This is my fourth strymon pedal. So very happy i decided on this over a second carbon copy. Decided to put my sunset in front of my riverside and man I have the happiest signal chain i ever could have imagined. Thankyou Strymon !!!!
One of the things that I LOVE about these Strymon demos is that they are so informative. I've had an El Capistan for years and have really only utilized the most basic elements of the pedal. This is opening up totally new areas of exploration for me.
For those of us who remember using reel-to-reel machines, razor blades and splicing tape, etc....this pedal is even more amazing! The detail in recreating every nuance is brilliant. And you even throw in a spring reverb! Nice work on your line of pedals. I also dig your Reverberator.
In the last 6 months I've gone through many, many pedals looking for my sound w/ no backround hiss/static. It's tough because I go stereo out directly into the board and you can hear absolutly everything. I tried EHX, Keeley, BOSS, etc and many had cool sounds but all had a hiss to them underlying the sound, especially when turning up the effect. Finally I tried an El Capistan and to my shock it was DEAD SILENT and it sounded amazing. Better then any other tape delay I'd tried previously. Best of both worlds. So now I just just got done ordering a Blue Sky and it should be at my door anytime now. Couldn't be more excited. From here on out I'll only play Strymon. You guys are a fantastic company. Thank you. Scott in SoCal
This is genius… The first section reminds me of an amazing Scottish band called the blue Nile as it moves on it sounds a lot like the repeats you would hear on the Early massive attack records just so good.
Got my El Capistan today and I must say Im floored!! So much fun to play with and I absolutely love the sound in sound :-) Thanks for all your hard work to the guys at Strymon. Absolute best quality pedals out there!
The Favorite Switch allows you to use two separate settings on the EL Capistan. You can recall a saved favorite setting or switch off the Favorite Switch and go back to the manual knob position sound on the El Capistan.
Thanks so much for your feedback. While we can't guarantee updates, changes, or additions in feature requests, we do listen to and consider all customer suggestions. :)
@gantman For some of the demos we're using a Damage Control tube preamp as a direct box, for others we're going direct, for others we've miked up an amp. Thanks!
That's kind of a vague question but the El Capistan functions very similar to the EP-3. It even has a record mode called Sound on Sound. The El Capistan actually has a secondary function under the MIX parameter that allows for a +3db Boost/Cut so you could use the EP boost in front of the El Cap but it may not be necessary.
Mr. Celi your El Capistan sounds great. I'm a Tape echo lover and my RE201 is in need of repair. I believe it's evident that you got tired of musicians saying "It's good but it doesn't sound like my tape echo" ..." you can't make it sound like a tape machine"....Well Pete you took the challenge and nailed it WOW. I will buy this as soon as my limited pension budget will allow. Yes, I will repair my RE201 because it's an old friend and has memories. Strymon rocks because Pete Celi is on the case.....Cheers :)
@TenebrousSounds our international distributors prohibit us from shipping directly overseas. But we do have more heading to the UK now. Dealers are listed at: strymon DOT net / dealers
You don't have to switch it back and forth if you want to use it in mono. It will work fine in mono if the TRS jumper is set to stereo but just keep in mind that you'll lose any true stereo effects you have placed before it.
Just sold my Carbon Copy Deluxe after hearing this pedal. Not sure why I look elsewhere when I always come back to Strymon. Can't wait to hear it feeding into my Flint.
@FlipsidesBand Sounds like a classic issue with true bypass. High impedance guitar signals can sometimes be loaded down by cables, pickups, amp, other pedals. You're right, using buffered bypass (like switching to Trails mode or using something like a Boss tuner in your chain) can alleviate those tricky impedance issues with some signal chains.
Pete plays a note or chord and then stops, letting you hear what the delay ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE. Such a nice change from most delay pedal videos, where they can't seem to stop themselves from playing Edge-like jangly-bop triplet patterns for the whole review. Thank you, Mr. Celi.
This is such a great demo! If you guys made a demo like this for the TimeLine pedal I would LOVE to see it and it may help in my decision making process of which pedal to buy. It's one thing to hear samples of what a pedal is capable of sounding like, but it is quite different to see somebody intelligently run through the features of a pedal like this.
@95shredder No, I'm talking about the overall loaded down effect that sometimes happens when you go stereo out in pedals. I found out you need to put it in the buffered "trails" mode and then it sounds normal in stereo. I think they should tip you to that in the manual; maybe they will. Here's my tip: Put an Xotic EP Booster in front of the El Capistan for a slightly fatter sounder-closer to the real thing but NOT the real thing at all, but to my ears, the closet thing of it's kind to an EP-3.
Great pedal, still ! I like it when the repeats are all the way up, you get that sci-fi sound that loops. Yeah I could listen to that all day, don’t know if my guitar playing would improve but it’s a lot of fun !!!
@DemoColorScheme Oh, don't get me wrong, they deserve all the compliments they can get. It's very easy to see all the hard work they've been doing, and it deserves to be known and rewarded!
Hi, I'm not sure I understand your question. There really aren't any secondary functions for the dotted 8th setting in particular but there are primary and secondary functions globally for the El Cap. Have you downloaded the complete manual from our website yet?
Wow this sounds really wonderful.. I've been looking and looking for a good tape delay emulation for months now so that I can leave my space echo 201 at home. I'm also really liking the bluesky. I don't need that much in the way of pedals due to having 2 eventides but I think these two pedals of yours are a must! So glad I found this.
@aikighost Some El Capistan features can be found on the dTape mode on TimeLine, including the wow & flutter. Though if you're looking for a completely dedicated tape echo experience, El Capistan is the answer. :)
@thesjkexperience Hey there! Glad you are liking El Capistan! I would try it both ways to see what you like better. If you want to flange your delay repeats, put Orbit after. For my own personal taste I'd probably put the Orbit before. But definitely experiment, there are no "correct" answers! :)
This is a great pedal. Here is a short video of me doing ambient guitar swells with nothing but the El Capistan and a volume pedal. Ambient Swells El Capistan Gretsch Power Jet
This pedal looks/sounds awesome, but I must admit that I'm a bit puzzled with the usage of the secondary functions : holding down the two buttons together isn't too practical, not mentioning the fact that you need to remember the secondary functions of each knobs ! But hey, liitle price to pay for such amazing sounds and functionalities...
Tape with spring tank? This is the surf guitarist dream! I need to measure and see if I can wedge this in where my DBD is now. Strymon, would you put this before or after the Orbit flanger?
@DemoColorScheme I understand what you mean, but at least in my case it only proves that they deliver what they promised... as always, I will wait until the dust settles down and I try one myself before I pass judgment.
Nice demo, can't wait to try one out for myself! Would like to know about the recently added TRS stereo input. When the switch is set to TRS mode, can I still plug in as mono without having to flick the switch back over? Would be using stereo input in the studio and then mono input on stage. Do I have to open up the back each time I use it?
Pete, first of all: This video absolutely can't reproduce how well your DSP algorithm and the A/D and D/A conversion maintains transparency, even in front of a crunchy amp, while hitting the El Capistan with a booster. It's really hard to get a muddy sound from it, unless you want to. And it's unbelievable how wide and big this delay sounds, even in front of said amp in mono! Ich code my own (open source) delay plugins and despite having gained some knowledge of the math behind filters, sample interpolation, and the like, you must have treated the SHARC with magic powder or something. Or invested a lifetime into experimenting and tweaking ;) Given that delay pedals of other vendors costing just a little less and can't even reach half the quality, the El Capistan is worth every damn penny!
Thanks very much for the kind words. It's always nice to hear from folks who hear and appreciate the effort that goes into crafting the sound of our pedals. No magic dust, but definitely lots of experimenting, calculating, tweaking and listening! - Pete
@@strymon I feel like asking a stupid question but I’m gonna do it anyway: why get both? They’re both tape echo pedals, right? So what would a deco add to the El Cap or vice versa? I know the Deco has the saturation option, the El Cap the more options with the tape age and such. But in the end, both can produce echo/slapback/delay sounds, right? I’m asking because I’m making up my mind which one I’m going to purchase. I’m in love with the Deco after watching the demo by Pete!
@@EddyCBlues No stupid questions here! Both have that overlap when it comes to slapback delay and short delays, but that is really where the similarities end. Some might find Deco limited as a delay pedal due to its limited repeats as well as delay times, whereas El Cap has more flexibility there. El Cap also has spring reverb as an added secondary. Deco works as a great jack of all trades, since it can give you chorusing and flanging, as well as everything from a light boost to overdrive using the Tape Saturation side of the pedal.
@@strymon Thank you for your reply! Much appreciated! I made my decision and went for the Deco. I'm not a fan of really huge, extreme delays, so what the Deco offers is enough. And I love the sound of the slapback, chorus and short delay. The tape saturation is a nice bonus. It should be here soon. Found a shop that had one in stock (due to the COVID situation, a lot is not available over here in the Netherlands at the moment). And if I start lusting after more intense delay, I just follow T.I.N Mateus leasd and order the El Cap as well ;-)
Great stuff. Have a bunch of the best of their pedals. Only things missing from Strymon are the weirder creative options from today's state of the art pedals, which you can add easily by picking up as well Earthquaker's Avalanche Run V2 and maybe something like Rainbow Machine. Then you have all the 'missing bits' and all the creative options.
That’s just great but you left out some important information. When holding down the two buttons and adjust a knob does the original knob function return or is it in the function that holding do the buttons create?
The secondary functions are only being controlled when you press and hold down both foot switches. As soon as they are released, the secondary settings are saved, and you go back to editing the actual listed functions for each knob.
Really cool! I just got mine a few days ago and am still learning. For the best effect I should use both outputs into two different speakers/amps correct? Stereo echo? Thanks!
Pete this is a great pedal, however I'd like to hear you do a demo with overdrive plz has I don't know any delay pedals that sound great when coupled with Overdrive?? Normally they just sound muggy, and your tone gets ruined, how does the El cap sound with overdrive on a solo? Before I buy
hey strymon! awesome work! i bought el capistan few weeks ago, and want to have favorite switch, for preset or tap tempo.. the problem is, it cannot be found anywhere here, in Indonesia.. any other external unit you can recommend? or any external unit is usable on el capistan? many thanks!
+Resi Saputra Thanks for checking out our video! :) You can use a latching toggle footswitch with a TRS cable connection that toggles between shorting the TIP with the RING or the SLEEVE as a favorite switch.
Yo Mister White! Nice pedal!
