There's a wonderful story about Fields having dinner in a restairant and seeing a man treating his young son abusively at a nearby table. Fields was appallled; he called the child over to him and proceeded to entrhall him with sleight-of-hand magic tricks, brigning a few minutes of joy and wonder to the abused child's life. His "hatred" of children was actually a gimmick; although he usuually tried to hide it, he had a tender heart beneath all that curmudgeonly bluster.
When I was working, the boss took all of us out for lunch. The restaurant was named "Godfrey Danial's". Me coworkers started to wonder whether Godfrey Danial's was a real person. I explained to them that it was W.C.Fields' way of saying "God Damn" but getting around the censors.
This is absolutely amazing knowing the fact that WC Fields is my great great great grandfather. My father who sadly passed away back in April a couple of years ago was a spitting image of him as far as being hilariously funny like a comedian and with his facial features which in turn now explains why I can be funny at times and just be downright silly it's in my blood what can I say and I wouldn't change that for the world miss you Dad and rip to both dad and WC Fields
The scene in "You're Telling Me!" where he explains his failures to the princess and wonders how he will face his wife is as good a piece of acting as you will see - moving but totally without pathos.
Thank you for the documentary. I didn't know he only made one movie with Mae West. There would have been a great Duo together. And I didn't know the great actor Rod Steiger played him. Hi and we will get to catch that movie thanks again I got to say the audio was kind of difficult to listen to some of the words just couldn't be made out in the context of each sentence. I like your in-depth explanation about his anti-establishment antibank anti anything authoritarian I guess. I guess being a elementary school dropout I guess you don't trust a lot of things they get older.. thanks so much take care and stay well during this pandemic I hope we will get this soon.
YES, Richard! Now 76 and I remember seeing Fields, Marx Bros, and all the others at movie theaters in the Tampa FL area as a small child. They are more than funny; they are a comforting trip back in time.
There is not that many comments because not too many people are educated in the realm of fine arts. It's a shame how the comedic minefield has changed. It is a shame that a lot of people today will never know what true genius and true talent there was in the past. it is a shame that if you want real entertainment real music you must go back to the past.
Gee, could the sound problem be that most of the clips were made when talking pictures first came out, the sound equipment wasn't the greatest, and that was the best they could do at the time and stay in budget??? Nah, let's bitch and moan that it doesn't sound like it was made in 2020.

Fields had a mustache costume, far more often than I’ve ever seen. At 22:00 it says he dumped the phony mustache when he made Max Sennett shorts in 1933. A good old fashion documentary with tinny voices. Thanks!
