This is why I've gravitated towards Buddhism, you don't give yourself to a being that may or may not have ever existed you don't worship anyone or go to hell for not believing something, you simply follow the teachings of a man that existed and you learn how to be happy your own way, I love it

Hi I want to believe in God but I also want to be a buddhist. I like the idea but my family is catholic and i'm not an adult. I was wondering if you had any advice.

Dublish X you do not have to change your religion to practice the Buddhist system. It is a guide on how to do something, like a Driver's handbook or any instruction manual. No conversion required unless you feel the need for it.

+Dublish X You don't need to become a Buddhist to follow Buddha's teaching. *Buddhism is not a religion, It's a way of Life* There is nothing wrong with believe in gods but its the blind faith people need to avoid. These are my advices for you.
* Learn Buddha's basic teaching which you can do within couple of days cause It takes up to 6 months to read Buddha's full teachings(Pāli Canon)
* Practise mindfulness which means get rid of the autopilot mood and be aware of the things you do always. Example: imagine we go out for a walk, while walking we think about things we did past, things we are planning to do in future, things we could do in the past and we always loose in thoughts but instead observe the surrounding and try to be in the present.
* Practise compassion. help people who need help, share with the needy people. Example: If you have any extra money, instead of buying a burger for you, buy a meal for a homeless.
* Turn negative thoughts into positive thoughts and be happy for the things you have instead of craving for the things you don't have.
* Cause you said you are not at adult, I recommend you to try a mindfulness meditation at least 20min before you sleep. It will change your life for sure. I always recommend people to try no thoughts meditation where you sit or lay on a comfortable position and stare at the blackness of the eyelids without thinking anything. Thoughts will start to flood in within seconds but you can just let go of your thoughts instead of interacting with those. This will improve your memory and ability to recall your memories when you need them.

The middle way is not the mixture of two extremes, but a way that is neither of those extremes. Buddhism is also not about controlling your mind, it is about seeing your mind as clearly as possible. So when you can see the things that cause you suffering, you let them go. Because you've seen the complete causal chain of suffering, this wisdom alone will dissolve the arising of problems in the first place. It's not easy, but you can achive a kind of happiness none will ever be able to compromise.

There was no word for religion in any of the languages of India or Japan. It gets down to the definition of religion. In the U.S., Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism are referred to as religions and their temples are registered as places of religion. Buddhism can be considered a religion because it has a doctrine, holy scriptures, clergy, organization, a temple members, teaching of ethics and morality some even Sunday schools. Like the Christian universities in Europe and the U.S. there are many Buddhist universities in Japan (about 30 -50 ) and many in Thailand. Lesser numbers in other Buddhist countries. The best description is that of a non theist religion.

Yes and there were more than one Buddha. Gautama Buddha was the last until the next one. But it happens so rarely on earth because someone has to stay out of all the nonsense we blindly follow on earth for hundreds and hundreds of his lifetimes to even a get the chance to have a mindset to unlock the path out of this hell hole we called life. Westerners have gotten this really wrong. I'm a sri lankan (a country with pure buddhism) and we practice right teachings.
1. Dukka = is a knowledge of knowing there is suffering.
2. Samuddaya = is a knowledge of knowing what causes suffering which is craving/attachmemnts/wanting things..this is what causing us to suffer when we want something and we dont get it the way we want or we lose it then it causes suffering.
3.Nirodha - is a knowledge of knowing when you remove what causes suffering then there is peace.(nirvana)
4.Magga - a knowledge of knowing what to do to attain nirvana.. once you understood above 3, you already opened up to the 8 folds paths. You already understood 4th one.
I explained this very short. These teachings are way too deep than you think.

Why don't you look at things like daoism and confucianism. Most people in east asia are confucian-buddhist and don't really believe in gods. In east asia you can mix them , you do not have to confine yourself to one.
Well theistic Buddhism is. Atheistic Buddhism is a philosophy, much like in the same way Judaism is a culture only, when it is practiced by atheists, but, a religion when practiced by theists.

No Doubt religions like Buddhism May appeal to you but what is practical about the notion that we don't exist? How can the notion that everything is an illusion be applied to real life? It's not practical at all and it's impossible to apply it to real life because it's a paradox that can't even be applied to itself because it's logically invalidated.
I I understand that Eastern religions can be interesting or intriguing or appealing.
But isn't it more intriguing to investigate the notion of knowing who is the real deal actual God that created this world and gave you life and the opportunity for eternal life. Why do you exist? Who is God and what is God's intentions? Why did God create the world and you? What is the purpose?

I told my Buddhist son in law that Buddhism appears to me as rather simplistic, somewhat primitive and lacking a rational basis. He answered me that my Christianity appeared to him as rather basic, somewhat primitive and lacking a rational basis. We looked at each other as if we came from different solar systems for 2 minutes. Then we had a beer.

Buddha never tell you to believe in him! That why the temple door open for you to come. Not for monk to tell you that you have to go to the temple. That why you never see people that believe in Buddha walk around and tell you that you have to go to the temple. Unlike Jesus people knock on my door everyday. Even you tell them that you believe in Buddha, they still come. Buddha never force you to believe anything. But tell you the way to study your self even more. Look even deep into your inner spirit (soul). And teach you how to control it, and find good spirit in you. Buddhism teach you to be comm, love your self, happiness, teach you not to be greedy, enjoy what you had, not what you want, and respect each other. Buddha show you the way to live in heaven. Had to read your comment a couple of times but you made some good points. You must save yourself. Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps You are going to have to use rational thinking. Heaven and hell are not some place you go when you die but rather part of the human condition. Soul though is not a Buddhist term but we can excuse that because you were doing your very best to put things into English. I think we must be careful about claiming to do good deeds because behind each of those deeds lies the ego. Also, claiming that we can comply with just 5 precepts is not that easy.

Not exactly. There are hells and heavens in buddhist mythology, but it is up to you to go to such places. If you do good, good things will happen to you. So is for bad action. You can read it up in the internet. Again, it is up to you to decide whether or not you believe it.

Now my favorite Buddhist story from Japan. In the 1800's in Japan evidently there was a famine in certain areas of the country. In one part it hit very hard and the crops of most of the farmers failed. One man though was able to raise potatoes. He then took his potatoes around to feed his neighbors. Some short time later a lady to his house and she said she wanted to thank him for the potatoes. His answer "Don't thank me, thank the potatoes"
That is the spirit of Buddhism.
I'm sorry, but I don't get it. Are you trying to say that it's because of the potatoes that they are no longer hungry? Although that is true, it is also wrong to not thank the giver as if he was not generous, they would go hungry. But, if you mean it symbolically, as in the potato (aka the people who helpped or saved someone), then ya. Thank the potatoes instead of the entity that somehow ordered them to help or save
The older i get the more i understand the point of view of Buddha. I believe that nowadays nobody is really following his path to a meaningful life anymore even if some people will tell you that. We mostly just live to gain thing's that simulate happiness. And i believe that we lose that kind of "real" happiness in our childhood already because we are being taught about rules and norms that are against our true nature.
And to end this i would like to tell you my favorite quote: "Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule."
I like how Buddhism focusses less on the afterlife and more so on the life you have now, and how it guides you to wealth, peace and admiration of what you have.
I was raised Catholic, but in my family, Buddhism represents the most part of my life, by having a fortune frog, Buddha, and guardian lions. Better than having a cross that's for sure.

Buddhism has a ton of magic stories. And it does require faith. How would you know that karma is true other than taking someone’s word for it?
Not really. Most of Buddha's Teachings have nothing to do with faith. That's why, Buddha was basically a Philosopher and a Psychologist. Although Mindfulness is just a part of his Noble Eightfold Path, it has been made an integral part of Modern Psychology. MBCT and MBSR aka Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction are very much rooted in Buddha's Vipassana/Mindfulness. The RIGHT thing to do is to separate the religious parts from the philosophical parts. That's what is known as 'Secular Buddhism', that focuses on only the Naturalistic or Sensible parts of Buddha's teachings. Also, just so you know, most of the Magical Stories in Buddhism are later additions. Theravada and Mahayana are the 2 forms of Buddhism. Theravada is older than Mahayana. It is Mahayana that drifted more and more from the Original Buddha. Anyway, the point is that Buddha's Original Teachings are MOSTLY Sensible and have nothing to do with god or faith or anything ...

I was a very religous Christian, to the point i was annoying and always prayed before, but i became a Buddhist and i found happiness, true actual happiness in the Buddha's teachings, trust me i know people might think Christianity and Islam and all these other big religions might be true in their hearts, but the happiness you might find in them are extremely limited, Buddhism releases your inner nirvana, i'm not asking you to convert, but just try the teachings of Buddha, they will make you whole 😁

Nirvana is a state of consciousness. In Nirvana, there is not happiness or sadness, just peace.

Buddhism does not ask one to believe in anything. The opposite is the case. Buddhism is the middle path where all fixed / absolutist concepts like hell, heaven, god etc are broken down and questioned. Read Kalama Sutta. Buddhism is also anatman - no soul. Opposite of Hinduism which is atman - permanent soul just like Christianity and Islam. So there is no permanent soul to get reincarnated. It's not reincarnation but rebirth, more like a natural process. Theravada Buddhism is influenced by Hinduism and that's where reincarnation , a flawed concept according to Buddha, has crept in. Read Dr. Ambedkar's free PDF on Buddhism. Buddhism also does not pretend to have answers to everything unlike most religions. Buddha was pointedly silent when meaningless questions were asked.
Ambedkars Neobuddhism is unorthodox, you cannot use him, the social reformer, as a representation of mainstream buddhism

the buddhist sense of souls is it is not permanent. You are not the same person at 18 years old when compared to yourself at 40 years old. You are not the same soul in this life compared to the next life. It is the soul task to learn all that can be learn to free it self from suffering.
Dawn Lu Buddhism is anatman. No soul. Opposite of Atman. Nhât-Tâm Cung is right. Because everything is impermanent and changes constantly. The one week old is totally different from the 85 year old. And there is no free will. We are all victims of our thoughts generated from the brain.
I have no personal objection to what you believe because most Buddhists believe in a soul. Specially in Theravada. But the permanent soul clashes with the impermanence of everything which is the bedrock of Buddhism. So I would advise to keep a free mind sans fixed ideas such as - we have a soul / we have no soul.
Important thing for a Buddhist is to lead a life of compassion and do no harmful things to others. Humans may never have answers to all questions. We cannot even stop fighting and killing each other yet.
Buddhism can be summed up in this single verse.

Sachitta pariy odapanam,

That was really interesting and clearly explained. I'm starting to wonder how many people came to similar conclusions without knowing about Buddhism. A lot of this seems like philosophy or life advice and not so much like "religion".

I keep hearing the word " you" in this video. In other words "I" as something of self reflection. If you have your own path(dharma), surely morality and truth therefore come from "you" as in your own truth and morality based upon what you feel. It's a lovely sentiment but I personally can't see it as anything more than that.

What really interests me is how Buddhism differs by country: you've got Indian/Nepalese Buddhism, South East Asian Buddhism (Thailand, Cambodia, Lao, Vietnam), Tibetan Buddhism, Chinese Buddhism, Japanese Buddhism,etc. and they vary so much
I think it’s because of how the react to the teachings, like when a teacher teaches a subject some kids are gonna respond to it a different way
Of course, with 2500+ years of history, religion changes! We’re all taught that Buddhism spreads with traders and colonizers and gets influenced by local beliefs and cultures, that’s why there ended up being different sects of Buddhism. But the core message is the same.

Nearly everyone I know is Christian. I left, gladly, as the ugliness behind that particular set of religions made no sense to me. Their indoctrination and fear-mongering could not hold me. I've been called names, damned and told my children will burn in hell. No... being born into something is not a good enough reason to BE anything. I remained 'religionless' for decades (still am, since even the word 'religion' is negative to me and Buddhism is not considered as such) ... Through much research, I found that Buddhism fit my personality, was in parallel to what I was already doing and helps me keep my life rolling in a good direction, giving me the sangha I longed for. I was called to it, it seemed like something I already knew. Though, I believe Buddhism is superior to other religions in almost every way, still, you don't choose it because of someone else's choice.

Samudaya: Suffering comes from you wanting stuff. Everything is non permanent. Understand that suffering originates from your mind wanting stuff.

not all buddhist believe in reincarnation . i personally dont. i believe once your dead thats it . but i follow buddhas teaching bc it has really been an answer to many of my problems. ita made me stronger mentally and given me much peace
If you not know that in fact reincarnation/rebirth is indeed the nature process, then it's will be a blockage of your path. Hope you will reconsider this possibility, as the number of evidences for rebirth/reincarnations are going up.

But because everyone believe and opinion are different, so I was very careful not to make them uncomfortable. I just let them know when I think it's the time.
@@cariyaputta If you dont believe in reincarnation, just Google search for "Dr Ian Stevenson" and his articles on reincarnation. That will change your mind. Dr Ian Stevenson had done much research on reincarnation particularly on Indians in India. Another point is "never argue with anyone on Buddhist points with others." Everybody has different life experiences which made him believe or not believe on reincarnation. When the time comes, he/she will get confirmation in some way. Thank you for your attention.

Siddhartha meet an ascetic and then he give up on worldly things and started his journey in search of truth.
Actually he joined a group for awhile but then broke away from them. Later they admonished him for giving up the aesthetic life.
The path the Buddha advocated is the letting go of attachment. If you are an ascetic and you are to your asceticism, you will go nowhere. Similarly if you are a hedonist and you are attached to your hedonism you will never be free from the cycle of existence or samsara. When you are free of attachment, you go with the flow created by your past karma. When you are free of attachment, you don't created new karma while you are still being carried along in samsaric flow of your past karma. When you are free of attachment, the obstructions in your mind fall away and transcendental insight/wisdom into the truth of both samsaric and nirvanic reality can arise. It is this transcendental insight/wisdom that will liberate you permanently.

Buddhism is the only religion I'd actually ever join, and quite possibly the only one I've studied that made sense. Not only was Buddha a living person at one point, but his teachings were WAYYYYY ahead of their time and he promoted humanity over idols. They keep illusion as illusion and reality as reality, not mixing it up like most religions.

This is great! Cani suggest a slight change though? Buddhism at he end of the day is not about meditation, it's about discipline and control over yourself and most importantly AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE, and meditation is the main tool used, but not the only one. Its kind of important because meditation alone will not allow you to travel the eightfold path :D
also the last one is not only about taking refuge in your religious community, but refuge in all that has been accomplished and passed down by the ones before us. It's kind of like a mantra to keep yourself humble and open to other's ideas during your travels :D

Vanessa Finnegan actually, the Buddha does mention about a "creator god". BUT here's the thing: this "god" just happened to be the first being to appear in this current world-system. So he thought he created the universe and the subsequent beings that appeared after him. By his primacy, he is still a powerful being but by no means a creator deity. But from my observation, it seems that atheists are reacting more (and rightly so) to the people who claim to speak on behalf of "God" than the actual god himself (who frankly is still delusional about his true nature and probably doesn't even bother much about what's going on in this little planet of ours).

It feels good to see western Buddhists quoting sutras because most of them are ignorant about true teqchings of buddhism- 31 levels of existence( including heavens and hells).
Then you are missing something. Go to a temple and listen, do not speak but just listen.
Some Buddhist monks or ministers would say they are non theist. The existence of any god is irrelevant.

Thank you for that into! I tried explaining this as a child to my mom. We are Christian, but I would argue that Buddahism wasn't a religion, and you could be a Christian/Muslim/Whatever Buddhist. I understood this a kid.
@Richard. Buddhism is too scientific be be classified as a religion. Even as we speak, there is a revolutionary research into certain aspects of Buddhism.
I grew up in a christian family and i remember my father once saying, "you have no self power, Jesus has all power." I remember that being a huge wake up call. I didnt want to be forced into a religion with such toxic views. Ever since ive found Buddhism, I've found my true self.

Buddhism is the only religion that was incorporated in the curriculum of most philosophy courses. Because their teaching was based on reality and has scientific proof, the eightfold path was so rational. Buddhism is about truth and reality.
