Who were the Israeli Black Panthers?

  • The integration of Mizrahi Jews into Israel was not an easy one. Jews from countries like Yemen, Morocco, Iraq, Egypt, and Syria had lived there for generations and after much oppression found themselves running for their lives to Israel.
Enraged by the inequality they faced in their new home, a group of Mizrahi Jews took inspiration from the Black Panthers movement in the United States.
The Israeli Black Panthers, HaPanterim HaShchorim, who emerged from this painful time period fought for systematic change and their impact is still felt in Israeli society today.

The fact of the matter is Ashkenazim are not good at labeling; only recently have they begun acknowledging nonashkenazi Jews...it will be sometime till they properly identify us; for instances Yemenites are neither Sepharadi nor Mizrachi but Ashkenazim after years of erroneously calling us Sephardic are now calling us Mizrachi....which we do not identify ourselves as.....it will take some time but at least we are past the invisible stage.

This otherwise brilliant video clips seems to have missed a couple of rather important points.
Back then ca. 1970, I was in my early teens and a member of a French-Jewish youth organization, the EEIF a.k.a. the Jewish Scouts of France. This is a French movement supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports that played a crucial, fighting role in the survival of French and North African Jewry during WWII, and, as such, not one of the Zionist organizations. Israel and Zionism, as well as Jewish identity, religion and History, were nevertheless intensely studied and discussed among us, and since we were aware of the nuances and of the many problems of Israeli society and were in no way propagandized like Bnei Akiva or Hashomer Hatzair were, we retain the highest rate of Aliyah success among the Western European Jewish youth education outfits. We had a good picture of where we were heading and never had any unrealistic expectations from New Chelm!
In those days, we had begun, quite mysteriously, to receive a "Panterim" newsletter direct from Jerusalem, written in perfect French and in a very articulate fashion. This is when it became clear to me that this "proletarian" protest movement had a highly educated, intellectual core based on the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (which I later attended myself).
This simple fact alone, goes a long way into explaining why the "Panterim Shkhorim" never were never able to attain a consensual ideological platform among themselves!
The other point, which was perhaps overlooked to avoid undue controversy, is that Golda Meir's Labor-Socialist government's appalling reaction to the panterim's legitimate outcry, drew the first nail into the coffin of the Israeli Left, and brought about the accession of the nationalistic-religious Right to unchallenged power a few years later, as well as the dire, listing-to-starboard situation of Israel's Democracy today.

I'm going to dedicate the rest of my life to helping hispanics discover their jewish roots.
What's happening now is so complicated and tragic that I feel there is a need to unite and kindle a new kind of hope within the collective consciousness of the jewish world.
I feel there is a frustration growing within this collective consciousness and there needs to be progress in soothing this existential sore spot, I'm not right-wing but I believe having discussions and opening myself up to debate will also be necessary.

Fascinating! But from a gentile point of view Anti-Zionism is not necessarily Anti-Semitism. I come from a left wing latin-American family, there is no history of anti-semitism in the continent, I am from Mexico City and I can say with pride that the Jewish community is historically loved here, and even thought there is undoubtedly drug cartel violence in the north of the country, racial hate crimes are rare, and can say confidently none existent against the Jewish community. Also Mexico has a long history of open arms to people in exile, Spanish republicans escaping Franco during the civil war, Chileans, Uruguayans and Argentinians escaping the military coup in the 70s, etc. I study Jewish Kabbalah with an Israeli teacher and I have come to believe that anti-semitism is anti civilization. The Jewish community have brought so much light to the world in every aspect of science, literature and technology that anti-semitism seems to me ridiculous. Yet from also a very left wing oriented upbringing I think Zionism can be criticised not based on race but in politics, just like the long and fascinating history of the left wing in Israel (kibbutz) I am sure they can consider the last decade right wing governments in the country and their ties to people like Donald Trump or the Saudi Kingdom quite controversial.

@@buenosnachos1374 Zionism is the political movement that aimed to the creation of the state of Israel in the historical land were the Jewish people once occupied. Because Zionism has religious roots too, since the Torah story for occupying that land in the first place happened by the use of force and war after the exodus from Egypt. Zionism is controversial because is doesn’t support the two state solution, their solution for Palestine (without being publicly acknowledged) is simply pushing them out. Jerusalem has been since the new occupation of the land a legal fight for a possible capital in the two state solution since it also has the biggest concentration of Islamic Israelis who live and born there and is also the place were the dome of the rock the third most import mesquite for the Islam is located. Donald Trump as the bully he is in decided uni laterally to put the US embassy in Jerusalem as a provocation against the two state conflict with the celebration of right wing ex PM Netanyahu. Also Netanyahu to the surprise of the world and for the first time in Israel history stablished relationships with the Saudi Kingdom, I think no one has to tell you how controversial is that, the record of the Saudi kingdom against human rights, women rights and liberties speak for themselves. So to sum it all up, being Anti-Zionism is not in any way being Anti-Semitic, if you care for the human lives in Palestine beyond their political leaders, beyond the one part who deals in terrorism, just the human lives and the fact that they live in apartheid, the fact the have only half a day access to electricity, etc. If you are critical about it and have a political opinion you are critical of the Zionist agenda and not critical to the Jewish community.

@@txemanovelo Thanks for clarifying. You write with a lot of confidence about a complex topic.
If we are concerned about the ancient Israelites’ use of force as presented in the Torah, shouldn’t we be even more concerned about the Arab imperialist conquest of the Levant as well as most of the Middle East and North Africa?
“Zionism is controversial because it doesn’t support the two state solution, their solution for Palestine (without being publicly acknowledged) is simply pushing them out” - this is a fallacious statement. Zionists agreed to (and proposed) multiple partition plans, even those that were clearly not in their favor - Peel Commission, UN Partition Plan, Barak offer, Olmert offer. Every partition was rejected by the Arab side. If the Zionists so wanted to push out the Arabs, why are there 2 million Arabs in Israel today?
There is no “new occupation” of Jerusalem - Jewish presence in Jerusalem predates the Islamic invasion by a millennium and a half, and there is absolutely no reason why Muslim rule should be considered the norm. If anything, the return of Jerusalem to the governance by the only people who could claim the city as central to their civilization can be considered a “liberation.”
“Jerusalem has been since the new occupation of the land a legal fight for a possible capital in the two state solution since it also has the biggest concentration of Islamic Israelis who live and born there and is also the place were the dome of the rock the third most import mesquite for the Islam is located.” - There is no connection between the points you are making. “Islamic Israelis” are Israeli, so they should have no issue with Jerusalem being the capital of the country where they live. That the Dome of the Rock and the al-Aqsa Mosque are in Jerusalem contains religious significance to the Muslims, but does not mean that Jerusalem had political significance to them until it was recently invented. That is why Jerusalem was not a capital of a Muslim state and for centuries played no political role unlike Cairo, Damascus and Baghdad.
The part about Saudi Arabia is just odd. Are you suggesting that Israel should not form relations with Arab states until they become like Finland? Does Mexico avoid relations with Saudi Arabia (and every other state) because of its record on human rights?
The reality, whether you realize it or not, is that for all its imperfections Israel offers far more rights to all its citizens than any state in the Middle East and it also serves as the only line of defense for the Jews from being slaughtered by their neighbors as they were in numerous massacres committed by the Arabs.
Clearly, there is a lot more to comment, but I’ll leave off here. Being anti-Zionist today means supporting the destruction of Israel and replacing it with another entity, which is a negation of the Jewish right to sovereignty and self-determination. The only way one could support this is by holding Israel, the world’s only Jewish state, and the Jewish people to a standard that no other nation in the world is held to. And, that, my friend, is antisemitic.

    • @txemanovelo
      @txemanovelo Год назад +2

@@buenosnachos1374 it’s indeed as you say too complex to find a simple solution, but look, I am against imperialism in any form like many people in this planet, it doesn’t matter if that imperialism comes from either Russia or The States, but that doesn’t make me anti Russian or anti American, I don’t condemn the history of US interventionism and brutality in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, against the American population, I condemn it against their government. To say in this video that the American black panthers were against the state of Israel is complicated, I think they were pro Palestine, and same thing, being pro Palestine doesn’t necessarily make you anti-Semitic, there are people in this planet who only think on the human crisis there, and relate to it not even in a political level just in a humane manner.
If you consider that, just like Israel right now has a right wing government doesn’t mean that in 6 years it could have the exact opposite, we cannot reduce anti-Zionism as saying “it’s supporting the destruction of Israel”, I don’t think it works that way. A more progressive government in the region could find other political solutions to the conflict that are not Zionist, that do not fall into a religious “manifest destiny” and that takes distance from that weird idea of the “sole owner of the land”. I mean, think about native Americans in the states, do they ever got their nations back? No, so history tells us that the land as a concept is abstract. If you cannot really say that the Al Aqsa Mosque / Dome if the Rock belongs to ONE community (because you can’t) vs the other, then you can neither say it for the land.

@@txemanovelo I hear you. But that is not how it works. That Israelis (Jews and Arabs alike) may democratically choose a right wing or left wing government has no bearing on the premise of Zionism. Anti-Zionism is in fact a direct negation of the right of the Jewish people to a sovereign state in their national homeland. With that said, Israel is the national home of the Jewish people that guarantees equal rights to ALL its citizens.
That you may wish for Israelis to elect a different political party does not make you anti-Zionist. What makes a person anti-Zionist (and antisemitic) is suggesting that Israel should not exist at all (or unless it chooses the politician that you approve of).
"Progressive" does not mean practical or prudent. After centuries of persecution under both Muslims and Christians, the Jews would be insane to take part in some kind of social experiment that gives up their ability to defend themselves.
What does it mean to be pro-Palestinian? Does it mean caring about the Palestinian Arabs' economic, physical and social well-being? Or does it mean supporting Arafat's quest to destroy Israel? If the BP supported the latter, you have your answer.
Something else to consider is that Israel clearly has the ability to destroy its Arab adversaries and yet doesn't do it. If the Arabs felt that they have the ability to destroy Israel, would they hesitate to try? The answers were clearly given in 1948, 1967 and 1973.

The Jews are who Gd chose and set aside as His Cornerstone in this World, to be His Light to the Nations, Not the Heathen Nations to the Jews.
Yes, your book of Revelation is like the rest of the Greek Tall Tales, BLASPHEMOUS, IDOLATROUS, HERETICAL, POLYTHEISTIC, PAGAN AND ANTISEMITIC! It was the Idolaters of Jesus have used to justify their BURNING OF JEWS ALIVE FOR NOT ABANDONING THE CREATOR AND HIS HOLY TORAH and their ongoing 1700+ Years of INFLICTING PERSECUTION, OPPRESSION AND SLAUGHTERING OF THE GD'S SON/SERVANT ISRAEL THE JEWS, becoming their longest enduring and most DEADLIEST of all their Oppressors. To a T, it is Christianity alone that fits the description of the LAST BEAST, ENEMY OF GD AND HIS SON/SERVANT ISRAEL THE JEWS/HIGH HOLY ONES.
Jeremiah 31 tells of GD INSCRIBING HIS HOLY ETERNAL TORAH/LAW ON THEIR HEARTS OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL (ISRAEL AND JUDAH, United, Restored and Redeemed) as Gd's Priestly People, Israel the Jews will all become WALKING EMBODIMENT'S OF HIS HOLY ETERNAL TORAH/LAW.
Isaiah tells of Gd making the Nations/Gentiles Serve and go by Israel/the Jews Leadership, the Wealth of the Nations will be given to them and the Nations that Refuse shall PERISH, just as He will make the children of their Oppressors go to them BENT OVER, just as He will make those who have Despised His Son/Servant Israel the Jews to PROSTRATE at the soles of their feet. David tells of Gd executing Justice upon the Nations into a heap of corpses, for Gd Warned the Nations/Gentiles long, long ago, if you come against His Son/Servant Israel the Jews, then He is going to come against YOU, all in HIS timing. You can read all about it Isaiah 60 and David's 110th Sacred Song.
