Daughter has always been my safe space, please never stop.
The lyrics seem to describe a person who is struggling with their thoughts and feelings in the middle of the night. They are using medication to try to calm their mind and avoid repeated thoughts. The person wants to be close to someone they care about and look them in the eyes, but they are not able to do so at the moment. They mention watching dandelions grow and die, perhaps as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of life and relationships. So true. I find now more than ever people are communicating even less. You try your hardest and are just left waiting, for weeks sometimes or never at all to only hear that people miss you.
Great analysis, I definitely agree with many of those ideas. I also think they wanted to confess some type of love to the person. But is very hesitant and doesn’t want to do it through the phone because it will lead to a state of longing and waiting. But part of them wants to do it through the phone because there is this fear inside of them to do it in person. I think they spend so much time in darkest of nights contemplating everyday how they should do it. And not necessarily wants requited love, but just wants the decisiveness of the dilemma. Because the feeling of indecisiveness in love is very akin to fear it feels like it’s a derivative of fear.
I know Daughter probably won't ever read this but.
This song has helped me cope with a lot of problems in my life. Daughter is the most unique band in the world. The rhythm, the melodies, the sound design, and best of all...the lyrics. Elena has the most down to Earth voice I have ever heard. I have listened to thousands of tracks and no one has managed blow my mind the way Daughter makes music. I hope this band never stops making music or it would be a sad day for us fans.

It's been 3 days and this is on repeat rent free in my brain
When younger, used to read a lot and still do. Stories about characters having as many adventures as friends as per usual. I, on the other hand, would only stare at the window for hours alone and hours wondering how it would be to live like them. To wonder how it would be to be loved like them while staying home having to be medicated with some heavy psychiatric pills. Those days might be in my past but is good to hear them conveyed in a song like this. It makes you feel less... alone in your quiet suffering like some art intends.

“ i thought I’d find you here” they say as they turn smoke in hand, “ why did i not show enough dread to my face? They say as the ashes fall the city is darkened by the dark sky as the shoreline looks like gold in a dark sea the lights twinkling as they smoke leaning on the railing. A slowed dance was better than being here anything but this dam city this dam sea and dam home. “ no you didn’t and smoking is bad for your lungs” they say as well the smoker turns to them worn down by time life and hopeless lovers. “ fix me and I’ll stop” the smoker replies. The other looks to the sea wind blowing in there hair expression of stone as they look at the smoker dress knew but being paid for skin worn and the hands worked. They didn’t belong here the smoker was a mystery to those inside.
blurred faces scribbled out like lies told by hopeful souls burning in a burn out world. “ no one can fix you your broken” they say to the smoker. Eyes of green in a cold dark city. The only colour left in a city of mystery and vague truths. They draw a smoke “ everyone is broken it’s what brings us together like notes wheezing out and writhing with protest as they try to realise they aren’t meant to be something” they say. The green eyed doll can’t call them smoker they need a identity to the words and figure wrapped in this cities light and it’s dark tales of love and pasts long gone. “ give me a name and I’ll give you a past” they say smoker draws the cigarette once more. “ shame i was enjoying our game”. They say before puffing it out and standing to go back in into bodies of suits and dresses scribbled blanks and a game all must play. “ I’ll see you around green eyes” they say as they grab the door. “ see you too smoker” the smoker smiles before entering into the bustling home. Green eyes leans on the railing there role’s reversed and now they watch the shoreline and sky, “ beauty beneath a dream no one dare wake from” they say as they stay silent for a few more minutes until they too join to the bustling sound of the chaos of scribbled faces. at least smoker was the one face they truly saw
