Gould at his polyphonic best, playing the Goldberg Variations canons (with aria) 3, 6, 9 and so forth, every third variation a canon. Nice to hear in this unexpected sequence as well as the fresh, unusual interpretation, so different from his other recordings. Is there no end to this man's genius?

When you are comparing great musicians you cannot generalize. They must be compared work by work and even movement by movement. For example, Gould who I love is not convincing in the WTC. Much prefer Richter. Take all your favourite works and compare them by your favourite musicians. They will all thrill in certain works and disappoint in others. To interpret such masterpieces is so challenging that nobody can dominate the whole keyboard work of a composer like Bach.
I have been an avid admirer of Gould’s interpretations of Bach but much to my surprise I recently heard a Richter concert of the WTC (circa 1970s I believe) and would place it above Gould’s studio performance as well.
Well, you might say Gould is not convincing by which you mean not swaying you. You clearly want to hear something more, how shall i call it, pianistic with the multitude of inflections most pianists (and listeners)seem to prefer, as if the music needs an extra layer of 'feeling' on top of the music with the effect of usually taking something away from it..

The quodlibet is absolutely majestic. IMHO, the Goldberg variations should end with it. Repeating the aria detracts from the incredibleness of the sequence of variations, and the marvelous 30th variation, which is its magnificent apotheosis.

Love that Gould choose to play all the cannons in sequence. You gotta love Bach's rigorous ability to create such highly artistic cannons on all the scale degrees. That must've made him one hell of an improviser. Would be interesting to see what he could've done past the 9th interval or even on the accidentals.
