Me too, rumbled lol,,,come on,,,who wouldn't have had one of these and whipped out the toys and rewired it in a standard config,,,Gibson are so damaged !!
This may come as a surprise from someone who owns and loves vintage guitars amps, pedals and all that stuff, but I have a Firebird X, which I received as a "perk" in a trade, and...wait for it...I love it. Yes, it's very complicated and maybe more more suited to keyboard players who seem to like all kinds of switches, knobs and such, but after a fashion I learned how to use it and it's fab. The pickups are real Firebirds and sound amazing. The robo stuff is, well, kind of cool once you have a good handle on it. Altogether, as the guy said, it''s a first-class, high quality guitar which plays great. So call me names, but I'm keeping (and playing) it.
Wait until it stops working. Guaranteed for 1 year, and you didn't buy it new. Gibson nor Tronical has ANY parts for them. I ask $500 just to diagnose the problem, and up to $3000 to repair one. Unfortunately, that price is only going to go up. Tronical has a few parts. Gibson has ZERO parts.
An electrician once told me when I asked him about the difficulty in doing a complicated setup, "Just do one wire at a time and keep going." Good electrical advice and good life advice."
John DeF if they took that x off, and took the faders off the top of the guitar, and did away with all the over the top tech on this guitar, it would likely be a very nice playing guitar, like Trogly was saying.
If they can afford crushing hundreds of this.. they definitely can afford selling them at lower price in the first place.. this only mean they have no love for guitar and guitar making.. they just love the money..
Mohd Haziq Kahar you my friend are speaking the truth Gibson is by far the most Greedy Guitar Corporation in the world they do not care about the Music, Musicians or anything else.Do they care about the Money....Hell Yes that is ALL THAT GIBSON CARE'S ABOUT.Not under privileged kids not broke Ass musicians who can't afford an instrument I mean why would they want to Help a musicians who can't afford a GIBSON I have wanted a LP Goldtop for 30 years and I finally figured out that I will NEVER be able to buy one.So I bought an Epiphone LP GOLDTOP with p90s and it is absolutely awesome it is absolutely Perfect. So go Fuck your self Gibson (Hard up the Ass!!)oh yeah and have a great day 🙄
@@timmiller4205 epiphone makes awesome guitars at a fraction of the price.. their high end stuff goes toe to toe with gibson's.. and still costs less.. 😅
Possibly not. They can write off all those destroyed guitars as a total loss. The tax cuts might save them more than selling them at a discounted price. My guess is that they really didn't make any money on them at the MSRP.
Darrin Hillier that is Exactly what happened. They made an insurance claim on them and the insurance company destroy them. They were all messed up and dangerous I think they were electrocuting people
Actually kind of dig the look of the guitar, but the electronics are a major FAIL. Worst part is the gear shift, at least if someone wanted to use it live. Having a push/pull pot that has to be up to turn it on is straight up stupid. So you accidentally knock it down while performing. Now you have to wait 5 seconds for sound. Derp derp derp Could see it as a studio guitar, but typically you have access to all kinds of effects in the studio anyways.
I think it more of a "Bedroom guitar", that you would just use to mess around with or write some shits for songs, or maybe for someone thst just have fun with it and just doesn't care to tour or go to a studio. But again, if I want some effects to play my guitar I would just buy a multi-effects unit instead of this whole thing.
When gibson destroyed all those firebird x guitars with the excavator, they lost me as a customer for life. Even sold all my gibsons because of this. No excuse for destroying them, it was irresponsible and a complete waste of resources. They could have been gutted and made to play like the old schools, but hey corporate American and insurance know best 👌
Another great video, thanks for sharing! That is definitely a unique design. I can see maybe a beginner wanting an "all-in-one design" where you only need a fresh battery and an amp to complete your setup, but coming from the land of rack effects and midi foot controllers I also see why it didn't sell too well. Still, I do see this being a snapshot in time down the road and someone somewhere may want to have it as a conversation piece. Rock on!
I like unique looking axes, but I just don't care for maple fret boards or chrome covered pickups. If it had rosewood and standard humbuckers then it would work for me.
I tried one of these in 2011. I engaged the robo-tuner to go from drop d to standard tuning, only to have the robo-tuner overtighten the 1st string until it snapped. It kept trying to tune, even with a broken string. I promptly handed the guitar back to the dealer and went on my way. There's no way I'd trust one of these at a gig. Neat concept though.
It has some cool stuff. I understand that they basically wanted to make a guitar that could literally do everything. But in some ways, despite being electric, the electric guitar is meant to be simple. It was typically devised to help boost volume and make it distinguished from a band back in the days when the entire band was playing together using only one microphone to record. It was an easy way to get volume. The tones and effects were more of a perk from the new medium of using electricity. Besides, not everyone wants the same effects and even then, there are variations of effects themselves. Sure, you can get thousands of sounds, but you can arguably get more of what you are looking for from simply buying an effects pedal that you actually like instead of having a bunch of general effects built into one guitar. Besides that, sometimes you want to change to a different guitar anyway(let’s be honest, what guitarist doesn’t like playing at least two different guitars. Whenever I go to a shop, I feel like a kid in a candy store.)? Though the body looks comfortable and I love that they use swamp ash(I love bright toned woods.), the body is just ugly to me. Particularly, the shape of the top horn. I just feel like it could have been slightly less awkward looking. I love the color. In some ways, I am a little sad that this guitar failed. It is quite impressive for what it is. But most musicians want an instrument that feels like an instrument. Not an instrument that feels like a machine. Even synths still look like pianos. Many sample pads often have pressure sensors to give more dynamic options, but also to give it a more organic feel. There is just something intimate about a musician and their instrument. The more you can physically alter the sound, the more the instrument seems part of you. Too many knobs and presets kind of kills that illusion. It works fine for DJ’s and midi guys. But it isn’t the preferred circumstance for guitarists.

ozan özenir I think what I’m trying to say is getting lost in translation. I understand how to work the guitar. What I’m saying is it would be difficult to fix the guitar (electronics wise)
Very pleasant in appearance, evokes nostalgia for the early 70's . My first full electric guitar had the same body shape and was made somewhere in the vastness of the USSR in '74... Relatively uncomfortable for playing on the lap with its 25.5 " mensure. It is a pity that Gibson ruined such a large amount of high-quality tonewood with its robotization !
If it just had the three pickups and a 5 way switch and maybe push pull as a bonus feature it would be pretty cool. I like the shape and color and maple fingerboard.
Well this guitar is now a sought after collectors item. The price had shot up since Gibson made them extinct. If you own them now, you have the last laugh and richer.

Oooooo, scary stuff! Thanks for covering this guitar. It is good to see an unbiased review which were not common when the X hit the market and magazines were doing their usual hype.
Played it till it didn't work, got so frustrated, took it off unplugged it, threw it across the room, took a sledge hammer to it , made a lot of toothpicks, R.I.P.
I play synth in the front ensemble in my high schools marching band. So saving the sounds on the sounds on the firebird x doesn’t sound as hard as saving a patch on a synth.
I've loved that quote ever since I heard it. It's so relevant and seems to apply to just about everything. Whether it be a politicians policies or your supervisors next "great idea", it's true for just about everything.
I like the detail of your vid description. was lookin to go back to the part about the volume pot and found it super quick. was just gonna suggest checkin it, then saw things I cant suggest about.ha never seen a plastic backed one before.
I like it. I have absolutely no problem with Gibson putting out crazy experimental guitars as long as they also make the classics and don't mess with them.
looking back now he was showing what they could do and might do because they were in trouble and we didn't know yet. this did grab attention to the brand again
You know the old one, ' when they built-they broke the mold....and rumor has it they beat the S__t out of the mold maker' ... Years back my buddy owned a store The Gear Trader in CA. We became a Gibson Dealer, and these guys came in...all I remember was sales quota, from Gibson-You gotta move these refrigerators- but no help to understand these. A push pull that needs up pos to turn on guitar? With a 5sec wait for sound? At the very least should be down pos. Operative word abbreviation POS. Rip out the guts, make it nickel plate hrdwr, 5way switch + coil-taps, and actually secretly have a crush for a guitar that tunes itself, and I'd be digging that, finish, headstock, the works.
You did a great job showcasing this nightmare guitar. Gibson employees must have cringed when this was unveiled - "TA-DA, presenting the Gibson Aztec!!".
I used to have a Line 6 Variax guitar. That was confusing enough, but a nice idea. It didn't have lag, but it feel like there was some sort of detachment between player and guitar. Does this one feel like playing a real guitar?
Lesse, it's blue in a swirl pattern. Never liked blue guitars but sorta dig this. Three mini HB's. Might be cool. Maple fingerboard with a 3 on a side headstock. Ok, not a fan but tame compared to that Reverse Flying V that was made. I've never hated ANY guitar like that one and at 61, played here and there since i was 15. I know you liked these. all's well,,,,
Gibson usually puts special fret markings at either the 5th or the 12th fret for some reason. Before you mentioned the volume pot issue I was thinking to myself, " I bet the wiring in that thing is a nightmare" lol then you opened it up, yup I was correct! With that much wiring and interfacing going on it could be anything from a simple bad ground to the pot being bad or even as you said some preset configuration. I doubt it's a preset issue though since with the batteries out guitars like this usually reset to factory settings. It's a pretty guitar and I really like the head stock design. I was noticing that the truss rod cover appears to be identical to the one on that Zero model I bought from you. It seems that every time I come up with what I think is a unique thing to do to that Zero you show me a video where my idea has already been used lol.
I just bought one used and it is incredible. I agree with pretty much everything in this video. My only issue is not having the ability to play passively.
As someone who likes traditional Gibson design, the design of the guitar was quite good. If this guitar would have been available with more traditional electronic fare and a smaller tailpiece I would have been interested.
Does this have wires running through the neck to those robot tuners Austin? Forgive me if you mention it I'm only 10 mins in. Cheers bud. I suppose it could be wireless? How long have you been playing Austin? Thanks.
Hmmm... good question! I was going to answer you and say that no it doesn't but then I got to thinking about how a switch on the body can activate the tuners on the head stock. I am going to say it's probably wire less, I doubt they would run wiring through the neck.
I think it was an odd choice to go with 23 frets. I always thought it made a guitar look like someone either didn't cut enough off of a 22 fret, or cut too much off of a 24 fret. It just seems like the only things "Gibson" about it are the logo and the set neck. This thing looks atrocious online, but I agree, gut those horrid electronics, trash the "pedals" that it comes with, and just throw in some old school electronics to have a (most likely) awesome playing beast. It's just a damn shame that Gibson crushed a ton of these instead of going that route and trying to resell, or donating to music programs.
Recently saw KMac2021's meme life video, it was hilarious. You missed your dead stare opportunity! Then this guitar is mind blowing. Out of the box thinking, for sure. You continue to educate me. Very informative, can't tell you enough how impressive this channel has been. Thanks Austin.
I saw the original reviews, never seen one for real. It looks all right, loads of sounds, would suit anyone in prison for a very long time. Troggy says it don't work, some guy in the comments says it's because of a setting on the EQ fader (the top of the guitar) which - kind of says quite a lot. You'd have to know this guitar very well to use it on stage and then - what kind of band are you going to be in to use all that stuff? I've got a Firebird, a "reverse" with the Eagle scratchplate and 2 P90s - really simple. I don't think I'd trade it for a Firebird X. Big hand for the Trog, he's all right.
The whole Darkfire/Dusktiger/FirebirdX guitars were NOT for your average joe, but can be really useful for someone who wants to use it in studio, or learn the features.
Isn’t it enough that I have to read an app inch thick manual to use my multi effect foot pedal? I suppose I wouldn’t need the pedal with that guitar having all the effects on board. It might actually be a great guitar for the studio. I’ll take your word for it that it’s a good guitar.
If they had put all these features on a better looking body shape these may have sold well. Color is great and I don't mind the maple board. But, that shape, I can't unsee that. It should forever be known as Henry J's tombstone. Great video as always Austin! God bless bro. 🎸👍
I think it's beautiful, but all that extra crap turns me off. If I could get that body with regular tuners, pickup selector, and all that, I would love it! Maybe individual pickup one-off switches, ala Fender Jaguar?
I've got one of these in blue also. Many people hate on them but, I do like mine. (The volume on mine works fine). I also have it's earlier brother, The Dusk Tiger. Of the two, I prefer the Firebird X.
I love the guitar and the styling just hate the 5k price tag and the electronics. They should of sold it as a regular guitar for a normal price. You can get a really nice lp for 5k
Great. So now I can also choose to use the effects in my guitar, besides the effects in my amp, the effects in my modeller, or my stompboxes. Just great. PS where were those pills against option paralysis again ? ;)
I saw a Gibson Firebird X for sale on Reverb. They only wanted $14,599.00 + $199.00 shipping = $14,798.00 ADD TAX - $1,480.00 comes out to a grand total (not including any Reverb charges) of $16,277.80 for it. Too bad they didn't have 5 more for sale because I would have bought a half dozen of these garbage guitars. For one thing, I hate those damn tuners. I thought that being the most disliked Gibson guitar, that I might be able to find one pretty cheap !!! I was wrong. I wonder if it was ever sold and who was stupid enough to pay that price ???
The thing that was wrong with these, is what made guitar innovators fail since the 70's or so. It has been tried before. Remember the Bond Electraglide? It was a carbon fibre and aluminium composite guitar from the 80's with active electronics and instead of a fretboard it had a one piece machined aluminium trapeze stairs step . It failed. Miserably. If you still can find one the first problem is that the electronics no longer work. So a 30-ish 40-is guitar and there is no way to use it some of them for the last 20 years. Compare that to say a 1948 broadcaster. Still works and you can connect it to the latest stuff if needed. That's what wrong with these. That is why the line 6 variaxes do not really sell. Add to that the rather radical form and it was never going to be accepted by the masses. The fact that Henry wanted to be a celebrity instead of a CEO and the fact that they tried to shove this technology down everybody's throat in 2017 did not help either. Along with the other quality problems this was doomed from the beginning. The should have made a separate company for it and make the technology optional. Oh wait, that is what line 6 are doing ; it is there if you want to use it with a Helix and a variaxe but you can still use it with that old tele from the 50's or so.
Learning what all this thing could do would be kind if a cluster fuck. I could see one of these being a studio guitar, but a guy gigging on the road would most likely opt out. I can’t see the switches holding up being gigged regularly against pedals. Definitely different, but I can see why it didn’t fly.

I play synth in the front ensemble in my high schools marching band. So saving the sounds on the sounds on the firebird x doesn’t sound as hard as saving a patch on a synth.
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.”-
Ian Malcolm, Chaos theory expert.
I've loved that quote ever since I heard it. It's so relevant and seems to apply to just about everything. Whether it be a politicians policies or your supervisors next "great idea", it's true for just about everything.
Happy Halloween !
I like the detail of your vid description. was lookin to go back to the part about the volume pot and found it super quick. was just gonna suggest checkin it, then saw things I cant suggest about.ha never seen a plastic backed one before.
U have the EQ on the side of the guitar turned all the way down.. Thats why U have no volume
I still prefering a 60's Guild Starfire XII...
It's serious!!!
...And hold the "Farty Raindrop" song!!!
I like it. I have absolutely no problem with Gibson putting out crazy experimental guitars as long as they also make the classics and don't mess with them.
The fact that it needs repair says it all. I spend half my life fixing stuff that doesn't work right, but it's almost never my guitars. No thank you.
This guitar was ahead of its time.
looking back now he was showing what they could do and might do because they were in trouble and we didn't know yet. this did grab attention to the brand again
Jettar is beautiful, is it integrated with the vaser. How much is it?
I feel it is my moral duty to watch your Ukulele video!
you should review the les Paul HD-6X PRO next......
Rip out the guts, make it nickel plate hrdwr, 5way switch + coil-taps, and actually secretly have a crush for a guitar that tunes itself, and I'd be digging that, finish, headstock, the works.
i wouldnt say no if someone gave me one, but i would not buy it, i am happy with my foot board and not all of the knobs on this guitar
You like the firebird X? I like ALL guitars! That includes the firebird X!
I know you liked these. all's well,,,,
Happy Halloween Trog . Cool guitar , since I like fender offsets it appeal's to me .
Now that the video of Gibson destroying these has been releases, I bet these go up in value.
It also has 23 frets…
Forgive me if this was in the video and I just missed it.
@@Rand_al_Thor372 how did you find this out?
Power goes through the strings. That’s why you can’t have them touch anything. As per the manual.
I remember being in highschool and thinking these were the coolest guitars and looking at them everyday in the library at school
The head stock is still better than epiphones!
No
omg...i really want this guitar...its amazing .why is it not being talked about more??
Episode quality multiplying at a major rate, keep it up brother!
Well I like too.....but just the shape, color and pu , not the all optional on that...maybe they built a simple one?
How much were they brand new ?
Any sound? Will it let you do a whammy bar dive?
I’d buy a lefty version. I don’t like how the firebird body is upside down
Difference between this and the variax?
That wiring harness looks like something out of a Yugo.
Isn’t it enough that I have to read an app inch thick manual to use my multi effect foot pedal? I suppose I wouldn’t need the pedal with that guitar having all the effects on board. It might actually be a great guitar for the studio. I’ll take your word for it that it’s a good guitar.
Man... wish they had this same body shape headstock and color and just thrown on some normal electronics.. I'd play it then.
If they had put all these features on a better looking body shape these may have sold well. Color is great and I don't mind the maple board. But, that shape, I can't unsee that. It should forever be known as Henry J's tombstone. Great video as always Austin! God bless bro. 🎸👍
I think this is a nice guitar for making music on recording i guess cuz it seems like its an all in guitar
Just great.
PS where were those pills against option paralysis again ? ;)
I have believe they didn't remove the pickups?
26:26 thank me later
I saw a Gibson Firebird X for sale on Reverb. They only wanted $14,599.00 + $199.00 shipping = $14,798.00 ADD TAX - $1,480.00 comes out to a grand total (not including any Reverb charges) of $16,277.80 for it. Too bad they didn't have 5 more for sale because I would have bought a half dozen of these garbage guitars. For one thing, I hate those damn tuners. I thought that being the most disliked Gibson guitar, that I might be able to find one pretty cheap !!! I was wrong. I wonder if it was ever sold and who was stupid enough to pay that price ???
those pedals that come with it are freaking huge man!!!
This to me is what an electro harmonex guitar would be-a lot of cool sounds with limited usability in real time, and broken.
I quite like the guitar
Did u get that tone pot fixed yet?
They sounds better than I imagined but 95% of those effects wouldn't even make it onto a muse album.
fiiiiinelyyyyy i can rip now
The thing that was wrong with these, is what made guitar innovators fail since the 70's or so.
I think it looks cool, love the color
Everything that sucks at some point will be a treasure in the future.
This review --> even though the guitar is broken and maybe impossible to fix, it's pretty good!
2 humbuckers, more traditional wiring and an ebony fretboard and I would look into buying one
what song is at 18 28?
