thank you for posting this,, i had the same problem , the only thing i missed was the small washer that held the bering. other than that everything went very smooth .. thanks again
Great Video! I have this exact MTD model and no manual (my Father-In-Law) gave it to me 15 years ago RIP dad. Its been a good machine, not as powerful as my old BobCat which I gave to my son LOL... but its a nice machine and I love the electric start. Got it apart in the garage yesterday, apparently the nut holding the friction disc/pulley came off the other night and is probably buried in the snow outside. Picked up a new 3/8-24 locking nut and grade 8 washer, and in the service position I saw the friction wheel rubber was cracked, so ordered one from Amazon, it should be here tomorrow. This video is about the best thing I could see right now and I should have that puppy up and running by Christmas!
Great video! I am not very skilled in "turning wrenches" but your video, coupled with your detailed explanation, made this repair easy for me and saved me a lot of money. Thanks for taking the time to make your videos!!
Yes, Ariens has a nicely manufactured machine. I'm in the process of figuring out how to make a garden hose hose / air hose fitting crimper, but I have been unsuccessful, just thinking that may be a video up your alley?
thanks bob ... i just did mine the rubber disc that is .. i have a gas leak now in carb tried all except rebuild so got a new one on the way hope it helps .. have a good weekend .. †
I am looking forward to see it. Every job and machine is a bit different, even if it is the same machine. With snowblowers you always run into things not going smoothly.
thank you for the video. I'm trying to restart the bolt holding the 2 big auger pullies back in. No luck, if I do what you just did, I have direct access to the bolt. if it can be started, that should do the job. Thanks again
That Milwaukee impact wrench has been dubbed The Miracle Worker. I had an MTD 640F a U.S. built mid 90's machine served me well for nearly 20 years with proper maintenance sold it on Craigslist, replaced it with an Ariens Platinum, now it hardly snows here.
Good repair - but your customers MTD machine is missing the small spring that goes from the aluminum friction disk assembly to the side frame of the machine. It is supposed to be in the lower right side. This spring retracts the disk away from the rubber disk / wheel so you can easily move the machine around when the engine is not running. Otherwise it will contact the aluminum plate. A common thing I see break off on these MTD style machines.
Nice job. If the friction disc is not to bad off you may be able to resurface it with a sander and save some $. Also I'd recommend you only use impact sockets on impact wrenches for safety.
doublewide6 Repairs LLC I got a set of standard SAE and the Pro line Metric at Harbor freight. They are both good so far. The Pro line are a bit nicer, nice finish, if you use them alot.
What would happen if you replaced the friction-wheel rubber but kept the same pulley/disc (maybe after polishing it up)? Maybe take it to the auto parts store and they could smooth up the surface on their brake-disc lathe?
Just changed rubber on friction wheel and it all looked OK but still doesn't drive right. Acts like it isn't geting good friction contact. we also change the 3 belts.???
You should never run your rubber wheel so far down that there is metal on metal. if you change the rubber in time, your smooth metal wheel will last forever. Also you need to grease that shaft that the speed adjuster slides on so it shifts easier and doesn't wear out. Also the bushings in the axle need constant greasing or they will wear out.
I thought the same, then I was thinking maybe it was reversed threaded. I have never found a nut that that that thing would not break loose or break off.

Excellent because snow blowers are similar in their drive systems this is a very educational video.

Thanks Dan. I'm happy to hear you got your repair done. Nice Job! Thanks for the positive comment. Bob
Nicely done. I like the Ariens style that you don't have the remove that shaft and the friction disc just bolts on in 5 minutes.

Thanks D-wide6. Very helpful.
Happy you liked it!
Very good video. A bit complicated but very good fix. Thanks for the video and information. Great job.
No problem, thanks for taking the time to comment. Bob

New aftermarket carb for $15 will get you good as new. Plus, the aftermarket carbs a adjustable for down the road.
@@@doublewide6 ... just hope i got the right one lol .. †
You make it look so easy great job
I just did one with the replaceable rubber wheel but haven't published it. You beat me to it. LOL. Maybe I will wait a bit now. January??
@Fill's Lawn Care Coming soon to a computer near you LOL
I am looking forward to see it. Every job and machine is a bit different, even if it is the same machine. With snowblowers you always run into things not going smoothly.
Good JOb Bob those drive systems remind of the drive systems on the snapper mowers we had growing up. Have a great weekend!!!
They are about the same. Those snapper drives are strong and dependable. On snowblowers these drive systems get wet and slip.
thank you for the video. I'm trying to restart the bolt holding the 2 big auger pullies back in. No luck, if I do what you just did, I have direct access to the bolt. if it can be started, that should do the job. Thanks again
Great video!!! Gonna try it this week! Thanks so much!
Good fix Bob.
Love the Taryl shirt. There's your dinner.
Bob loved the vid you did with Taryl Mustie and Steve.
well done; excellent video!

Yes, isn't that just how it goes.
Nice job. Mines still good and original from 1985.
I was surprised on this one, The machine has a ton of wear. Maybe the owner has big hills? Not sure.

There most be thousands of these across north America .Good video .
Thanks Chris, for sure. I see these snowblowers all over the place.
Millions of snowblowers of many brands use basically the same drive arrangement. Riding mowers too.
Another great one my Friend! Hugs to the little man. Zip~
Thanks Zip. Have a good weekend. Hopefully, it doesn't get too cold down there.
Would you have a video on removing wheel axle on cub cadet 524 swe?
Nice video man...
Thanks!
Nice job. If the friction disc is not to bad off you may be able to resurface it with a sander and save some $. Also I'd recommend you only use impact sockets on impact wrenches for safety.
Good tips. I don't have a full set of impact sockets (I should). That plate was done.

I have a large O ring on those bearings holding the shaft in. Do I need to remove the O ring or just knock the bearing out from the inside?
What would happen if you replaced the friction-wheel rubber but kept the same pulley/disc (maybe after polishing it up)? Maybe take it to the auto parts store and they could smooth up the surface on their brake-disc lathe?
say no worries about oil leaking with unit turned over like that?
Just changed rubber on friction wheel and it all looked OK but still doesn't drive right. Acts like it isn't geting good friction contact. we also change the 3 belts.???
Does the drive-clutch cable have too much slack?
Cool looking wristwatch, what kind is it?
Casio from Amazon, I like it. I have had it about 3 years now. On the second wrist band though.

👍👍
For a second there, I thought the big 1/2 fuel snapped the bolt off.... But great job, not a fun job.

@ 1:51 I think I'll bring you guys over to this side and show you my bald spot. 😂😂
