hours ur gaining 13 years to ur life.
“I don’t really know what alarms sound like”
I definitely think I have this. If I sleep more than 6 hours I feel like death. I feel much better with around 5.
Katie same, and I’ve been like this my whole life
Nobody:
kids in 2019:
4hours sleep before school
Ayyyyy. I want to die
Lmao it’s more like 2-4 hours, and then on Fridays I collapse and sleep like 12-15 hours.
I feel like im both most nights i get 4-5 hours of sleep during the weekday and probs 6-8 on weekends
ahuh
And then hear them pop open those energy drinks when during the first class.

I knew a guy that only slept 2 hours a night, but his roommate said you could slap him and he wouldn’t wake up. He was in school full time, had a night shift job, went to the gym everyday. Someone should study his brain.
I am exactly like that 3 hours of sleep is enough but i usually sleep 3-5 except i wake up easily by noises,
I even set personal best squat records in the gym with 1 hour of sleep and usually outperform everyone i know who sleeps 7 hours a day
Wow!!
People with impaired cognitive function be like, "I totally survive off 5 hours of sleep and I feel fine."

Baldacci Agreeeeeeee
You probebly have it
You probably are waking up mid cycle thus having you wake up in a groggy state, 90 min intervals typically try waking up a half hour early or later
Baldacci I feel the exact same way when I get more than 4 hours of sleep
I sleep for 5:30 hours each night and it’s perfect for me, sometimes however I end up sleeping for 10-11 hours and it still feels fine. I’m definitely not a natural short sleeper but I’ve kinda trained my body to get adjusted to any amount of sleep without it affecting my mental and physical functioning.
Studies suggest it probably effects your mental and physical functioning
That is awesome.
I can function on 2-4 hours sleep but somedays I can sleep 12+ hours what does science say about that?
Keep a consistent sleep schedule I think that messes up your quality of sleep
I sleep 3-4 and I’m good, I do feel a little scared that it might have consequences on the long run
You really are,
The real deal!!
@@en2p187 got some additional validation when a first cousin of mine told me that she has the same sleep pattern and always has! Was refreshing to know someone else in the family has spent a lot of time awake when everybody else was sleeping!
I convincing myself really hard that im one of these people
Every student on earth: Aight, give me that power.
Question, do short sleepers sleep longer when extremely exhausted or feel unwell?
no
I still only sleep 4 to 5hrs regardless of being ill. I just take an hr power nap if needed. I'm also very rarely exhausted ever.
nah i have this im 1000% sure of it and even when im exhausted i sleep around 3 and a half to 4 hrs
usually tho i sleep for 3 hrs
Alright, thank you people for clearing that up for me
I just realized I've been making myself depressed trying to sleep 8 hours a night.
SAME HERE
7 to 8 hours of sleep not 6
I’ve never felt rested in my life.
How I do
Change your sleeping habits, find what works for you. You mby sleep too much. It's very individual.
Thanks I’m cured now
2019's mutant super power: short sleeping, no jet lag, higher pain tolerance. Where's the gene therapy? Sign me up!
I feel like this is me.
It's insane
When i go for 6 or more i always feel exhausted and need more (sometimes i go up to 12 and still feel tired)
But if i wake up after only 4 i'm fully charged for whatever reason.
I just heard the pain threshold part! Now i'm sure i have "it" whatever this is.😳
If I sleep 5rs: I'm tired
10 hrs: still tired
12 hrs: I vomit
Ploper Dung yeah u shouldn’t sleep for too long
I always told my mom that I felt good with 4-5hrs of sleep and if I slept 8 I would feel even more tired. I never understood why and thought there was something wrong with me. I’m glad I found this video
Sometimes that happens
Prof Xavier: What kind of powers do you have?
Me: I can sleep for 4 hours and felt amazing everyday.

Any short sleepers watching this video while everyone else is sleeping?
woww I didn't know this was normal, I've been short sleeping my whole life getting 4 hours sometimes getting 2-3 hours too. it's a really weird thing, I always feel fine when I get less sleep.
thats me,i need sleep around 2-3 am wake up 6-7 am all my life the more I sleep the more I am tired 4 hours are great for me
