  • I've been spending a lot of time on the rail covers - the stuff that sits atop the doors and lines the cockpit. While I've taken a part almost all the pieces, I'll use this entry to talk about the rear piece, the bow that holds the side cover pouch on.
I knew from the get-go that a piece was broken off, and that I'd have some repairs to do. When pulling off the old covering and piping, I think I also broke off more pieces, or at least stressed some already dry-rotted pieces enough to cause the damage.
So instead of buying another, new piece, I repaired what I had with wood glue and reinforcing bits made from fiber-impregnated fiberglass resin. I used this stuff during body work and it it STRONG. It has a little bit of "give," so is flexible to an extent. I also used it to fill in stuff that I took out of the wood - other dry rot and damaged areas. I'm not awfully concerned with lateral stability of the thing, as it'll be no-kidding bolted to the car.
The upholstery and piping are now on and I really like how it turned out. I'm disappointed by the sidecurtain pouch though - I got this from Sports and Classic in Connecticut USA, and though it's made well, there are no fasteners to keep the pouch flap down, nor are there anything that holds the sides to the car. Compare this one to the one that I took out of the car - the old one had lift-dot fasteners at the top corners, whereas the new one doesn't.
