Amistad is a great movie and it's too bad that it turned out to be just as non-commercial as Spielberg feared, given that hardly anybody even saw it when it came out. Whatever -- it's a classic, and nobody who sees it ever forgets it. It will endure.

Amistad, like all Spielberg-films, is superbly made, yet it suffers in dramatic terms from an anti-climax. The battle is won midways in court and then has to be fought again. Storywise that is a bit counter productive albeit historically correct maybe.

Roots, the TV miniseries, especially the first two episodes, REALLY captured the slave ship experience, and why the slaves often revolted. It was horrible Roots is a good precursor to Amistad in a double-feature.

I dont understand why people say Spielbergs first 'serious' film is The Colour Purple. The Sugarland Express was a serious film. Imo so was Jaws even though it was a thriller, its a slow paced Drama with great characters, and even though CEOTTK was si-fi it is serious. IMO all movies are to entertain whether they be drama or action! Critics are pretentious pricks.

Of course Barry Norman was Jewish too so no need for reticence on his part.
