  • In episode one of our video series Exceptional Humans, we crisscross the US, spending a day with Evans in Pennsylvania, and then following her to San Francisco, where she and her sister visited a lab so researchers could monitor their brains as they slept.
We get an inside view into cutting-edge research that’s challenging established wisdom on how much rest we all need, and see what it means for the future of a good night’s sleep.

I sleep for 4 to 5 hours, if I try to oversleep, I feel lazy and demotivated the whole day sometimes accompanied by headache and I don't take tea coffee or alcohol. But I am very happy this way

Whenever exam gets close I think I should be short-sleeper but after exam (in my free days that I rest and sleep too much) I dont' remember these things because of laziness . If we want to be studious in life we should give up our some desires such as resting too much .By the way I am medical student too and I will enter the exam 20 october and I came here :).

Hypersomnia exists too. If you're concerned about your sleep/you feel like you're wasting your life sleeping, it might be worth getting a sleep test done to see how much REM sleep you're getting.

I've been sleeping 5 to 6 hours a night for as long as I can remember. All while being a truck driver, and a heavy equipment operator. I've always been a high energy person and I never drink coffee or depend on energy drinks. I didn't realize it was a genetic condition, and after talking to my mom she says she's the same way. Very interesting!

It's not learned! It is strictly genetic. And, it took me a large portion of my life to learn that it's normal for me and not to worry about it. Being in a culture that tells you you need 8 hours every night or you're going to die young, gave me years of angst, as a natural short sleeper. Now I realize I might even live long! Longevity runs on my mom's side as do weird sleep patterns, and night owlish habits. And my dad was a short sleeper, early bird. I go between sleeping anywhere from 3 to 5 hours per night. Now I got to figure out how to join one of these studies if they want me.

Just found out that I have this .. Doctors have been trying to fix me for years .. CPAP machine .. you name it, only to find out that there is nothing wrong with me! I only sleep 3 to 4 hours. Sometimes it's a blessing and sometimes a curse. I ended up being pretty much a loaner because of it. Apparently I've had this since I was a kid .. my mom always pushed me into morning paper routes because I was up all the time. My friend was doing a sleep study because she thought she had insomnia .. and she does .. but I did the same test and the tech said 'Oh, your one of those" that started the discovery. Now I use it to my advantage .. I can sleep 4 hours and drive 12 and never get tired! 🤠

Wow! All this time I just thought I was weird! Nice to know that I'm exceptional! 6 hours is a long night of sleep for me. Between 3 to 5 hours of sleep per night is what I've done most of my adult life. Finding The Sweet Spot for me, is probably between 4 and 1/2 and 5 and 1/2 hours. And now I know I'm lucky. I used to think this s*** was going to kill me! LOL

I've always slept around 4-5 maybe 5.5 hours. I've only slept more than that on a handful of occasions and it always resulted in feeling groggy, tired and having a terrible pounding headache.
There were times in my life where I broke this sleep into short naps a couple times a day and that worked pretty well as well.
I rarely ever use an alarm. Sometimes I wake up too early and end up contemplating what should I do 😀.
My mom is the same she always goes to sleep at about midnight to 1 am and rises around 4.30 to 5 am without ever using an alarm.

I don't think with a pill we're going to be more productive. Short sleepers aren't productive because they wake up earlier. But because once they wake up, they start doing tasks. xD. We always want to invent a new pill for everything instead of changing our habits. LOL

In the past year I have needed less sleep. I have radically changed my diet to low carbohydrate and keep eating to a specific time window of say 8-9 hours. I have fully digested my last meal before bed and normally go to sleep around midnight. I always wake up after 6 hours, feeling wide awake and alert. I think my diet has improved the efficiency of my brain chemistry. I don't feel sleepy in the day. Why doesn't the research include epigenetics, perhaps ketone energy resources. Would be another interesting factor

I automatically wake up after 4h.
    I‘m depressed and stressed.
Today I also got up after 4h. I had so much energy, my brain intensely active. I was thirsty, so I got a cup of water. Then, I had to force me to sleep again. Woke up 4h later, so, I had 8h of sleep. And I feel so horrible, my brain and body feels so heavy.
I‘m totally sure I only need 4h of sleep. But people say it is because I‘m stressed. So why do I got that much energy after 4h?!
Now… when I think back as a kid. I had to get to bed around 8 o’clock. And got up around 12pm. I remember this well because a series that I used to watch as a kid started at 12pm. (bernd the bread was the show). Then I got annoyed because the epsiode repeated itself lol

My girlfriend is a short sleeper. Five hours is more than enough for her, she goes to bed at 1, and wakes up in the morning for work at 6. I on the other hand have a few sleeping disorders, so I don't even feel well rested after the normal 8 hours. I usually sleep about 12 hours. This means, my girlfriend has an extra 6 hours. You know what I could accomplish in 6 hours?!?

Several persons within my own family have, what we call "Short sleep syndrome". My mother sleeps 3-4 hours each night. I, myself sleep 5 hours each night on average and my younger brother sleeps 6 hours nightly. Each of us are highly successful and in my opinion, it is a benefit whereas most of our competitors are sleeping and whereas our known reputation is that we "Just don't sleep". In several aspects this has been a substantial benefit to our successes.
The negatives caused makes for several adjustments, For example: while living with persons who sleep 8 hours nightly as I go to sleep several hours after my wife but am awake before she wakes. I tend to leave the room or home so I do not disturb those who require more sleep. When completing physical exercise and diet programs there are many difficulties determining "What is normal for me".
I would be interested in helping with a study with hopes to understand my own self better and with hope to elevate additional aspects of my health.
It is difficult to exercise or diet properly when every basis for rest or sleep is set at 8 hours in which I physically cannot do.

It's okay to love your sleep! I sometimes surprise myself how little I need. And I like sleeping. Just only need so much. And I always wondered why were people complaining about jet lag? It never affected me. Enjoy your rest! We all need it just in varying amounts.
