    A very nice review, i love games where they put elements that create the story WITH the player rather than LEAD one in a certain direction. A beauty of sandboxes. Had eyes on it too but never found time to play it.

    CDDA is smply how survival games should be. It's so deep, so rich in content. You create your own campaign stories in this game. I don't remember any other game being able to do this except maybe Dwarf Fortress.

      The real problem is in a 3d sandbox, you can only do so much, whereas in the current format for cdda, it's all just scripting. With 3d you have to model everything you intend to add and here we just need basic sprites, and the proper tags.

    subtitles very helpful, also having experience in both branches is great!
    I prefer bright nights, the devs of DDA can get very stubborn on their game direction; prioritizing difficulty, realism, and fun in that order.
    also the devs of many mods have moved to primarily develop for BN because the BN devs are very supportive of adding mechanics for them to develop upon. (cough arcana cough)

    • @tefnutofhoney2832

      As a former dda modder, now BN modder, yeah. The dda devs also havent done themselves any favors. Between being fairly rude and dismissive to modders, actively breaking mods every other update with no support, and their removal of lua.

    First of all, great review.
    As an aside: The best studying I've done is while drunk. Seriously, I have no idea why, but studying drunk the night before a test and then taking that test hungover the next day not only increased my comprehension of the topic permanently, but also lead to far better test scores. The brain likey, the liver probably not so much. I'd love to see a game with a studying mechanic factor that in because a lot of my friends were the same. IDK how many times I'd drop by my friend's place with a bag of booze, we'd get wasted, study, and then go in the next day totally hungover to the point of hardly being able to string together sentences and, boom, both aced it, and that friend actually had a learning disability (test frenzy).

    YO NICE, I saw you hint at Arcana mod. :D
    Smol side note, Arcana also has more NPC, mission, and plot stuff compared to Magiclysm. It also has a much higher focus on magic items over spells, but what spells it does have can be accessed via crafting instead of random drops.
    Also worth noting that Arcana does not come with the game, it's a third-party mod, I'm guessing from the massive mod list you used Kenan's of Goatgods' mod compilation.

    • @GnorriTV
      @GnorriTV  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, sorry, I was a bit dismissive of Arcana but it's a well made mod.
      The only thing I dislike is the summons, I feel like they should have a timer or something because the only thing that can defeat them is stairs and Z-level pathing in general, although I'm sure having an army of Lovecraftian horrors faithfully following you around is the whole point for a lot of people playing the mod.
      Essence in particular is something I like a lot, since it turns enemies from an obstacle to something you actually want to hunt down.

    • @chaosvolt
      @chaosvolt 3 года назад +4

      @@GnorriTV Summoned monsters, at least from the glyphs, are definitely one of the oldest parts of the mod and could use some tinkering with. Big issue with them is they use the same place monster action that manhacks and the like use, since it predates summoning spells. It has the advantage of letting me add a skill check that makes them spawn hostile if failed (while spells can only do always-friendly, always-hostile, or 50/50 odds of hostile spawns), but lack the ability to add a timer like with summons.
      I'm definitely tempted to either make them use the spellcasting action instead (so they can be timed), or rebalance them so they work better as permanent pets. Given a few of them can do stuff like serve as mounts or pull wagons, the latter seems more tempting.

    Recently started off as a tourist on a lighthouse island, possibly was sailed there as the cataclysm hit, he was bitten by one of the few zombies that dwelled there, he tried building a boat, but could only craft a wooden frame, there was no books for increasing his swimming or mechanics skills, so he could only attempt to eat healthy as his infection got worse and worse and he became a zombie in his sleep, good times... Randomly recommended this, great review. You sum up my thoughts on the game really well. It's really fun and great for making your own stories and goals, but there is a strong bit of tedium involved. It's kind of funny how quickly some starts can go from "desperate to survive" to "can survive indefinitely, so now I have to throw myself into danger again." I guess that's a good reason to include a win condition, like BN has, or to start up a new character. I'd like to see an addition, maybe through a mod, that generates a random set of goals for you to complete, just to help give some more direction (like explore X location, gather Y rare items, develop Z mutation.) Like quests, but less reliant on NPCs and more end-goal stuff.

    I agree with the point about getting bored after the first season - I've been playing for 8 or so years now and have a TERRIBLE problem of getting bored of a character around the first Summer or Autumn. Think I've only ever had 3 make it to the 2nd year (Currently with one midwinter of the 1st year) and one get to the 3rd year. By that point it really does just become an endless cycle of looting military bases and such. It's surprisingly easy to set get survivor armor and good weapons forged by the end of the first season if you know what you're doing. And .223/5.56 is definitely the most common round, I always have more of it than 9x19. It simply accumulates and I can never use it enough.

      The short version is:
      the bar on the right has various information about the character and location, it's also where the message log is and can be rearranged and customized.
      The rest is the game world, divided in 1x1 squared tiles, each having a floor type and possibly furniture, loot and enemies.
      The tiles themselves are either unexplored (black) not in view (dark gray) in view and illuminated (colors) or in view but in the dark (light gray).
      When the tiles are little squares of solid colors it means the current Z-level has none and it's displaying the ones below instead, mostly happens when standing on roofs.
