This guy obviously doesn't know what he's talking about. The rover 75 is a great car. It has beautiful retro styling, a superb ride, comfortable, well equipped. The V6 makes a great noise. Don't forget that it did win car of the year when it was launched. As I said, a great underrated car.

It wasn't built to compete with BMW, but it was designed by BMW built on a BMW chassis. I saw this on test with no badges well before its release to the market.

shush - if these people want to think it's a bad car let them. Keeps the price down for all of us who do like it. It's really strange that it was attacked for being retro when new Minis, Fiat 500s and VW beetles are just that aren't they?

Unfair view from someone who's expectations from a car are clearly different to what the 75 offers. If you want fun and sporty MG had the MG ZS 180 or MG ZT 190. I am just casting my mind back to the Audi A3 of that age, and what a dull Germanic plain interior that car has.

I have driven Passat 2006 and it does not compare with rover 75 at comfort, and interior finishes. Passat looks like a low budget car besides Rover 75. Look at Passat door seals for god sake. They look like a the first seals ever invented, and glue everywere. And after, look at R75 stitches. Rover 75 it is what they announced it to be. Time will prove this.

I have a 20 year old Audi A4 and a 21 year old Rover 75. The Rover is a comfier ride on uneven A/B roads roads. They are both diesels and both very reliable. There is no rust on the painted upper bodywork of the Rover, and underneath is no worse than the Audi. Neither have underbody corrosion mentioned on the MOT. The Audi has had two new front wings due to unsightly cosmetic rust on the wheel arches (common with VAG cars of this era). The interior trim of the Rover has held up better than the Audi. The Audi needed the glovebox lid fixing, armrest catch fixing, has scratched "soft-touch" coatings and worn radio/climate control buttons.
There is not a lot in it really between them. They can both reach mega-miles. The Rover is classier to look at. Personal preference really. I don't agree with the Rover bashing, it's unfair.

A complete flop here - smaller inside than it needed to be to compete to compete with German, Swedish or Japanese in the same price range. The quality was not there in the body or interior either.
Then there was the engine. Only the 2.5 litre V6 was available here to start, and it had a very poor reputation. Many needed a complete new engine at only around the 80,000 km mark as they suffered from all sorts of problems. When the 2,0 litre diesel became available, the picture was a bit better - the main issue was the lack of any sort or power.
Overall, not a surprise that it did not last long on the market. Sad when you think back to the quality car Rover was until the SDI. Downhill from there on.

I had a P4 75 as my first car, 14 years old when I bought it. It was a car of exceptional quality mechanically and in the bodywork also. The aluminium castings in the intake system had a real beauty.. No performance at all, taking the best part of the morning to get from the garage to the street, let alone the corner to the main road, but with that quality you did not mind.

@@graemedurie9094 Yes, understandable, as the gasket problems weren't fixed until about 2000 (?). I'm looking to buy a 2004 2.5, some people claim to have 200-250k miles on them.
I'm aware it's not the same universe as a Rover from its golden ages, when Rover was about the greatest automaker... I don't expect that. Launching the 75, Rover were almost bust, had an idea, and, using what they had, put all their hope into satisfying us (like Alfa Romeo 156, Saab CombiCoupé, Apple iMac...). Would be nice if it avoids warping its head each weekly shopping tour though....

I tried to love the Rover 75 but I just can't. My biggest problem with it it's that it tries to look sophisticated but doesn't really feel like it. Everything inside, buttons, panels, the road noise and handling - it just feels thin, light and cheap. Even the doors don't have that satisfying, heavy clunk know from Jags or most German counterparts.
