    Gould at his polyphonic best, playing the Goldberg Variations canons (with aria) 3, 6, 9 and so forth, every third variation a canon. Nice to hear in this unexpected sequence as well as the fresh, unusual interpretation, so different from his other recordings. Is there no end to this man's genius?

    When you are comparing great musicians you cannot generalize. They must be compared work by work and even movement by movement. For example, Gould who I love is not convincing in the WTC. Much prefer Richter. Take all your favourite works and compare them by your favourite musicians. They will all thrill in certain works and disappoint in others. To interpret such masterpieces is so challenging that nobody can dominate the whole keyboard work of a composer like Bach.

    • @darylnoble5711
      @darylnoble5711 2 года назад +1

      I have been an avid admirer of Gould’s interpretations of Bach but much to my surprise I recently heard a Richter concert of the WTC (circa 1970s I believe) and would place it above Gould’s studio performance as well.

    • @egoncorneliscallery9535
      @egoncorneliscallery9535 2 года назад

      Well, you might say Gould is not convincing by which you mean not swaying you. You clearly want to hear something more, how shall i call it, pianistic with the multitude of inflections most pianists (and listeners)seem to prefer, as if the music needs an extra layer of 'feeling' on top of the music with the effect of usually taking something away from it..

    Like Samson and his hair, Gould gained his supernatural ability from his mystical chair! Crafted from wood found on the upper slopes of Mt. Olympus! Touched by the hands of Orpheus himself! LIke the hammer of Thor, the chair would fly any distance, break through any wall or obstacle at the raising of Gould's hand! Even now, the chair sits bolted to a museum floor, to prevent it flying to rest upon Glenn Gould's grave!

      The quodlibet is absolutely majestic. IMHO, the Goldberg variations should end with it. Repeating the aria detracts from the incredibleness of the sequence of variations, and the marvelous 30th variation, which is its magnificent apotheosis.

    Great recording! What is so great about his playing was the cohesiveness coupled with the individual notes that seem to have their own separate identity.
    Others interpret Bach their way. I feel Gould is almost not doing that. To me it is as close you can get to the music itself with the counterpoint so transparently on display. It is the opposite of clinical, an accusation people have thrown at him.
    They are not listening. I feel Gould is not getting in the way of the music or less than others anyway. It is the same with his Beethoven works.
    This will stay fresh, exciting and deeply moving forever..

    I guess you could call them...
    "The Gouldberg Variations."
    Yes, I know where the backdoor is.

    Glenn Gould said that he would stop playing piano when he was 50. He had played everything he wanted then. And truly he did. Seems he knew what would happen...

      Yes, and even more fittingly, his last recording was of the Goldbergs, reflecting, perhaps, the Aria da capo in the Variations.

    • @Pogouldangeliwitz
      @Pogouldangeliwitz Год назад

      His last recording wasn't the Goldberg Variations. That's an urban myth. The last piece he recorded was Strauss'early sonata.

      It's pure mythology the independence of the fingers !!!! No human, pianists or not, has independent fingers ...
      It's not because the fingers do not do the same movement that they are independent.... It's the BRAIN that controls, nothing else !

    c'mon people, this is just beautiful gould playing beautiful bach at the most human level; why do you need god. this is proof you don't.

    • @JcFiscus42
      @JcFiscus42 4 года назад +2

      Dimitri Moliavko-Visotzky I don’t understand how you listen to this and derive the conclusion that God is unnecessary. I’m sure you’re being hyperbolic, but the concept of God deserves a bit more credit than that honestly. This music/performance is surely among the greatest, but that would be a meaningless statement if there were no reference point of meaning coming from God. Gould is an extraordinary pianist, but he is not the source of meaning for all our lives lol.

      Without God, there would be no Bach. Bach was channeling God in everything he wrote. Well, maybe not everything (quodlibet?)

    • @dimitrimoliavko-visotzky381
      @dimitrimoliavko-visotzky381 4 года назад +1

      respectfully, maybe you need to be reminded that Bach needed to write music in order to earn a living

    Ahh yes the iconic Glenn with his chair.
    "He had to sit exactly 14 inches above the floor, and would play concerts only with the chair his father had made. He used this chair even when the seat was completely worn. His chair is so closely identified with him that it is shown in a place of honour in a glass case at the National Library of Canada."
    To those who has the honor of being in his presence and catching the sight and sounds of him singing along were truly blessed.
    The sad side to Glenn was he has so much anxiety, and constant self-medication was unfortunately his downfall from suffering a stroke two days after he turned 50. May he rest in peace.
