I remember flipping through the channels when this was originally aired. I landed on FX right as this scene started. Never heard of this show, didn’t know about Louie. After this scene I was absolutely hooked. Such a ride! Great show, miss it.

I agree, Louie has a few bits about how we care about unimportant stuff *and* one about how people complain about stupid stuff when flying and how we should not take planes for granted. This bit definitely is about how stupid our day to day problems are, and how easily we forget them when real shit happens.
I don't see that message at all, because there is no superficial judgment here to begin with. Louis is discomforted by the fat guy's massive body, as we all would, but he doesn't direct any anger at him. The whole thing is a misdirection - we assume that we'll be treated to a bunch of fat man gags, but we aren't.

No deep meaning to it, no purgatory, no “maybe it was hell.” None of that nonsense. Just a magic island. Like Skull island or Themyscira. It’s annoying. But they do it because they’re sleep deprived and have to really focus on what they’re saying while thinking about all the other flight check stuff.
I have severe anxiety and flew on a plane today for the first time in years, and thinking of this scene and Louis' airport Cinnabon joke got me through it.

I had this exact same seating arrangement once on an 8-9 hour flight from Prague. Also, the Czech airline tends to hire ex-military jet fighter pilots, who aren't so gentle in how they handle the plane.
There's something enjoyable about watching him being able to take a sip from that tiny cup without actually draining it. Makes me think of Zootopia where the fox at the shrews' wedding used his tiny fork to cut off a tiny piece of the tiny slice of cake

Its interesting how Louis' show started out with all these well done hyperbolic non-sequiturs breaking up his stand up, then transitioned into extremely well done plot lines that spanned multiple episodes
For anyone who hasn't already seen it, I'd highly recommend watching Louis on a private plane with Ricky Gervais (it's on YT - Louis and Ricky fly to New York or something like that). When they hit turbulence you can see that Louis wasn't acting in this scene so much as reliving a personal experience!
