    Great Video! I have this exact MTD model and no manual (my Father-In-Law) gave it to me 15 years ago RIP dad. Its been a good machine, not as powerful as my old BobCat which I gave to my son LOL... but its a nice machine and I love the electric start. Got it apart in the garage yesterday, apparently the nut holding the friction disc/pulley came off the other night and is probably buried in the snow outside. Picked up a new 3/8-24 locking nut and grade 8 washer, and in the service position I saw the friction wheel rubber was cracked, so ordered one from Amazon, it should be here tomorrow. This video is about the best thing I could see right now and I should have that puppy up and running by Christmas!

    Excellent because snow blowers are similar in their drive systems this is a very educational video.

    Great video! I am not very skilled in "turning wrenches" but your video, coupled with your detailed explanation, made this repair easy for me and saved me a lot of money. Thanks for taking the time to make your videos!!

    Nicely done. I like the Ariens style that you don't have the remove that shaft and the friction disc just bolts on in 5 minutes.

    • @doublewide6
      @doublewide6  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, Ariens has a nicely manufactured machine. I'm in the process of figuring out how to make a garden hose hose / air hose fitting crimper, but I have been unsuccessful, just thinking that may be a video up your alley?

      I am looking forward to see it. Every job and machine is a bit different, even if it is the same machine. With snowblowers you always run into things not going smoothly.

    Good JOb Bob those drive systems remind of the drive systems on the snapper mowers we had growing up. Have a great weekend!!!

    • @doublewide6
      @doublewide6  5 лет назад

      They are about the same. Those snapper drives are strong and dependable. On snowblowers these drive systems get wet and slip.

    thank you for the video. I'm trying to restart the bolt holding the 2 big auger pullies back in. No luck, if I do what you just did, I have direct access to the bolt. if it can be started, that should do the job. Thanks again

    That Milwaukee impact wrench has been dubbed The Miracle Worker. I had an MTD 640F a U.S. built mid 90's machine served me well for nearly 20 years with proper maintenance sold it on Craigslist, replaced it with an Ariens Platinum, now it hardly snows here.

      I was surprised on this one, The machine has a ton of wear. Maybe the owner has big hills? Not sure.

    Good repair - but your customers MTD machine is missing the small spring that goes from the aluminum friction disk assembly to the side frame of the machine. It is supposed to be in the lower right side. This spring retracts the disk away from the rubber disk / wheel so you can easily move the machine around when the engine is not running. Otherwise it will contact the aluminum plate. A common thing I see break off on these MTD style machines.

      Millions of snowblowers of many brands use basically the same drive arrangement. Riding mowers too.

    Nice job. If the friction disc is not to bad off you may be able to resurface it with a sander and save some $. Also I'd recommend you only use impact sockets on impact wrenches for safety.

    • @doublewide6
      @doublewide6  5 лет назад

      Good tips. I don't have a full set of impact sockets (I should). That plate was done.

      doublewide6 Repairs LLC I got a set of standard SAE and the Pro line Metric at Harbor freight. They are both good so far. The Pro line are a bit nicer, nice finish, if you use them alot.

    I have a large O ring on those bearings holding the shaft in. Do I need to remove the O ring or just knock the bearing out from the inside?

    What would happen if you replaced the friction-wheel rubber but kept the same pulley/disc (maybe after polishing it up)? Maybe take it to the auto parts store and they could smooth up the surface on their brake-disc lathe?

    You should never run your rubber wheel so far down that there is metal on metal. if you change the rubber in time, your smooth metal wheel will last forever.
    Also you need to grease that shaft that the speed adjuster slides on so it shifts easier and doesn't wear out. Also the bushings in the axle need constant greasing or they will wear out.

      I thought the same, then I was thinking maybe it was reversed threaded. I have never found a nut that that that thing would not break loose or break off.
