I think the big issue is comparison. Lots of people are flooding into this hobby right now watching youtubers such as yourself with basements and stockrooms full of product thinking, "I have to get in on all of this! I need to buy all these booster boxes and ETBs and catch up so I don't miss the boat!" People forget that Pokemon is a MASSIVE international company and brand. It isn't going anywhere. Demand will be a rollercoaster, we're in a crazy bull market right now and at some point in the future demand will ease again but 20 years from now we might not be talking about surging sparks or prismatic evolutions (we might be), we might be talking about some set that comes out in 2028! The best thing to do if you want to invest starting now is buy sets you like, that you can afford and hold on. Keep doing that for years and you'll find success. Enjoy your videos man, keep it up!
I'm one of those people. I've been trying hard to get anything with no luck. 151 is impossible and the other sets I'm interested in are sold out too. Makes me just want to stick with reorganizing my vintage cards.
@@AtomicWhiteWhale If it makes you feel any better I FOMO'd in about 3 months ago, bought like 10 different booster boxes from various sets and held for about a month before I went full degen and ripped it all. VERY not worth it hahaha. I've since reset and am holding onto a few sealed products and will continue to collect with no intention to rip. Find what makes you happy and stick to that. Don't let others drag you into doing something!
Market is easy to manipulate. Lets say a particular sealed product has only 20 pieces listed. If you buy the cheapest one and then relist it at like 20% and do it once a month. That alone would artificially drive the price up. Its simple
same thing happened with champs path.. it was 100 an etb at release basically... price will oscillate with prismatic AND terastal festival as well.. ppl are just letting fear drive their purchases ... but what I do believe is a bit different this time (starting with surging sparks) distro is raising prices way sooner on new released items and I feel like they are altering first wave allocations so they can make more money releasing more of the same product a week or 2 later .. like how is sparks already 160 at distro level when they surely aren't paying more money for it.. its wild times for sure
I complained to price charting about how low they had the Umbreon and they actually messaged me back and raised the price that day on price charting! 😂
Vintage and new interact for sure! Sometimes a new one makes and old one less good for gameplay, or just less pretty. Sometimes it’s a throwback to an old card, and that can raise the old card’s value, etc.
2 things first of all I come to your channel because you are to the point and do no waste our time with useless small talk like most investing tcg channels. Second thing is I learned now how to manipulate cards with low pop so thanks for that.
Buyouts definitely do happen with modern cards still. Look at the evolving skies pack prices on TCG you can see that these back get bought out to a specific price point on single day events. This is different however as the demand is that high and people are ok with the new price point
For the modern side of collecting, people seem to forget about the TCG side of Pokémon as well. A card can increase in demand based on how well it plays. A new card can outshine (and therefore devalue) another card, or it can drop from regulation. If the TCG players want it, that's a whole other market that needs to be supplied. Pokemon does a good job of mitigating this by having the more collectible cards be duplicates of normal cards, but if I had the money to, I'd absolutely want to put some SIR's in my deck.
@jims7773 I just hope they print the hell out of them. The only way they're going to best the scalpers is to inflate their currency by making tons more of it.
Bruhhhh Alex I’m dead 😂😂😂 you’re a lot of things man, but I wouldn’t but funny too high on that list. HOWEVER that mental picture you painted of the Vintage heads chanting their mantra of “older! Rarer! Minter! Better!” has me joked out brother! That’s some high quality comedy right there 😂😂
Great take. The desirability of owning the artwork on cards like the umbreon is huge, and distorts the basic number rules that apply to older more basic artwork cards. The psychology element of the economics of these markets is fascinating ☺️
Sounds like it’s the Nostalgia Nomics MC at work again. No, no not motorcycle club but MODERN CABAL. Working on the name 😂 (total sarcasm) love the content Alex!
I saved up for months with my paper route to buy a Surging Sparks booster box. I tried to sell it under market and I had message from Alex saying that it would be a shame if something happened to my bike
I’ve learned from the previous Alt Art boom and then correction, not to worry about the small details. How did it rise? Why did it rise? How fast will it correct/dip? I just enjoy my Collectr app going up or don’t worry if it’s down x amount. Different times are approaching so maybe the mindset will have to be adjusted. But overall I’m assuming same shhhhh different day.
Both sides can be manipulated with the right resources. Mind you, however sealed product is way more complicated. Singles are commonly the victims. Vintage singles might theoretically be easier because of the lower supply, but it doesn't have nearly as much demand as the more modern cards, so the attempt and buyouts often fall flat because there is no one wanting to buy them. So, one side doesn't have something the other side has, and vice versa. But both sides can be be manipulated for sure.
So the market is manipulated. Investors buy up the hot sets and remove them from supply. The demand consumes that which is available and then the value starts climbing. Then it's just a matter of time until these investors start reselling at a higher price.
Update* all 30 of my cards came back from PSA from GameStop… less then 30 day turn around… PSA screwed up sending info back to GameStop… so some orders are on hold at the store till PSA gives them the correct info so they can be released… the guy who’s complaining about losing $375k is bs. His math is based on every one of his cards getting a 10… that being said if your still worried about your cards call your local GameStop and ask when a manager is working and that’s the last person that’s gonna steal cards….
Great perspective. I've found myself with similar thoughts on vintage and scarcity = value at times, but I've learnt that doesn't mean anything and you summed it up well. Which is actually great because it allows for modern cards to have potential value with every new set. Great all around.
Pokémon is the staple stone of the millennium generation which is me, the millennium generation is also the biggest in terms of population, most of us are in are 30’s and can afford Pokémon cards now. This train is not slowing down and I see no vision in which it does.
On singles I agree. As far as market manipulation by making things seem scarce to get customer fomo up which drives the price. I believe that type of manipulation exists. Over stock of tyranitar tins with evolving skies just being held for years knowing the demand for them? That's odd to me
Manipulation is people hoarding product and making it seem that there is no stock, but also buy all popular singles. This will give the idea of rarity and so making the product expensive
‘Older, rarer, minter, better’ has to be one of the funniest things I’ve heard in a long time!!! Should defo clip you saying that with the fist pumping… could be an internet meme sensation 😂
That’s it right there that’s the point I’m always trying to make. The art is much much better than vintage!! I am 39 I was there at the beginning of Pokémon
I collect both vintage and modern and I prefer vintage over modern any day of the week. But imho, I think the money is mostly in modern. And even though vintage was printed less than modern, I think that the supply of chase cards is WAY higher for vintage. Just look at the pull rates. You will most likely get the charizard when opening a single base set box, but you will need thousands of packs to pull a specific SIR. It's insane.
You hit the nail on the head with this point in your video if there was true manipulation, the prices would not hold where they’re at. They would go up and then go down the very next day. Come on people this is just basic economics
Wasn't the 151 boom from literally 2 months ago a huge sign of manipulation ? Some big whales and players saw an opportunity to come in. Buy booster boxes at a low cost and see immediate gains. Isn't this exactly what hapoen with surging sparks? There is demand too but I don't think we flipped over night for zero reason .. it was influenced by social media. And the boom happen right before the mobile game not after so idk. Both demand and some manipulation is occurring
I love mid era the most but there is a reason all of my investments are probably gonna stay in the world of modern lol. More people care about modern, it's at a minimum enshrined itself as an era to be nostalgic for people growing up right now (SWSH and SV nearly did as well as RBG), and it is in my opinion unlikely current collectors could forget about an Era with insane stories about value and defying expectations like moonbreon, SS pikachu, etc.

Could the shift in economic demand of vintage be due to age range? Back in 1998 when base set hit it was targeted at kids aged 10+. Fast forward to about 2013 those kids would be 25 and nostalgia would be high. Vintage era was from 99 - 03. Fast forward another 10 years and those kids are 35. Mortgages Kids college tuition, etc Sacrifices have to be made and Dads Pokémon collection needs to go. These things go in cycles. Modern will be the new vintage soon… for a certain demographic of Pokémon fans who resonate with the Pokemon in the Generation they grew up collecting and playing the TCG with. Then like a bolt out of the blue OG Pokemon cards will be interesting to the community again and demand will rise as these things can happen. Probably when the OG fans get their big fat retirement fund. Let’s buy something cool for the grandkids 😆
Ive been collecting since 2012 (vintage slabs and 1 bb or etb of the latest set). Honestly vintage dudes say that stuff but on private discords and places like e4 to themselves and their friends. All videos to the masses complaining about the other side is always modern sealed guys. Just let people do what they want. What someone chooses to collect or invest in literally has 0 effect on your life.
Great content, as always! Could you help me with something unrelated: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How can I transfer them to Binance?
I think I'm doing my own videos ... here is the whole pokemon card market (modern and vintage) ... it's hype ... Pokemon cards are worth nothing ... it's just the people who believe that they are worth something ... nothing else, because I remember a time, that in a german forum there was in 2010 a question about selling a 1st edition charizard (no comment about the condition). Just a thought, I don't know if you know who MNML cards is but you should have him on. He seems like a chill dude and he's definitely putting in the hustle, he does whatnot/vends and youtube.
Guys don’t buy into the FOMO or hype this hobby is a cycle ES is literally what resellers point to always. This hobby isn’t another Wall Street. There is manipulation. There is a ton of supply just have to wait for it to trickle out. If you actually care about the art just buy Japanese or heck even Korean. Basement case background >>>> closet box background, who agrees?
Fact. Sound quality better too.

The boxes definitely help him reduce outside noise for sure! 😂 He is smart
Looks like he is building a pokéthrone too out of the boxes.

I love when you tie economics into these videos genuinely really cool to learn so we appreciate it. These are your best kind of videos.

Same bro same, I wanted that large blast card
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to grab them.
@CamLToe69 I hope you're right.

I bought lugia from silver tempest PSA 10 for 400 I didn't flinch I was done chasing that card. It was worth it
I do, I do like this. Your takes bring me nothing but joy, so just keep doing you and ignore the rest.

Awesome video, brother 👍
You had me at the beginning and all the way through. you are correct you were against all the nay sayers and look what happened. You are right again.
IM MANIPULATING THE 2021 TINS MARKET. THEY ALL HAVE ES BUY BUY BUY

Alex are you manipulating the Japanese market too or what
Stealth bro don’t give him away lol

New mic? Sounds a lot better
There's actually a secret shadow collector with capital the size of blackrock who can manipulate the price of even bulk cards
Any way you can build a throne of sealed cases to sit on? That would look amazing.
I’m here for the meeting?
😆
You hit the nail on the head with this point in your video if there was true manipulation, the prices would not hold where they’re at. They would go up and then go down the very next day.
Come on people this is just basic economics
How can you piss bots off?
Its not easy
Alex with that background seems more powerful
Says the guy who’s hoarding boxes and boxes of modern sets… 🤦♂️
You really need to build that throne of cases. I know I did when my Surging Sparks ETBs came in.
8:01 - I wish more people knew about this or understand this. Why so little can accept the simple truth?
Wasn't the 151 boom from literally 2 months ago a huge sign of manipulation ?
Some big whales and players saw an opportunity to come in. Buy booster boxes at a low cost and see immediate gains. Isn't this exactly what hapoen with surging sparks?
There is demand too but I don't think we flipped over night for zero reason .. it was influenced by social media. And the boom happen right before the mobile game not after so idk. Both demand and some manipulation is occurring

MANIPULATION, BUYOUTS…FAIRY GODPARENTS!!
Where's the magical eighth ball 😂😂
Those walmart tins for blackfriday were hitting. 3 evo skies and 2 swsh era. 15 bucks.
I love vintage and modern. Demand is the biggest factor in my opinion.
So many great points!👌
Thanks for the info 🥃
The code card market is being manipulated, nobody is buying my code cards! 😡
Alex on a rage bait mission to trigger everyone into commenting. I’m starting to think Alex is the king of the straw-man. He takes the worst version of the worst arguments and acts like he’s a conquerer for overcoming them.
So you're telling me moonbreon is basically an established small cap memecoin!? 😅
I think that's pretty much the synopsis and well said.
Wait, is that Alex with Japanese product 😮?
I think tcg card shop and pokemon pocket even further increased the popularity. No coincidence its skyrocketed since that game came out.
It’s not rambling it’s making complete sense..
Got that 🎵 harder better faster stronger song in my head now with “older rarer minter better” 🎶
😂
When Alex say he's about to piss people off, all I hear is that he's about to give out some valuable information for free. Appreciate the free tendies brother.
Nice throne, bruh
This is literally what Gary the Charizard guy does. He has most of the world's supply of PSA 10/ BGS 9.5/10 PRSTINE First edition charizards.
Vintage investors are the boomers who invest in Ford because they think it's a good company
